Free Basketball Tickets (& meet the Football Team)

Per the Pitt Sports Information Department:

Members of the Pitt football team will participate in the Dollar Energy Fund’s annual “Cool Down for Warmth” in Market Square on Friday from 12 to 1 p.m.

The Panthers will help build awareness for families in our region who are at risk of a utility service termination. The event features a 1,000 square-foot ice house, replicating the temperature that at-risk families and limited-income households are exposed to without utility assistance.

Anticipated player participants include: RB Israel Abanikanda, WR Jordan Addison, LS Cal Adomitis, OL Brian Burgess, LB/WR Solomon DeShields, PK Cameron Guess, LB Jack Hansberry, OL Bryce Hargrove, WR Aydin Henningham, DL Patrick Jones II, OL Jake Kradel, TE Lucas Krull, DB Buddy Mack, OC Jimmy Morrissey, TE Thomas Nealis, OL Dakota Peters, QB Kenny Pickett, LB AJ Roberts, LB Albert Tucker and QB Joey Yellen.

….

Now on to the free basketball tickets

Per our informant Richard Tenzca:

The early read is that the tickets will be for the Georgia Tech Game (but that’s unconfirmed).

  1. Nice to see so many very young Panthers participate in this “Cool Down For Warmth” event.—OT: PSN reporting Pitt to hire Michael Staochiotti Tampa Bay Assistant S & C Coach to head up the Pitt S & C Program. Sounds like Pitt is going “cheap” on this hire but who knows for sure.

      1. Annie, I’m just not too impressed with his resume and I don’t believe Pitt had to pay up to get him. But for all I know he may new the best hire Narduzzi has made at Pitt. Time will tell.

      2. Let’s just say he has never been the head person running his own S&C department, similar to Duzz never being a HC running his own team.

It’s taken Duzz five years to figure out how to be a HC. Many believe he has much more to figure out.

Can we afford five years for this assistant to figure out how to run his S&C program? This 2020 season could be a magical season – this hire was a misstep.

        Plain and simple.

  5. Good to see some new guys pitching in already.

Great to see Fran and Wolfe last night. Appreciate Fran reaching out and walking over to my section.

Wolfe asked me a thought provoking question about knee replacement.

If you are under 50 or just not interested stop reading now.

This is completely off topic and only mildly sports related.

I have given Wolfe’s question a lot of thought. When do you know that you should go through knee replacement? As he said as we get older most of us have some level of knee pain.

In my case it was a difficult decision that took quite a while to make.

First off a qualified surgeon, make sure you have a good one, must agree that you are a candidate and that insurance will cover it. Usually they will make sure you have exhausted all other alternatives, shots etc.

But unless your knee is completely screwed to the point you can’t function, it is still a tough decision.

I looked at risk reward, would I be better off after the surgery than I was before? Since I want to be as active as possible in my Golden years, I decided to do it. I didn’t want to wait to long till recovery would be tougher, and I prepared physically beforehand.

I will advise that the rehab is very tough and you must do it to get the best possible outcome. I would not advise anyone to do it until they are 90% sure they need to. I don’t think you will be 100% sure unless you have no choice. There is a lot of pain and due to abuse and the fact that rehab starts immediately, they give you far less meds than in the past.

The good news is that the brain doesn’t remember pain, perhaps that is why most people I asked who had the surgery said, piece of cake. Liars! As with most surgeries it will take 9 to 12 months to feel totally normal.

It has been 9 weeks and I have little to no difficulty with normal daily functions. The pain is slowly subsiding although rehab still hurts Like they say, no pain, no gain.

    3. So not a Dr but Pitt Mechanical Engineer … who broke and ankle “real good” ( 2 yrs ago, 3 plates 9 screws).

Any moving part made by man has a life cycle associated with it. Look into that term… a quick google says knees last ~ 20 yrs… average male life expectancy 78.7 years So if you are 60+ a replacement is likely a one and done. If you are 45, not so much.

Also if the surgeon suggest this brand new model, I would likely decline. Never buy the first model of something…

The longer you can tolerate your original parts the better your outcome will be. The rationale is two fold .., a lower bar to meet because it hurts REAL bad, and two we learned a bit over the last time period.

I wish my mother had listened to this advice … two knees later I hear a lot of complaints, but that could just be mom 😉

BTW considered bio-med, but as an air-junkie end up in jet engines.

      1. I was 44 when I had mine put in, had to sign a waiver around 25 pages long. I hear the surgeries are not as tough today and also, they do partial knee replacements now. It is bad to have a knee replacement replaced as you run out of bone to work with. So far so good, it’s my other knee.

Two week ago — Sam Clancy
    Last week — DeJuan Blair
    Tonight — Levance Fields!

Levance is on the phone — not in studio. Can tell Coach Capel is a big fan. After they talked about all the assists Levance had, Coach said he needed a PG like Levance…

Jeff Hathorne does a nice job. Told Levance he heard how Levance would get on his teammates after the game if he had set them up and the player had missed the shot – and cost Levance an assist. Levance confessed…

  9. Transfer Horton was on Capel’s show too. Coach went out of his way to say how helpful Horton has been to Pitt in preparing for opponents.

Coach said Horton has been even better than he thought.

Horton said he came here because he always wanted to play for Duke! The Capel Connection.

Coach said he was astonished when he watched film that Horton was a Delaware. Said he has “pop.” Coach clearly indicated he thinks Horton will be immediate help next season. (This is encouraging news — Horton was an excellent 3-point shooter as a Freshman at Delaware…).

Also, Mr. Horton is really well spoken.

As to knee replacements, I had both of mine done (5 months apart) about 8 years ago. Best things ever did (don’t tell my wife I said that!). Pain? What pain? (Yep, GC, don’t remember much about the pain at all.) I made the decision when I couldn’t walk my dog 2 blocks without severe pain. I think

Duzz was taken by surprise that Andrews was leaving. Iowa State got a head S&C coach to go along with their HC hire from a few years ago who was a HC at a MAC school. Both have systems already developed and proven to be successful.

Pitt’s former lifetime assistance coach, now HC Duzz hires an assistant to be Pitt’s S&C head. Neither bring proven, complete systems to Pitt.

And we wonder why Pitt hasn’t competed for top 25 relevance over the past 40 years.

  16. FWIW, this past season Iowa St was 5-4 in B12 and finished 7-6, losing 33-9 to ND in bowl game. They have an OCS, Jack Trice Stadium, which holds 61,500 and sold-out 3 times, and the smallest crowd was 57,442 vs LA-Monroe.

Yes, they made a very good hire with Matt Campbell who took over a 3-9 team (coached by Paul Rhoads), and then after a 3-9 first year, won 8 games in years 2 and 3. So now that the win total decreased by 1, I wonder if the ISU cynics are starting to complain, I would hope not and I don’t believe they have a trophy case of 9 national titles.

But maybe Iowa State’s ceiling is 9 or 10 games at the very most …. kind of like some other team we know

  17. I can’t get all that excited about a new S&C coach either way, unless he is recruiting players.

The guy has been an assistant in the pros, you don’t think he can run a program? There really isn’t that much room for creativity in lifting weights or getting in shape. It is all about hard work, discipline and motivation.

It is also about safety and preventing injury.

How much difference do you think there is between training programs from school to school? From pro team to pro team?

The want to has to come from the individual, just ask Donald or Twyman. Twyman transformed his body last year, while it looked like many of our O-linemen did not. Same S&C coaches, different results.

Every great head coach was first an assistant somewhere.

The big difference is in recognizing talent and getting them to come to your school.

Pitt’s Football talent has been trending upward.

Pitt’s Basketball talent has been trending upward on a steeper plane.

Always need more and better, but you also need them to stay healthy and improve and mature, that is where coaching and S&C make a difference. It is a lot easier when the player starts with talent.

    Liked by 3 people

  18. Speaking of recognizing and coaching talent, Pitt has now won as many ACC games as it has in the last four seasons, yes Stallings only won four with Young, Artis and Co. In Jamie’s last year he won 9, so that is in range.

It does help that this is an off year for the ACC, but still, more than acceptable in Capel’s second year. A very big game at Syracuse tomorrow, but they will all be that way from here on.

Again speaking of talent, Champ has obviously been the biggest difference maker, especially his rebounding, where he is a natural, with great instincts, agility and strong hands. His inside game around the basket is something we have not had for a while and his three point shooting, streaky as it is has been a real plus.
Hamilton and Murphy have also been major upgrades and filled much needed roles. From year to year, Toney has shown the biggest improvement. Overall defense is much improved, especially inside, and offense is much more balanced, with more guys contributing.

The team doesn’t look capable of blowing anyone away, but it does look like they can hang in there with anyone. Winning and losing close games.

  19. Time will tell with the new S&C coach. Pitt should get stronger in the 4th and not fade. I think they also probably need a new nutritionist especially for the O-line

But most of all they need to become mentally tougher. All those penalties and falling asleep come halftime are signs of a team that is mentally soft. I point to how they practice and prepare.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. As for the nutritionist, they can only recommend what the player should be eating. Can’t force a guy to eat properly. A lot of it has to come from the individual and how motivated he is to change his body. In my daughter’s case, certain teams are religious about following her recommendations, others, not so much. It really has to start with the coaches stressing the importance of properly fueling the body pre and post workout.

  27. GC, I was thinking the same thing about comparing Champ’s rebounding with Brown. What does Champ have that Brown doesn’t? Is there more “want-to” with Champ?

As far as the S&C coach, this strikes me as one area where occasional change can be good. The players may have figured Andrews out and perhaps were cutting corners on their work outs. If so, getting someone new in there who can take a fresh look at each player could be good.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Champ is a natural athlete with quick twitch muscles. He doesn’t have to think before he acts. He goes to the ball. Brown has to think before he reacts, it doesn’t come naturally. If the ball doesn’t come to him he won’t get it. That is why he is such a poor rebounder. His blocking skill set is his best asset. He also has a decent mid range shot when given time and space. He doesn’t appear to like contact and gets pushed around. His hands are very weak so he gets stripped often and rarely wins the battle for contested balls. A second big problem for rebounding. He has to think before he goes to the basket unlike a DeJuan Blair who had the quickest move to the basket I have ever seen.

He has gotten marginally better especially defensively. I said before, I would love to see him spend a summer playing one on one with Blair and Troutman to toughen him up and improve his quickness.

He is what he is and we are lucky to have him right now. He makes valuable contributions to our wins and he and Hamilton are a decent combination and better than we have had for a while, especially with the support of Champ and Toney.

  28. On Champ versus Brown, try Googling “fast twitch” muscles. Some info:

“People have two general types of skeletal muscle fibers: slow-twitch (type I) and fast-twitch (type II). Slow-twitch muscles help enable long-endurance feats such as distance running, while fast-twitch muscles fatigue faster but are used in powerful bursts of movements like sprinting.”

Here’s how it works: During aerobic exercises such as running or swimming, slow-twitch fibers are the first to contract. When the slow-twitch fibers become tired, fast-twitch fibers begin to take over.

There are significant benefits to working to the point of temporary fatigue—and therefore making sure fast-twitch fibers have been recruited. For instance, if you’re looking to increase muscle mass, and improve strength, using fast-twitch fibers is the only way to do it. On the other hand, aerobic exercises, those that mainly use slow-twitch fibers, can increase stamina and the oxygen capacity of your muscles, allowing the body to burn energy for longer periods of time.”

And I’m no S&C Coach…😊. Which is why it seems to me the most important things about a S&C Coach are his personality, fire and energy level, and ability to relate to the players…

    Go Pitt.

  40. Pitt in big trouble vs Cuse tomorrow. Cuse playing much improved BBall last 10 games. Pitt will have to play their best and Cuse have an off game for this to be close.

  41. Gee Dan, I hear you’re a pretty good golfer, how do you approach your next round? Upbeat or I’m gonna suck. I gotta turn that frown upside down. 🙂

    1. If my knee is good I’m trying to break 80…if not…I’m trying to scramble. I made the comment for those who may be trying to express their Pitt hope tomorrow with their “ short term investment broker”!

    1. TY Ike….one of my favorite all time songs and bands. Seen em thrice in concert. I do worry about all of you having sexual moments over the new S&C Coach ….but I’ll keep on smiling!

      1. Dan, I’m not as positive as you all think. I’ll wait and see if this new guy makes the PITT team into the next Sampson’s on the field. I’m a steady rolling man, Eric Clapton from 461 Ocean Blvd. I won’t bore you all with another video……………. for tonight. haha.

    1. VoR, Yellen’s clock is ticking either way. He has already used his red-shirt so he has 4 years left period. If he sits out, it’s still a year used, so why not plea for a waiver and at least be eligible?

  42. ^ Mark, As far the West and East clubs, you have access to both sides, so you can move freely between the two. On games when the stadium isn’t packed full (notre dame game) you can pretty much sit where you want. Two years ago I only sat in my assigned seat once (psu) So we will be free to meet up party and sit together a good bit of the time. Bernie’s seats are in sec 211, right next to me.

    1. Ike, I didn’t know that, thanks. I look forward to taking in games with everyone and knowing we will have the ability to all sit together. H2P!

      1. To be clear Mark, it’s not something that is promoted to do but it’s just a known practice. BTW, there are two different prices in the clubs. The two sections on either ends on both sides are just a tiny bit less expensive. A tiny bit.
