  1. Watching Pitt against Rutgers, it is pretty obvious this is a more talented team than a year ago.

But, more than anything, what makes this team better is that guy named Hamilton. The Dude plays ROUGH.

Pitt has not had a Player like that in quite awhile.

I will follow by radio and hope you kind folks will add color.

  3. Two things… is this game on the ACCN?

)2. I’m hoping PITT is not down by more than 14 at halftime.. For me that would be a somewhat of a victory. After that? Hope it doesn’t get that embarrassing.

Murphy gotta stop driving into the red woods.

  5. Game getting away from Pitt. Like playing Marquette in the old days.

No matter who’s Pitt coach, these hot 3 shooting teams just crush Pitt.

  6. Lville 9 for 17 on 3’s. That’s impossible to defend. Pitt getting schooled.

In a game like this Murphy is worthless! He can’t ballhandle against talent and too short to get a shot off.

  7. L-ville…they still allowed to play bball or football with all the Pitinos & Petrino cheating. This is why
I’m just about thru with college sports as well. (as pro)

  9. Murphy is like the team manager who finally gets to play his Senior year in a lopsided game and hits a couple of lucky 3s.

OK, a bit of an exaggeration.

    But not by much.

    1. well nothing displays the apathy by Pitt fans with 30,000 empty yellow seats. Pitt will have the lowest percentage of capacity of any P-5 school this year. Thats a problem and Pitt refuses to recognize it. When real butts in the seat probably averaged 35k in a 70k stadium, your capacity is 50%. The ACC average is more like 70-75%. Tells me that Pitt has lousy fans or Pitt plays in too big of a stadium. You be the judge. I know which one it isnt.

  14. The officiating stunk but Murphy, Justin and Trey’s shooting were worse. Those three combined for 4-26 from the field. That is not going to get it done. The fight in this team is what you have to love though.

Hopefully Drumgoole is back soon and Karim gets more minutes to add more bodies to the rotation.

    1. Totally agreed. You have to shoot well against a team like that to pull the upset. We did the opposite

  15. Do you know how many times I wanted to say F… you to a ref during a game. Except I had a rule that neither my players or assistants were allowed to speak to refs….only the HC…me. I would have fired an assistant who did it! A technical foul can turn a game, add or subtract momentum. It is not the actual free throws that make a difference, it’s the time off the clock, the psychology of the moment and possession post shots. It can cost you a game.

We were down 5 when the tech was called. We were out scored 18-4 for the rest of the game.

and dan72, I don’t know how many times, but if you tell me how many games you coached and your W-L record, I’d estimate you averaged 1 per win and 11+ per loss – 🙂

for me, Dammit rate was less than 1 per win average and about 27 per loss if you include the while I watched the video afterward 🙂 – some were, “Will, GD, what are you doing there?”

oh, and for me there were 1 or 2 outliers of probably 50+….and counting

  20. All in all a good outing for a less than perfect team against a great team. A little more talent and respect from the refs and we’ll be more competitive in this type of game.

    1. We shouldn’t need respect from the refs to get a game called the right way. That’s garbage. This game was a as badly officiated as the 13-9 game and for the same reasons.

  21. Watched the game last night … gotta be able to shoot the ball through the hoop from outside to win BB games- PITT is a poor shooting teamPERIOD…. the nonchalant pass- turn-over that McGowens made bringing the ball up the court just as the Cards were starting to pull away was a “G- dammit” moment….. good game until the piss poor foul call and the coach getting the “T”…..in a way it reminded me of some of the same crap we have endured on the FB field

  22. There is only one pure 3 point shooter on the PITT team but I read complaints that he shoots to much? Yet Capel in his post game presser said he was gun-shy and didn’t shoot enough. His problem is he’s wide open early in a possession and he’s afraid to shoot too early in the shot clock. Take the shot kid.

    Like

    1. Yeah I thought he turned down good shots last night he has to take. He took 17 shots against buttgers though which is too many for him.

  23. I think Pitt is improving and will be a decent team this year. One thing Capel said and I heartily agree. Pitt needs to stop standing around on offense. Most teams will play us man to man as our shooting sucks.

Big problem with the Flex offense is
you are so busy setting screens for flex cuts, once you’ve set the screen you have to move quickly to another position on the floor. It’s easy to set the screen and just (stand there) watch the other guy shoot.

Hey we got within 5 late in the game. That’s progress. If UNC, VA, or Tech has a bad night, I can see Pitt making it close. If any team goes
9-17 from 3 land, we are doomed no matter who it is.

  24. Dan, would you agree that Louisville used a better inside out game than PITT does therefor giving the outside shooters more of a wide open opportunity?

    Like

    1. I could not watch the game as I have Comcast and wife won’t let me switch. But yes, and Pitt would have a better inside out game if Pitt had three pt shooters that were 6’10” 6 9 6 8 etc.

Hard to get the ball to small 3 pt shooters like Murphy.

  25. This game was very encouraging. Pitt defense was stellar. Their athleticism and grit under the basket was extraordinary against a dominant opponent. The elements that undid them were their focus on Nowaro (?) Opened up 3 pointers constantly. 8 players 8 hits was beyond unexpected. For most of the game the difference was those 8 points.
Pitt’s lack of 3 point shooting and crisp passing enabled L to collapse on X without any consequences. Finally they were exhausted at the end with the emotionally draining bad call on Toney undercutting their spirit.
All in all they will grow from this , should gain confidence and as other freshman are blended in, become more resilient and successful.

    1. Correct – Pitt vs Cincy

The Bearcat’s have a Pitt legacy on their team – Chris Doleman’s brother played basketball at UPJ. The Doleman’s of UPJ have a daughter who is a big, hard hitting volleyball smashing machine.

Many believe she is the best player in the country.

      Go figure!

Pitt did beat Cincy early in the season 3-0.

Fintan Brose didn’t waste any time making a decision about his college future. The Hempfield rising senior announced Friday he will join his brother, Braden, at Delaware.

Brose, a second-team all-conference defensive tackle in 2018, had 23 offers and chose Delaware over Vanderbilt, Air Force, Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Florida International, Fordham, Harvard, Holy Cross, Kent State, Lehigh, Massachusetts, Navy, Ohio, Princeton, Richmond, Robert Morris, Tulane, Villanova, William & Mary, Yale and Youngstown State.

  27. Didn’t get the chance to watch much of the Oklahoma vs Baylor game today but it’s a shame that Baylor lost their senior starting QB in the first half. The true freshman did a good job in his replacement but they came up short in OT. Goes to show you you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. By that I mean it looks like Oklahoma was the better team today, not sure if that’s completely true. To win a game in any sport, luck and the ball has to bounce your way. I don’t buy the old fairy tale that you make your own luck either. Kudos to Baylor for not trying to re-insert their concussed QB back into the lineup second half.

  28. Ike, you do realize Murphy has taken the most shots on the team( actually tied with x) and is 7th out of the 7 who play in fg % ?? It would be worse but he gets a couple at garbage time. I would certainly hope he improves, but against ACC competition, I doubt it. He was 1-9 yesterday before he got that garbage hoop at the end. 2-9, well, if there was another option Skippy wouldn’t see the floor, cause the rest of his game doesn’t translate real well. Let’s hope he gets it together shooting wise quickly.

    Like

  29. I get it JoeK, although Capel said in his post game interview last night that Skippy wasn’t taking the shots he needs to and that he was gun-shy. My interpretation is that he needs to shoot when he’s open which is earlier in the shot clock. Look, I know he’s not the PITT basketball savior by any stretch and you’re right, he’s the best option they have right now. The rest of the PITT players should sign up to the brick layers union hall.

    1. agree …. but in fairness, I see all major programs running up scores to impress the committee …. over the past month, LSU, OSU, Clemsom … you name it. In fact, Saban may have sealed Bams’s fate by playing an already-injured Tua against a weak opponent

      1. @wbb. I understand, but in this specific case, it was irrelevant how he won his game. He was going to be locked into the #2 or 3 seed, so his opponent isn’t going to change. I predict he’s at 3 and OHio State is 2. Oklahoma is locked into 4 and even if he won by 70, Clemson wasn’t jumping to #1. It’s just silly.

  33. Does anyone else just think there’s a curse on Pitt Sports?? It started with me in 1975 when we beat PennState all over the field won the stats and lost 7-6. Hearing the ladies lost tonight was incredibly dis heartening. But what a great year and they get their best player back next year.

True class and beauty combined. H2P

    1. maybe the cynicism by its fanbase has spilled over into the psyche of its teams.

The reality is that all program has its head-scratchers, even the elites …. but to a lesser extent..

Are you aware that OSU had only one loss last year but didn’t make the CFP? How did that team give up 49 points to Purdue, a team that finished 6-7 after Auburn beat them in a bowl game 63-14. How did Duke BB lose to Stephen F Austin at home this year, the same SFA team which lost by double digits to Rutgers?

But when it comes to majority of teams like Pitt, they don’t have the overall talent to overcome adversity when they don’t bring their A or B games. All of these teams have head-scratchers year after year …. the ACC Coastal is the king of such programs … Pitt is right where it belongs

Wisconsin is a very talented team which was much better prepared last night as the 1st half showed, but even they had no answer when the elite talent finally woke up. Over 90% of the teams don’t have the talent to overcome this when playing decent competition

  34. I was a the VB match. From the start the ladies looked like they had lead weights on their feet. I did not see fire in their play. Cincy had nothing to lose. The worst thing was that Cincy’s starting lineup had 1 senior and the rest were freshman and sophomores. Really disappointing, considering we were up by 4 a couple times in that last set. We out-statted them in everything except blocks and aces, I think. Cincy had their best server on the line at the end also. Just bad luck. Maybe the Pete is just not a good place for us… Oh, and we need taller players too. Hope the new class has some bigs. I would hope Pitt is able to draw higher ranked recruits these days. A good season, nonetheless, but a disappointing end to it. They wouldn’t have made it past Stanford next weekend anyway.
