So first, in order to celebrate the impending kickoff, a bunch of POV’ers met up at a local area golf course yesterday.  After they quickly and easily dispatched an imposter’s best attempt to troll the group, a good time was clearly had by all.

And after the round it was rumored that this refrain could be heard echoing from the 19th hole:

Fight on for dear old Pittsburgh
And for the glory of the game
Show our worthy foe that the Panther’s on the go
Pitt must win today! Rah! Rah! Rah!
Cheer loyal sons of Pittsburgh
Cheer on to victory and fame
For the Blue and Gold shall conquer as of old
So fight, Pitt, fight!

Da da da da da-da Fight, Pitt, fight!
Da da da da da-da Fight, Pitt, fight!
V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

and

Hail to Pitt, Hail to Pitt, every loyal son
Hail to Pitt, Hail to Pitt, till the victory’s won
The Gold and Blue shall wave forever
On high thro’ fair and stormy weather
We’ll sing her praises far and wide until the end of time
Hoop hurray, Hoop hurray for dear old uni..
Give her a grand old ALLEGENEE GENAC GENAC GENAC
We’ll wave and cheer for many a year
And sing her songs out loud and clear
For our University.

Good – Defense not too bad. We can run behind Morrissey Some wide receivers have been open deep.
Bad – Punting Game (sigh). Running outside
Ugly – Kenny Pickett has completed 1 pass and that was to a running back and it was still poorly thrown.

      1. It’s one game. We lost to the Coastal favorite with a lot of starters back and blew chances, as usual. Mack’s drop and #15 whiffing on a sure sack that would have been huge on third down killed us. I think Pitt had the lead when we missed out on the sack.

Mack’s drop just cannot happen. Would it have mattered? I’m sure Whipple would have thrown three more passes and we punt. Does Pappy know what the run game is?

The defense was hitting hard, Ford looked good, but Camp got hurt and Jackson needs to play better for a senior. Twyman was invisible.

  66. KP had time on plays but happy feet and didn’t use it. Not every play but many more him the problem rather than the line. Yes, if you move the wrong way in the pocket, you get sacked. He made some great plays too, but just because he gets sacked some and pressured some isn’t always the line.

Not saying they were great, and who watches them carefully enough to judge other than their coaches DURING THE GAME? Sure they weren’t dominant but IMO far from horrendous.

  67. Pickett was, at one point, 8 for 9 with one incompletion being a drop. The rest of the game
he consistently missed open receivers. Sure, he was rushed a lot but that’s no excuse for the terrible overthrows. Just never puts any air under the ball. Disappointing considering all we heard about his progress. If Mr. Whipple is indeed a quarterback whisperer, perhaps Kenny is a just bit hard of hearing?

I’m disappointed in myself for allowing the false glow of optimism to creep in. Sure it’s one game, but that’s the point, it’s ALWAYS one game, or one pass, or one turnover, or one whatever. It’s obviously too much to ask to have a competent QB. Or an o line that can block.
Why this game surprised me is puzzling. I mean I did say they have 4 new starters on the o line, all new running back, and a qb that was inconsistent at best. Seriously, what was I expecting?
Now, I was ready to jump off the ledge last year after the start we had. But guys, it is groundhogs day. Does anyone think it will end as well? Pickett is now an upperclassman and he’s making the same dumb plays over and over. And he’s also getting killed. The o line is a sieve. If that’s the best game plan Whipple can come up with after having months to prepare I’m more than a little concerned.
I will take some solace in the fact we lost to a better team. They just were better. But the lack of halftime adjustments again? Yup, groundhogs day. Why do I keep going to the show when I know how it will end? ITs JUST ONE GAME. Wash, rinse, and repeat!

  74. Just got home…
First off thanks to Fran, Big Al and all the rest who put together an outstanding tailgate experience. Getting to meet the POV guys is really worth it, but it is really painful to be on this diet.

Unfortunately, I didn’t find the game to be much of a surprise, Pitt was outclassed by a better team.

The QB’s were the major difference, although their receivers made more great catches than ours and didn’t drop any/many. Unfortunately KP didn’t appear to improve much from last year.

What I really don’t understand is that I thought we were going to have a balanced offense. Whipple pretty much put the whole game plan in KP’s hands and he obviously was not up to the task. He never gave the running backs a chance. The one good drive was due as much to Sibley and was the only balanced attack that I noticed..

It was great to see Pitt come from behind and take the lead at the half. It was most surprising after the way they played in the first quarter. The drop by Mack and subsequent poor throw by KP was the turning point. Game over.

Their special teams were better than ours, another deciding factor.

PoD says DiNucci could have won the game for us, although I doubt it, he couldn’t have been worse than KP was today. KP missed a lot of open receivers and not by a little bit, but the overall game plan was dumbfounding. Di Nucci was pretty accurate on his mid range throws today.

I thought the O-line did pretty well in their first game, actually better than I expected.

I also thought the defense played very well, they are faster and they tackled well. The loss of Weaver hurt, but they still did pretty well against a very good QB with some fine receivers.

Whipple better go back to the drawing board, there were some finely designed plays, but your QB can’t execute a high enough percentage of them. It seemed like they were going for the home run way too often.
We need to establish the running game or finding five wins will be difficult.

By the way it was a nice crowd and the effort is being made to improve the college atmosphere.Hate to say it but half this crowd will be absent next week. Still think they should tarp most of the upper decks.

A final observation is that the refs were much more efficient in their reviews.

Absolutely. Pathetic. And I am fairly good to find a source. So.thus was the most botched opening day EVER.

You will not win when you have a blocked punt, throw two interceptions, drop two easily catch-able balls, miss a field goal and too many to count open receivers. Plus no running game.

Yeah, a few things to work on this week.

    Like

    1. 4 easily catchable balls. Tipton, Mack, #86, and one other one (a running back?) I guess the receivers were expecting overthrows as there was no air under the ball all night.

And our dbs still don’t look back for the ball. The floater where Bryce got crushed and he just threw it up, the guy in double coverage got it. Should have been an easy pick.

  78. I didnt see the game but kept updated via phone while on business. Just got done reading the comments. All 300 plus of them. Not surprised by how this game turned out. I am surprised that Kenny continues to struggle with the basics. If he doesnt quickly grasp the system, this team might not go bowling. However, Pitt still has a good shot to win 7 season games and upset a team or two. Dont go jumping off any bridges. But there wont be a Coastal title this year.

    Like

  79. Tx, if the blog made it seem that Kenny doesn’t grasp the system, we need to work on our accuracy as I think that isn’t it. Kenny doesn’t grasp anything consistently enough to perform in the system. Inaccuracy, lack of touch, receivers that are unable to compensate for imperfect throws, an o-line that is leaky enough to justify his happy feet, etc. System grasping isn’t what looks to be the problem.

And with all that, the mistakes by the punter(maybe blocker too), a few receivers dropping easily catchable balls, and the long fg miss all were critical and against a fair?, not even very good UVA, we won’t overcome all that with our seemingly at least capable defense. Kenny is not good, but he is just one eleventh of the problem. He needed a Wake Forest opponent to start the season, and I am not sure UVA is anything much better, but they do have a QB and a kicker. We don’t.

If KP doesn’t get it together fast next week, this needs to be blown up. I was really looking forward to the PSU game when the tickets arrived today. That excitement ended with a thud after the first 2 series, revived for the nearly perfect 2nd quarter then was choked, squeezed and steamrolled out of me during the entire 2nd half.

TURNOVERS mostly on KP and with a Whipple offense, that looks great when it doesn’t suck, I am made to think change must happen there first. If we lose next week, and we all know this team is very capable of that, heads need to roll and it starts at QB and ends eventually with HCPN. Victory Heights funding isn’t happening amidst this mess. Program trajectory is not up, not even level with a loss next week.

  80. Pickett w a 40.2 QBR
Where was Valique “the freak” Carter? One touch for about 3 yards?
Leading receiver was your running back due to one play?
If I were coaching, I would use next week to try new talent. Give Pickett the first quarter and good or bad, yank him after the first to give back ups a chance to prove themselves.
