The Day After + Saturday Football Open Thread

So despite an ugly second half, Pitt now sits and 5-2 and we are a Virginia loss away from controlling our own destiny in the ACC Coastal.  I’ll post MMQB as usual on Monday, but I figured I’d give y’unz a new thread to comment on since the game thread tends to get saturated fast.  Focus should be on today’s games of course.  Here are a few notables from the schedule.

Noon

WVU @ Oklahoma (FOX) – Because nothing is better than watching the hoopies lose after watching Pitt win.

Florida @ South Carolina (ESPN) – The Cocks beat Florida last year and Georgia last week.  Chances are they slide back to mediocrity but hey, the first quarter is probably worth a gander.

Georgia Tech @ Miami (ACCN) – Don’t watch for the quality of the game.  Watch so you can lower your expectations for Pitt’s homecoming against the ‘Canes next week.  That defense is scary.

3:30 PM

#12 Oregon @ #25 Washington (ESPN) – Okay yes it’s two PAC-10 teams, but they are both ranked and Oregon has an even better defense than Pitt (according to the pundits).  Interesting eye test to see how good we really are on D.

Temple @ #19 SMU  (ESPN2) – Is SMU for real?  Is Temple for real? (They are 5-1).  If you have ties to the Philly area this one may be worth flipping over to from time to time.

Duke @ Virginia (ACCN) – You know what?  Screw those other two games.  Swallow your pride, put on your devil horns and pull for Duke.  Nothing less than the ACC Coastal championship hangs in the balance.

IMG_3547
This guy gets it.

6 PM

Kentucky @ Georgia (ESPN) – You are only allowed to tune into this game if the Duke game is a blowout in either direction.

7:30 PM

Michigan @ Penn State (ABC) – I feel dirty posting this, but what the hey.  I’m drunk and justice needs to be served in Happy Valley.

Now for a cheer they are here, triumphant!
Here they come with banners flying,
In stalwart step they’re nighing,
With shouts of vict’ry crying,
We hurrah, hurrah, we greet you now, Hail!

Far we their praises sing
For the glory and fame they’ve brought us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Far we their praises tell
For the glory and fame they’ve brought us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Here they come, Hurrah!

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu’ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan
The leaders and best!
Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu’ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the West!

We cheer them again
We cheer and cheer again
For Michigan, we cheer for Michigan
We cheer with might and main
We cheer, cheer, cheer
With might and main we cheer!

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu’ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the West!

Hail to Pitt

  1. If you’re inclined, there are some post-game interviews on the Pittsburgh Sports Now site.

Coach Duzz is on there along with AJ Davis, Ffrenchy, KP, Twyman, and Hamlin.

These guys are pretty impressive — seem to have a good perspective and they credit their teammates.

Seems KP addressed the team before they came back out at halftime because KP thought there was too much smiling going on and it was only halftime. Well, at least he tried.

    Go Pitt.

  2. ESPN College Gameday is at the Dairy School and appropriately there were a few shots of cows (seriously!)

It is customary for the Gameday crew to be given some famous local fare to munch on …. usually barbecue, seafood or a famous sandwich. Today they were given large pretzels. The only foods that I know of that Happy Valley was known for is the Hot Sticky from the New College Diner and Peach Paterno … and I believe neither are still being made (I may be wrong)

  4. Fighting post Pitt hangover. This second half stuff is getting serious and one day is going to cost us dearly. Pickett still doesn’t look healthy. For the life of me, I don’t know why we are in press man bump and run coverage 3rd and 14 from the Cuse 11 (94 yd TD play) and 4th and 25.

  6. From previous thread:

Many people say that the first drive in the second half is the most important to establish control. Pitt just can’t seem to drive the field and score a TD in this situation. Kradel started at RG, and the announcers said that Huoy didn’t make the trip. Is he hurt? By the way, whatever happened to Chase Brown? And I didn’t see Jerry Drake subbing for Ulizio last night. Is he slipping backward a bit?

  14. Just a couple comments about yesterday’s game. The math says that if our “headcase” kicker, Kessman went into the toilet last night, by that I mean, MADE NOTHIN, then Pitt loses this game, 18-20. I have no problem pointing out issues when they are apparent but as of today, Kessman seems to have worked through his problems from earlier in the season & should now be getting credit for being perfect yesterday.

The other comment, ACC officiating has been horrible as of late, to the point of being putrid. Thank goodness that IR is being utilized in order to correct so many awful calls that otherwise would be determining the outcomes of these games.

  15. So I get this email update every week after a game called Team Rankings just like I’m sure many of you do. This week they have updated the projection for PITT’s season and final record… Hell they are now forecasting an 8-4 or 9-3 final record. I’m thinking hooray for PITT when I realize these people do not have a clue as to what in the hell they are talking about. It was just a month or so ago when they were “projecting” a 4-8 season for PITT. Instead of calling their site Team Ranking, they should call it the weatherman rankings because they want to keep switching their forecast. Instead of saying they were wrong they just keep adjusting what they projected weeks ago. Must be nice… ike

Enough already with having our QB do the “slide.” We lose at least 3 yards every time we do this. Seems like the rule is they move the ball back to about where the official figures you first thought about sliding.

This is college ball – you can dive forward when there’s open space there…and the risk of someone hitting you after you’re down is no different.

    I feel better now…

  23. Lumpy Chryst and Babers are both over-rated. Interesting they are now coaching in completely different situations. Lumpy plays NOBODY for a team dedicated to winning football and Dino is almost like Narduzzi as it is hard to recruit at Cuse. (even though Devito was a 5* recruit) Narduzzi just does it better. Getting the best 3* players is an art. .. Time to pay the piper.

  25. If Miami plays like they did against Virginia Pitt will be in a real battle. The Miami defensive speed up front will give our OL all they can handle. We better get Patti some reps in practice this week because Pickett may not be able to last the whole game. However the same might said of the Miami QB as the Pitt line should be able to keep him under pressure all game long. I think the Pitt D will need turnovers to win the game.

Meanwhile, was just watching a wrap-up show where they were mentioning that on its final possession and protecting a 2 point lead, Wisconsin’s All-American RB only touched the ball once in 6 plays. Every game can be tough, especially in the ACC. Was Miami looking past GT to Pitt, I doubt it. They just took GT for granted, a big mistake by any team against any opponent.

We had the break and some students came up to me and talked to me. After we left class there were about 20 students waiting for me. I was like how do you know I am here? It was cool. They are students, but they are also fans and people who appreciate the work I have put in in rehab and football. It was a cool experience.”

Coaching Wisky is a dream job, you don’t have to work hard recruiting whoever is worth anything in the state, your in a town with absolutely nothing else to do, your OOC schedule consists of D1 “directional” schools with no chance, but ultimately they eventually fold.

If Pitt can punch the ‘Canes in the nose right from the start, I think they collapse like a funeral home folding chair. But one thing is for sure, Pitt ain’t coming back from a > 14 point deficit at halftime. Get Patti or George some snaps in practice, Warren’s/Ulizio’s matador blocks are going to make it tough for KP to survive.

  48. Hi All, back from the land of strudel, schnitzel, and beer. Trying to get caught up and figure out what day it is. Looks like I missed some exciting wins, trying to figure out if it was really bad play, really good play, really bad opponents, really good opponents, bad coaching, good coaching, or whatever. Sometimes reading POV gives me whiplash, lol.

Trying to unplug was hard. Sneaking a peek without Mrs.Joeknew seeing was even harder. Just got some scores, etc. and no real commentary till yesterday. I’m glad! BTW, Mrs is still in shock over Amsterdam, I on the other hand laughed my butt off. There are some sick puppies out there, but nothing different than some weekends in Oakland in the day!

I’m convinced there are very few excellent teams out there. Lots of decent ones, and many frauds. Scheduling and perception remain the key. People who laugh at the ACC should tell me who is really good! Transfers are the current great equalizer, much like scholarship limits were in the past. Being on the right side of that can drastically improve a program. One or two players can fill recruiting blunders and round out a team. Big change in the way we think and look at programs. Kids will have to deal with getting passed over by these players, and they will, it’s just the way things are.

People talk about the PSU defense, still don’t think they played anyone with an offense. And other than tOSU they won’t all year. Does that mean they are good or the BiG stinks? Honestly, how much difference do you really see in Pitt and PSU? Not all that much, they are better, but marginally. And I still don’t think we’re all that good. Sorry.

Miami is a psycho team. Who knows which version will show up. Couldn’t agree more, get up early and they will fold. Give them any hope or momentum and we are toast.

  58. I’m thinking of suing Mike Vukovcan for plagiarism on his last article, (just kidding Mike) more than one person has asked me if I wrote that article (they are kidding as well). I don’t want to link the article as Mike may in turn try and sue me for theft of literature? In this world of litigation. << que Wlat

  60. I only watched a little of the klan, er, cult game last night but saw where Mich really struggled defending the speedy Hamler….

We somehow kept him in check pretty well.

    Go Pitt.

  62. Here’s a quote from Jerry DiPaola from the Trib with a thought on the Syracuse game “The most significant reason Pitt survived is tied to the coaches, how they recruit and, of course, the players. When the opponent punches, Pitt is there with a counter-punch”

Sure sounds like a Pat Narduzzi fan to me??

    1. If you watched it, it was a brutal beat down. 25-9 in the first and 25-12 in the last. If you do not bring your A game against Pitt volleyball, they go for the jugular and do not let go. The second set was 25-16 which is marginally respectable. Maybe Fisher could go impart some of this killer instinct to the football team!

  64. from grammarist.com… Go to hell in a handbasket.

To go to hell in a handbasket means to go to one’s doom, to deteriorate quickly, to proceed on a course to disaster. The phrase go to hell in a handbasket is an American phrase which came into general use during the American Civil War, though its popularity has spread into other countries.

undergo a rapid process of deterioration. North American informal; variants of it include go to hell in a handcart and go to hell in a basket .

  65. Just heard on ESPN: This year UVA defeated Pitt who defeated Duke who defeated VT who defeated UNC who defeated GT who defeated Miami who defeated UVA. Since there is no clear cut best team, I suggest that the ACC Coastal division select an all-star team to play Clemson for the Conference Championship 🙂

I think that is a great idea, and bet that Pitt would have 5-6 on that all-star team. I’m thinking
    K Johnson
D Jackson (despite his 4th and 25 brain fart)
    P Ford
    J Twyman
    P Jones
    M FFrench and/or T Mack
Morrisey (maybe but OL overal so mediocre hard to justify)

  68. Read Pickett’s comments after the game. Said a bunch of players were celebrating in the locker room at halftime and he felt he had to say something.

Here is another quote from him:

“We have to learn how to win,” Pickett said. “There’s a difference between learning how to win when it’s a tight game and learning how to win and putting people away and just finishing the game the right way. I think we’re still trying to figure out how to do that.”

Well said, Kenny. Keep at it.

  69. Good choices, Taxing, since we will need a 1st and 2nd team all of should make the team, but who do you (or any other POVer) suggest for Coastal QB and Coastal coach. Tough choices, right?

  71. I’m worried about our lads getting too emotional with the Canes. You know, fighting in pre-game warmup, general jive talking and taunting…etc. PN and his staff will have to hammer home the consequences of such behavior.

  72. Off topic, 4 star guard R.J. Davis announcing his decision tomorrow. I think we were in the thick of it to land his services, but he made an official visit to North Carolina last weekend. No Bueno. I don’t think many recruits would pick Pitt over UNC at this juncture. Unfortunate, because he could really help us.

  73. Well given everything that happened on Saturday in the ACC Pitt’s game against Miami is critical to how Pitt is perceived. We are playing on ESPN at noon. We have a four game winning streak, tied for the longest streak under Narduzzi. If we win the game against Miami, we get ranked. Why? Because they are Miami! It does not matter that they are not a very good team. If we lose to Miami at home, this is another year wasted just like last year after the Wake Forest game. Still pissed about that but at least we got rid of our “offensive” offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach. The season comes down to this one game!

  74. RJ Davis would be huge but Capel and his brother stopped following him and most at 247 (6 out of 8) have him going to UNC. He’s expected to announce UNC tomorrow. At least he’s doing now and putting us out of our misery instead of waiting until the Nov signing deadline.

Roy told him that he wants to have to point guards in the vane of Paige/Joel Berry and not having that last year with Colby White only hurt them a bit. UNC with be a National Championship contender this year and next year. It is hard to say no to that no matter how close you are with Capel and Pitt.
