    1. They must have been church mice. Didn’t hear any cheering for the Tarholes on TV at all. Except from the espn clown announcers.

  1. The last 2 home games should remind you how schizo this young team is. Against Wake, a weaker opponent, they jump out to a 16 point lead only to be outplayed the rest of the game. Against Louisville, a highly ranked team, they fall behind 16-0 but fight back and lose in OT.

You would think that after beating UNC on its home court just 2 weeks ago, Pitt should be in charge today … hopefully the team doesn’t feel the same way.

    1. and something to look forward to … from a tweet from Chet Mason and retweeted by Dokish:

6’9 John Hugley with a career high 15 assists. “ I wanted to get my teammates involved” he didn’t take 1 shot attempt the entire game. Came into the game Averaging 24 points 15 rebounds 4 assists and he was the facilitator the whole night.

Note that Hugley plays on a team with sophomores and freshman. One of them is named Elmore James … seriously!

  16. Getting past the buffoon announcers, who should try calling the game and updating the stats instead of just running their mouths (but I digress), it appeared on TV that Pitt played pretty well, especially in the first half. They apparently tried to slow things down and milk the lead in the second half which could have proved fatal against another team capable of grabbing the momentum.

  18. The box score tells the tale of how badly they need Capel’s incoming class of Bigs. Out rebounded by 11 total and 10 offensive. This won’t win against teams that can shoot 35-40% from 3 range and 40-45% overall. However, its a nice home win, sweep of the Tar-holes, and good showing on ESPN.

X deserves credit when its due, he won the game for them and picked up a bad day for ‘Penny. Toney played well too, and Murphy continues is “on again – off again” performances.

Hope the football recruits at the game enjoyed the show.

  19. What did I LOVE about that game? We were out rebounded by 9!, McGowens & Champ (both good players) had bad games shooting, and we still won by 14! And if that wasn’t enough, we beat Carolina handily twice in the same year; I know they’re having a down year right now, but they are still loaded with highly rated players and its not easy to beat anybody twice in the same year in the ACC, especially NC with the ref-court-advantage they get.

I really think adding a serviceable big man or two, and another guard next year, will help this team immensely.

And finally, hats off to Toney, our leading rebounder again (7), plus chipped in 9 points at a good efficiency rating. I had about given up on him about 2 weeks into the season, thankfully I was way off the mark on him. Congratulations to Mr. Toney!

  21. Have t commented on the last couple of games as I couldn’t watch them, and I don’t think it’s fair to comment on a game I didn’t watch.
What struck me most was the defense. Really solid for the most part, little lazy in second half, but still impressive. Played enough guys that they didn’t have to go zone. Dumbledorf really looks lost. Cost them a quick five points. Poor decision making. Anyone else notice McGowens ignoring X when he was running the point?
Announcers didn’t really bother me, better today than usual. Takes a lot to get respect in the BoJangles league.
Skippy did just fine, he does well when it’s in the flow. X still learning, gives up dribble and gets trapped too often, but he’s not a point guard. Brown, well, I’m a little speechless, who was that masked man? For him it was a great game.
Finally, up, down, up, down, up down, up…………..

  23. Anon – your correct, out-rebounded by 9 overall, but by 10 on the offensive boards (21 vs 11) is just way too many. However, this is not a tall team and the height they have is not strong enough to dominate. Don’t buy the excuse about NC having missed shots, NC’s shooting % was only 5% worse overall than NC’s but NC’s had 91% more Off Reb than Pitt. Math doesn’t work.

    1. UNC is an elite rebounding team. Roy emphasizes it more than Dixon even did.

Nothing to see here. Pitt is not a great rebounding team but this game is not an indictment on it.

By the way, rebounding totals are a terrible stat. Rebounding percentage is way more important.

UNC is 9th in the country. Pitt is 189th.

Pitt had no shot at out rebounding this team.

Not even worth looking at or getting upset over. It would be like Titans fans being upset that KC has more passing yards this weekend.

  37. On a related note, I noticed that in both the broadcast and written articles following the game, Xavier is being praised for his performance yesterday. Think we could dial back the criticism of Xman a bit? Especially the mocking of talk of X going pro somewhere down the road.

As Pitt fans I think we should be hopeful that X does make it to the NBA. In fact I hope all of our players make it to the next level. I would rank the criteria for attracting elite 5 star recruits to your program as:
    1. Bags of money
    2. Putting players into the pros
    3. Consistently getting to the NCAA Tourney
    4. Relationship with the Head Coach or an Assistant

So for the sake of the University and the basketball program, the more players going pro, whether after one, two, three or four years, the better.

  38. Obviously misheard attendance yesterday. It was 12.376 which seems inflated from what my eyeballs saw, but still good. Looked like many more than 100 vacant seats.

In any case the Pete was loud. I think the amazing thing about the two UNC wins was that the first was won with big games from McGowen and Champagnie, and this one by Johnson and Murphy. with the first two guys having poor offensive games. That is really positive. and so is having strong games from Brown and Toney, but everyone is contributing something. The combo of Brown and Hamilton much better than last year, as are the combined replacements for Wilson-Frame. Even Drumgoole getting a number of serviceable minutes.

    Liked by 2 people

  39. Toney’s all around game appears to be much improved over last year.

Overall three point shooting while still running hot and cold is coming from more guys this year, while mostly from Wilson-Frame last year. More mid-range stuff is working as well. Brown excellent yesterday.

Noticed X playing more like a point guard yesterday with his head up, made a great pass to Brown, when really needed.

Fouls were really a factor, with Champ on the bench much of the game and fouling out, but UNC lost two of their best to fouls as well.

Tough one Wednesday night and at 9 pm which will dampen the crowd. It would be nice if BC returns our football gift of turnovers, which handed them a bowl game.

Suppose the AD came to the HC and said she got the BoD to pony up $500K for the offensive side of the ball (double entendre intended). That includes the the money from the outgoing S&C Director. Do you A) spend it all on a top notch S&C coach who has been program head at a Power 5 program or B) hire an assistant from a quality program and use the savings to also hire a QB coach. I would opt for choice A) for the coming year as line play will be so crucial to how the offense performs. Thoughts.

My cousin is the same way, me and my dad always jab on him about it(he has wanted every Pitt football and basketball coach fired since we were kids in the early 80’s) I just try to be realistic, this is a struggling NC squad, that Roy may very well have lost, but considering where this program was under Stallings, I’ll take every win at this point, and NC is still a brand in college hoops. Basketball can reach the Final Four if Capel continues to build a program(not going to be overnight). Football which I am at every single home game and always catch a road game, has a ceiling of 8 or 9 wins, unless they catch lighting in a bottle. The WPIAL isn’t nearly as talented as it was, plus the Golden Domers and Pedos are gonna get their share of that talent. That’s why Duzz hitting Florida and Georgia is a good idea. But when you consistently have a half empty off campus stadium, you will never compete with the Alabama’s of the world. The one that makes the most sense to me would be buying the headquarters of Pittsburgh Public Education.

Public Education could be headquartered anywhere in the City, they could better use the money and Pitt would have a fine old building right on campus.

  59. OT – former Pitt players in championship games today. Even though Shady McCoy is not the feature back for the Chiefs, he is going to the Super Bowl.

DB K’wan Williams of the 49ers is making his case to go as well – he starts and is in his 5th season in the NFL.

    H2P!

  60. More thoughts on the S&C search:

-1. I believe Andrews left on his own – cause if Duzz asked him to leave don’t you think a replacement was already lined up? IKR

-2. Unless the replacement is employed by Green Bay, San Fran or KC, this search is taking too long and the S&C process is being interrupted on most fronts. Most 18 to 21 year olds are not self motivated to workout. Who is leading these guys right now?

-3. As I said before, no assistant should be hired – we need a head S&C guy. Go pluck one from a very successful lower tier college program, pay much more than they currently make and get the 2020 workout process started.

It is way to quiet – I’m available for free if Pitt wishes to use my services. I’ve revealed 2 of my top 5 already.

    1. I agree Rick, unless the original candidates and PITT couldn’t come to an agreement? The fact that all the assistants left as well tells me that Narduzzi was unhappy.

    2. Erie — if not you, I recommend Richman for the S&C job.

The chance to earn a highly coveted retractable-bev-belt-buckle would be awesome incentive for the players… 😊

      Go Pitt.

  61. K’wan Williams, another PITT D-Back that maybe wasn’t that maligned but I’m sure not much appreciated or thought of during his PITT days and certainly not of thought by many to be NFL caliber. Kind of in the line of an Aaron Berry. Also Lafayette Pitts among many more. Thus making it a PITT fan thing.

    1. Williams fell victim to the coaching changes and would have thrived had Wannstedt been kept on board. The D-line would have stayed strong and Williams would have been joined by Hendricks, Pitts, and two kids who decommitted for the 2011 class and ended up at WVU and Virginia Tech, respectively.

  62. Henry Parrish just committed to Ole Miss. With Lane Kiffin at HC, who knows what incentives were offered.

    1. Henry sure teased us.

Somehow I suspect Henry will be making an appearance in the Transfer Portal sometime down the road — just a hunch…

      Go Pitt

    1. Maybe Wilson-Lamp sat next to Scooter!

      (And is a Wilson-Lamp related to a Wilson-Frame? Just wondering…)

      Go Pitt.
