Per the Pitt Sports Information Department

PITTSBURGH—Pitt sophomore defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman, who distinguished himself this season as one of college football’s top interior pass rushers, has been named to the 2019 Walter Camp All-America Team unveiled this evening.

A second-team honoree, Twyman was the only underclassman defensive lineman on this year’s Walter Camp team. The 51-player squad was selected by the nation’s 130 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.

This is the latest postseason accolade for Twyman, who previously was honored as a first-team All-ACC selection by both the league’s official voting panel and Associated Press. He additionally was named a second team All-American by The Athletic.

A native of Washington, D.C., and graduate of H.D. Woodson High School, Twyman leads the Panthers’ nationally ranked defense with 12 tackles for loss and 10.5 quarterback sacks.

The last time an interior defensive lineman (nose tackle or defensive tackle) led Pitt in sacks was in 2013, when unanimous All-American Aaron Donald had 11. Twyman changed his jersey to number 97 this season in tribute to Donald, who is now a perennial All-Pro for the Los Angeles Rams.

The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Twyman has been a spearhead up front for Pitt, which ranks 11th in the nation in total defense (302.5 yards per game), 11th in rushing defense (106.9 yards per game) and 20th in passing defense (195.6 yards per game).

The Panthers have compiled 49 team sacks—their most since 1987—and rank second nationally with an average of 4.08 sacks per game.

Twyman and the Panthers will close the 2019 campaign on December 26, when they face Eastern Michigan in Detroit’s Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN and kick off at 8 p.m.

  4. Congrats Jaylen. Gee, not bad for a guy who was seen by some as an out of-shape, slow, oughta-be-benched guy who should never have been allowed to wear #97. If the number has that power, I’d say to never retire it and be sure someone wears it every year.

  9. It’s really nice to see Jaylen being recognized for a great season. Congratulations!

    So I’ve taken my time to wrap up this past season in my mind and in writing not wanting to make many upset over my opinions looking back. I realize I have a tendency to do just that, although it’s beyond me and wonder why anyone would care so much at what I think. I certainly am no Maestro. Never the less… here we go.

    PITT finishing the season at 7-5? I don’t get the big surprise there and the wringing of the hands in such anguish. I had PITT winning 8 games, like many others, including the bowl game. Pretty good chance that prediction will happen? But how did PITT get here?

    Considering PITT was breaking in yet another new offensive coordinator, the fourth in five years, can you believe that, it doesn’t seem all that shocking the offense struggle at times. New OC, new offensive line, new running backs and the loss of one Mr Lopes. << Yes PITT did miss Lopes… a lot. Of course attrition is a part of college football so moving forward, the offense struggled from being all new. Except for Kenny Pickett who was busy learning a brand new offense….. again. Is this so surprising?

    Moving over to the defense what to we see? Maybe a little continuity, maybe Narduzzi getting his own players for a few years and maybe his players maturing physically and mentally as well? I get the fact that some schools can jump start their players a little more quicker but there in lyres the difference between 3 and 4-5* players. Speaking of 4* players, lots of complaining about Ford not playing much the past two years. From what I watched, Ford wasn’t as good and didn’t show the same ability he did this past year when he had the opportunity.

    Imagine for a second if all this current roster who are still eligible return. Holy Macaroons will they be good, possibly one of the top 5 defensive units in the country.

    So why all the disappointed PITT fans? I’ve always said that almost as important as wins and losses is the way a team arrives at their final record. Some of my POV buddies were really getting into this season filled with such hope and then another fizzle to end the regular season. It’s always something with the PITT football program. The four PITT turnovers at home against BC to end the season pretty much ruined all the good that had been accomplished throughout an exciting year. I just can’t put all that on the coaches but there is blame on them as well. Although I’m sure they work on ball fundamentals all the time. When when when will PITT put it all together for a full season? Well, according to Coach Narduzzi, in the next few years and I believe him… not to sing his praises or anything. There is a solid foundation in place right now, I’m giving him a free pass for the next year…. at least.

    1. Seven turnovers combined at home versus Miami and BC did Pitt in. That and the receiver who ran away from the punt near the end of the Miami game. With the penalty, Pitt went from having the ball at the 26 opposed to the 41.

      1. The overturned targeting penalty hurt too.
        They not only left the player in the game they took back the 15 yards.
        The next game we played we had the targeting removed and got the 15 yard penalty.
        That being the case Pitt sucked and did not deserve to win.

    2. Disappointment: let’s count a few –

      (1) 28-0 loss to VT
      (2) 4th and goal, down 7 to psuX late in the 4th qtr and the HC calls for a FG
      (3) leading for 57 seconds at home, on Senior Day to BC and losing
      (4) scoring one TD in the final 10 qtrs of the season
      (5) not ready for prime time in the season opening loss to UVA

      “Wait til next year” seems to never bear fruit in the past 40 years of Pitt FB

      I’m tired of waiting and the entertainment value has dropped to record lows with no improvement in sight.

      I’m not a big hoops enthusiast since Rockport Stallings and Barney dismantled the system.

      I guess I’ll have to look for entertainment elsewhere. Golf anyone?

  11. To me Ike, if you gave that information to someone who hadn’t seen any of the games, that might sound like a decent season. But to me, anguishing through each of those games and, after getting to 7 wins, to play so poorly against average at best teams in your final 2 games, I don’t see how one couldn’t be disappointed and dissatisfied. Top 25 was there for the taking but this team/staff couldn’t finish. H2P.

    1. ^^ I really do see where you are coming from Mark, I was trying to circle back to what all our expectations were at the beginning of the season. Of course my ADD kicked in and I checked out with the hit post button. Certainly it was a disappointing end of the season right when Narduzzi had all the PITT fans in the palms of his hands. AGAIN! My bigger point was that not all of the end of the season was completely on the coaches. That’s imo.

      This past season was riddled with lots of mind boggling plays and situations. Following PITT football is no smooth ride to be sure. The fun of it all is in ones minds eye. Just like PITT losing a 5.5 three* running back that de-committed from PITT. I thought 5.5 players sucked? It’s all about perspective and perception. Here’s something many won’t believe, if I thought Narduzzi and Lyke were bad for this PITT football program, I would most certainly be the first on the soap box shouting to get rid of them.

    2. To use the excuse for the poor offense on a complicated play book is nonsense. Pickett had at least 8 months to figure it out. It can’t be that complicated we hardly ran the ball. Nate p never had an issue. Let’s face facts. Its mediocre coaches calling plays for mediocre players.

  12. When you think of all the fumbles and dropped passes this season, I sure hope the staff emphasizes finger strengthening exercises in the off season – that, and “soft touch” on passes, especially the shorter ones.

    It would seem to me that if you have to “Drill” a pass to get it past coverage, that maybe you should look for a different receiver. Either that, or throw the ball away.

Paint me as disappointed with another late season swoon but I still see some positives going into next year and those positives sure as hell aren’t my golf game EE. 🙂

      I’m not entertained by it right now – the shutout at VT and our 10th ranked rushing D getting run over by “Straight Ahead Steve” has me looking for other entertainment options. The D, Bates and Duzz knew that BC would run, yet they could not stop it.

      I’m still a Pitt fan at heart, just not as passionate about the programs at the moment.

      Disappointed yes, entertained, no.

  33. Jeff Hafley, who began his coaching career at Pitt (under Wanny), and recruited the likes of Dion Lewis and K’Waun Williams, is reported to be the next HC at Boston College. He is currently DC at OSU and spent a handful of years in the NFL.

    Pitt is not scheduled to play BC in the next 6 years or so …. unless in a few years, Pitt beats them in the ACC title game

      Pitt could just as easily have been 4-8

      But I do agree that either way, Narduzzi is indicted and should stand trial.

      1. I don’t know tex. The only reason they could’ve also been 4-8 is because they let teams hang around all year that they were better than with poor play. The whole season was a disappointment not just the losses. Pitt was better than at least nine teams on their schedule this year. They just failed to get the job done on the field.

  49. Tx, I have no interest in defending Narduzzi. Again I have been misunderstood, most of my comments are disagreeing with people who comments I believe are misdirected and bias against Narduzzi because they just plain don’t like him. His coaching has been ok, maybe a little better than what we are use to around these parts but not great at all. I personally do not think PITT will do any better and it certainly wouldn’t happen for the next 10 years at least. I most likely will be long gone by then so maybe I am being a little selfish?

  52. recruiting at Pitt continues to get harder. The one northern area that Pitt has done well is New Jersey, but with Schiano at Rutgers and Hafley at BC, it will get that much harder.

    Also, Hafley joined Pitt when Partridge was still on the staff. I’m sure he knows how important recruiting in the southeast is. The good thing is that they haven’t crossed paths since …. Hafley mostly in NFL and at OSU.

  54. ike, you are right. Turnovers and mistakes can blow up the best of game plans. As for losing Rodemaker, ending seasons the way Pitt does just feeds into the narrative that Pitt is not going to the next level, and fuels made up rumors that Narduzzi is getting the axe. Teams with good coaching are supposed to overcome early losses and get better as the season goes on. I can’t see how this argument can be made with Pitt.

  57. Well BigB – I appreciate your thought on those coaches, but what if they were Saban, Myers and Stoops. So we didn’t get the best and we didn’t get the worst. We got average. Welcome to Middle of the roadsburgh! We are average in our best years and below average in most. We are usually not ranked at the end of the year but can argue that we are a top 50 program.

    Personally, I typically don’t gauge Pitt against the other 129 teams. I benchmark them against other P5 teams (64 + ND).

    Congrats to Twyman! He needs to keep upping his game whether it is at Pitt or the NFL. If you aren’t getting better at your craft every day, somebody’s catching you.

    Hafley may have a big check for Partridge waiting.

  59. I was just trying to point out that as much as it also could have been Faust, Willingham and Weiss, it also could have been the three i picked. Who knows what would have happened to their careers. It would be impossible to predict. Heck, Faust may have done great at Pitt and maybe he just struggled with the ND pressure that he wouldn’t have had at Pitt. I know him telling players to pray on the sideline, probably wouldn’t have been accepted at any other place than at ND.

    So to answer Ike, I got no clue! Anything I would guess couldn’t be backed up by any facts. But if given the chance, I would go for my list any day and hit you up for a bigb donation as soon as i announced it!

    1. Seems there are way more “4-star” RBs than there should be. Probably many are rated based on gaudy HS stats, but those stats don’t translate into college where you need either shiftiness or power to go along with good speed.

      BC’s Dillon is a true 4-star RB. Pitt’s latest “4-stars” RBs, not so much…

    2. Dave needed some strong assistants and needed to do less coaching. But the man could recruit and loved Pitt. Your coach needs to love the school. I think Narduzzi loves himself a bit too much since he comes across as an arrogant prick at times.

      And if Dave had the money that Pitt is throwing at the program, he could have hired better assistants and you can damn well be sure he would have forced the AD to study moving back to campus.

        1. I met the man as well. His Pitt passion was contagious. He would not have tolerated playing in front of 40k empty seats and being forced to save kittens from Cathedral trees. But he did under-achieve at Pitt and some of his coaching was inexcusable. He was definitely a mixed bag much like Narduzzi.

            1. and a very good $3.5M coach or a great $5M coach would have then given Pitt 10-11 wins plus nice bowls. But the Pitt administration knows that Pitt fans are fine with 6-8 win seasons plus crappy bowls.

              I’m sure Pitt could find an extra $5M for the program.
              Increase donations by 50% equals extra $5M
              Sell an additional 30% more tickets equals extra $4M
              Eliminate waste and inefficiencies probably is another $1M

              The ACC network alone is another $7 – $10M shot in the arm each year

              Thats nearly $20M of extra revenues.

            2. Pitt lost two winnable games in each of Chryst’s three seasons. That killed us during all the negativity around the program at that time due to the coaching changes. The Akron and Duke losses in 2014 really stand out as both were at home.

  71. The President’s Cup was one of the most entertaining golf events ever.

    JT did fold down the stretch, but he kept the US in the match the day before.

    Tiger Woods added to JT’s President Cup record and also added to his own incredible life’s work.

    Some incredible golf was played by both sides on one of the finest tests of golf ever built.

  72. The International’s top guys all failed in the singles, Matsuyama, Scott, Oosthuizen and Leishman all failed to win their matches. US team figured out how to putt on the foreign grass.

    IMHO, Paul Azinger talks too much and says too little. People complained about the amount of commercials.

    1. I have no issue with professional teams cheating. It’s entertainment and a billion dollar business. Loved how Al Davis had a sign in the Oakland locker room saying, “Cheating is Encouraged.”

      So much pressure is on everyone to win and that it leads to the transgressions. Once the NCAA drops the term “student” from “student athlete” we can go to an 8-team playoff, which will double the playoff television contract from $475 million per season to a cool billion. The players can get paid and these universities can continue to spend, spend, spend since athletics is important as much as the chancellors realize it but won’t admit it.

      So is the $475 million divided amongst the 65 Power Five schools? If Gallagher thinks people care more about Physics than athletics we have major issues.

  80. After reading the pittsburghsportscastle article on Wanny I think we need to give Narduzzi every opportunity to get things right. A coaching change now could lead to 10 more years in the football wilderness. We POVers don’t have enough years left, and like it or not we have cast our lot with Narduzzi.

    4. Pap76… Conner addressed this earlier in the year. Those are recorded pre-season. He said he meant no disrespect to Pitt, Pitt fans or the city of Pittsburgh. He simply wanted to honor his high-school/hometown and all those who helped him during that phase of his life to reach his dream of playing in the NFL. He reiterated his love for Pitt and how special his bond is with the university and it’s fans.

      All of us our proud of our University (and Conner) and always want it to be promoted in good light. I remember a commercial a few years back. I cannot remember who it was for, but it had an Asian gentleman riding a scooter. He was wearing a shirt that i believe was green, but it had Pitt in block letters across his chest. I had to rewind it a couple of times to make sure because of the color. I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. I too would have preferred hearing,” Pitt.” I think James has earned a pass this time.

  83. Watching the Stiller offense last night reminded me of the Panthers. Beat up rbs and wrs, 80% of the passes were 10 yards or less. The mavens will feast on duck unless they want to let a weak offense like the Stillers into the playoffs.

    My Christmas wish for the Panthers is they find an effective power 5 quarterback.

    With zero offense even good defenses break down.
    With no offense the team has zero margin for error.

  85. The Miami and BC games were not the same though. PITT’s offense and KP had a decent game against BC. It was the turnovers, penalties and dropped passes that cost PITT that game.

  97. Grad Transfer TE Lucas Krull signing with Pitt 6′ 6″ 257 lbs from Florida. Didn’t play much at Fla but evidently quite an athlete as he played baseball for a couple of years prior to joining U of F. Let’s hope he can catch Pickett’s passes next season. He’s also graduating from Fla in December so my guess is he’ll be doing Pitt in January.

  100. PSN reported he ran a 4.46 40 yard dash. Florida article said he had a tough time with he’s blocking assignments and was over taken by another 4 star soph that had a great year at U of F last season.

    If continuity is so important why fire any coaches who win more than 5 or 6 games?

    What you want in a program is a steady rise in talent and play on the field. Not one that is statement…if that isn’t what is acceptable to the school’s admin.

    BC is a good example… Look at their last HC’s record over the last four years.Look familiar? 27- 24.

    It never went on a true upward trajectory so they fired him and brought in an up and coming younger guy in Hadley.

    Narduzzi goes 27-24 over the same period (and loses to BC) and still has four years left on his contract and his seat isn’t hot at all.

    But then again, that’s how Pitt rolls…

    2. Compare the two ACC records and division championships. Not to mention that Addazio was at BC for seven years not 5 years. Over-all record of 44-44 and a conference record of 22-34. Statistics aren’t to be played around with to prove ones point when it actually doesn’t. Narduzzi in his 5 years? 35-29 over-all and 24-16 ACC record. There is no comparison. Narduzzi has already won two more conference games in five years than Addazio did in 7 years.

    3. How Pitt rolls is firing coaches who have winning records yet are facing roadblocks.

      Finally it is keeping its coach and seeing where continuity leads.

      Give Narduzzi at least three more years. What is the harm in keeping him? Pitt will just hire another bozo coordinator who cannot coach, so hitting the reset button seems unwise despite Pitt fans loving change.

  104. BTW, I’m not “defending” Narduzzi here. They are facts. Narduzzi gets another year or two and we will see where the chips fall. I also consider the OOC schedule he had to deal in his first 5 years as well as to take into account for the weaker coastal division. So there is that.

    Although we could invoke the Darrin Hall rule and throw out his one below 500 season which brings his record to an over-all record to 30-22 and his ACC record of 21-11. << You see how this works? Fake news, or how about we throw out the games PITT lost to teams that had the initials of UNC? Tickle or torture a statistic and it will most definitely confess.

  105. My brother who is an avid Gator fan says Krull is excellent. Krull didn’t start because the underclassman who started will be a first round draft choice as a junior next year.
