  1. Thanks for the update Maestro. Looking fwd to hearing how today went….did the 12.5 shoe bring about the desired results?

  2. Interesting that Will Gragg put on 20 pounds.

I’m trying to stay realistic, but I think this offense may surprise the crap out of some people. Course, unfortunately, it may take a couple games for things to start to click…

We need KP to make plays early and often. I think he’s capable of it…👍

    Go Pitt.

Eric (MissingWlat) is signed on as is Gordon Conn.
Waiting to hear from Major Majors tomorrow.

So far I have between 12-15 solid commitments. Let me know by Tuesday 8/20 if you are interested in joining us a Willowbrook. Email me directly at

    1. I am trying to get Dave Havern to the tailgate. If he is in town he is coming with me. I will get him to one for sure.

      1. kman — it would be awesome to have Dave Havern at a POV tailgate.

The wife and I were students and at the big comeback win over the Eers…. What a memory Dave and the rest of the Panthers gave us that day…

        Go Pitt.

  4. Mike – thanks for your constant update with interesting …. sh……stuff. it is really fun to read what you bring to print!

BTW, we haven’t heard from Marietta Mike in quite some time. You are Mike, and from Atlanta…..ergo, are you the former Marietta Mike? Inquiring minds want to know!

    1. Not Marietta Mike! I used to post as “Atlanta Panther” and there was some confusion around that. I didn’t realize there was another Atlanta Panther on the board! Of all the people to take this thing over…it’s the guy with no etiquette (haha)

    2. MariettaMike is alive and well, just busy traveling. I did order tickets for the Pitt vs. GT game on November 2 and looking forward to bonding with all Pitt fans. No prediction on the outcome at this time.

  5. Off topic but still Pitt sports- the women’s volleyball team is pre-season ranked #12 by the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Assoc). They finished #14 last year. Go out and buy a flex season ticket package for them- it’s only $45 and you can use the tickets any way you want- 3 tickets for 5 games, 1 ticket for 15 games, etc. I got my tickets in the mail this week.

  6. PSN reports that Spectrum, big cable provider here in NE Ohio where I live, and In NC and VA, will carry the ACC Network. Great news, at least for me. Spectrum replaced/bought up Time Warner Cable, which was our provider for decades. It also turns out that Disney owns Spectrum and ABC and ESPN and a whole lot more. Best wishes to all of you POVers still waiting on a local provider.

  7. Hail to our Panther VB team !!! FWIW I am rehabbing a HS senior who is intent on going to PITT to play for our NATIONALLY RANKED team..(darn, that felt good to type). She is 6’3. I contacted EJB and he gave me some contacts for her to start the journey towards PITT…EJ Borghetti, great man and what a blessing …

    1. Bernie, many major programs have filled their recruits by the player’s sophomore or junior year. Not having an offer this late… if she hasn’t heard from one of the coaches by now it doesn’t look good. Perhaps they would let her walk-on and try out. Heck, even my Div III kids were recruited before their senior year. Fingers crossed that she gets that offer.

  8. Seems like the cone of silence has been placed over the O-line battles. Haven’t heard much about how that is going. Is KP getting the protection he needs? It should be fairly obvious if are O-Linemen are holding their own or just holding vs our solid D-line.

Also funny that they interview Vincent Davis, so again who are really going to get the carries come game time?

We also hear about a lot of wide receivers, but who are the go to guys. Sounds like Mack and FFrench. Big play makers are really needed, early and often. We hear about speed and routs etc. but who are consistently making difficult catches?

The season is almost here and it is really quiet, too quiet.

  9. It sounds like Sibley and Salahudin were held out of the scrimmage on Saturday. Are these guys banged up?

If they are, then we are suddenly thin at RB…

  10. The OL/receivers should be tested in practice this year..this is a good thing…and hopefully te entire team is playing at a higher level…no mention of the LBing crew….

    1. I was just thinking the same about the LBs and how little has been said about them…

On a positive note, every time a reporter asks one of the offensive players about Coach Whipple, the player’s face lights up…

  11. Salahudin is still nursing his knee injury from late last season but says he could have played in this past scrimmage. I don’t know if Sibley was held out as well which would be ok with me. I want the players ready but I don’t want anyone to get hurt even more

    Like

    1. Sibley was indeed held out according to Pittsburgh Sports Now (in the Davis article). Is he the unnamed player with the knee scope? Hope not, but if so, I hope that Salahudin gets ready.

  12. A passing thought:

As everyone knows, Whipple coached Big Ben (no not Big Bernie) as his QB coach years ago. It seems strange to me that we haven’t heard or read anything about them being reunited in any way at the south-side facility.

  13. Gragg (on Kenny Pickett vs last year): “Kenny is really taking command of the huddle, telling guys what to do.”

Yeah, Mark Malone was great at that, too.

    Like

    1. Mark Malone may have been fine if he didn’t have to hand the ball off to the likes of Walter Abercrombie and Greg Hawthorne. Plus an aging O-line.

      1. You know what I mean. Him “taking command of the huddle” is not the kind of progress I want to hear about.

    1. BTW, LB Leslie Smith looks like an interesting case. His biggest offers after Pitt were Colorado State, USF, and Temple. In other words, he didn’t have big offers. He was also offered by Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth and a bunch of other schools.

His size may have been a factor. He is currently listed as 5-11 and 195.

Here’s something interesting. He played HS in Miami at the 6A level and in his senior season he had 76 tackles — but 30 of them were for losses!

The next Zeke Gadson?? We can hope…👍

      Go Pitt.

  14. BTW, I am fan in Atlanta…

It’s tough being in the heart of SEC country. Ugh.

Anyway, between reading The Athletic’s ACC round table rankings this week and hearing thoughts on the ACC channel on XM, expectations are pretty low for this year. I have no idea what to expect, as with all recent years (or longer).

      1. Hey Michaelangelo, little food for thought. How much love to you think Georgia Tech and their fans living in Pittsburgh gets? 😉 Isn’t that why Reed created the POV? I honestly think that the majority of active posting POVer’s no longer live in WPA?? Would love to get some sort of breakdown where all the POVer’s are now residing from. Keep up the great work Mike….

  15. From what Narduzzi said today, sounds like Pickett is making at least some of the progression you want to see in a second year starter. Sounds like he’s got his confidence back and is feeling comfortable with what Whipple is coaching him. Narduzzi said he’s throwing on time! Huge if that statement is more truth than coachspeak

        1. It’s a blues song about an African American neighborhood in Dallas, which was called… Deep Ellum. Several big African American blues/gospel singers were from there. It’s been covered many times by many singers and bands, spelled as Deep Ellum, Deep Elm, and Deep Elem (the Grateful Dead version).

          1. Blues/gospel singers from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. A lot of famous bands like Cream, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Grateful Dead etc. covered American (mostly southern, black and white) blues songs from the previous generation early in their careers and southern blues music from the previous generation had a big influence on their sound

  17. Hi Guys,
Although I’ve read the blog daily, I haven’t really posted in a very long time. No, this had nothing to do with some of the nonsense over who is positive or negative, just that I didn’t feel I had anything of interest to contribute!
Now that the football season approaches I’ll make a few comments, but I’m still not sure they interest anyone but myself.

    1) I am anxiously awaiting my season tickets. Can’t wait for the games. My wife is also on pins and needles for the ticket arrival but for a different reason. She wants to see if they have the Panera buy one get one on the back! Guess everyone has their own reason to get Pitt tickets lol.

    2) I noticed a lot of realist/ cool aide accusations over the months. Boring and amusing at the same time.

    3) Capel situation should come into focus this season and in next seasons recruiting. I’m pulling hard for the guy, hard not to like him. Pay for play is only reason I can see for lack of getting a big. However, that little voice whispers that when he was a head coach his only real success came when he had Blake Griffin. Not sure he will get that type of stud here.

    4) Real shame about RW, felt that he was not only best defensive guy, but best player period.

    5) As far as optimistic or pessimistic I probably lean of the latter, however, I like to describe it like when a someone forces a 30 footer or throws into triple coverage and you’re going Noooooooo. Then it goes in or is caught and you’re Yesssssss! Hey, if they are playing poorly at that particular time there’s nothing wrong with that, but if they play well in stretches cheer. Doesn’t mean they didn’t stink earlier, or were great later.

    6) Oh, another thing I noticed was getting on people for hiding behind screen names. That’s just the nature. No problem here. 99.9% either use screen names or nicknames. No biggie.

    7) Speaking of Biggie, Hi Bernie!

    8) There are more questions than answers this year. I mean, all new backers, all new backs, and I mean as starters. The O line, tight end, Paris. Then again, isn’t this typical Pitt football?

    9) Actually, the reason I’m back on is I had a dream the other night(no, not that dream). We lost to PSU 9-7 as we missed a 53 yarder at the buzzer. I can only wish, I think we get smeared. And you have NO idea how much it hurts to say that.

    10) Speaking of Pitt pride and enjoying a moment, if anyone was as the victory over the Nitters….well, they played that silly song, but that first LETS GO PITT shook the stadium. Bless their hearts it was one of the finest moments in the last 30 years to hear that type of fan support. Just wish it could be every week!

    11) I look for 5-7. My usual prediction. Beware the Bobcats.

    12) If 5-7 serious thought given to ………… yup, again. 6-6 and bowl win saves PN. We should expect more.

    13) Mrs. JoeKnew and I will make every attempt to make the UVa tailgate.

    14) See, re reading this I really didn’t have much to say anyhow.

    1. joeknew— I, for one, am interested in your thoughts on Pitt…

You wrote concerning not posting — “…just that I didn’t feel I had anything of interest to contribute!”

Yikes! With that criterion there wouldn’t be much posting on here! 😊

      Go Pitt.

    2. Enjoyed the post!

      1) haha!
      3) the folks at VCU have a different view. Capel elevated that program and took them to the NCAA and won the CAA. Made an NIT appearance as well. Was a bit of a desert before he got there.
      5) I get it and well-articulated.
      13) excellent

  18. Nice post JoeKnew. Can’t disagree with the football stuff that you wrote (don’t know much about BB). Best screen name on the POV, IMO. And, yes, Joe knew as did a host of other psu assistant football coaches and probably Sandusky’s wife… Criminal!

I’m thinking that Pitt have to throw long on first down along with roll-outs/play action in order to keep Kenny upright… Except when its 3rd and long and they know we are going to throw…

  20. As for me, JoeKnew, I always looked forward to your knowledgeable posts, which included basketball, of which I am a real fan. Please keep them coming. I have repeatedly commented and worried that Capel may not be able to lure a top big to Pitt. But I think he did manage to salvage this year’s recruiting class and his next class should prove to be decisive as to his real recruiting ability.
