The readers of this blog have done a tremendous job commenting on fall camp since I posted last week.  I thought I’d feature some of their posts.

First this post from “Dallas Mike”.  My comments are in italics

On the eve of fall camp, here are 15 predictions that I am counting on…

1) Optimism abound;  Already true
2) Narduzzi mentioning the Coastal Championship several dozen times, but silence on the UNC Tar Heels;  Well he was asked about it in a question and played it off.  But start your counters ladies and gentlemen.

3) Narduzzi needling Jerry DiPaola and media puff pieces loaded in the hard drive as no beat writer really has any access or information unless it is strategically leaked;  Completely true.  Duzz needled Jerry at least three times in just his first interview.
4) The obligatory references to silly motivational team slogans…”Lock the Gates,” “Turn Out the Lights,” “Flip the Switch,” “Take It,” “The Pursuit,” “Win a Bowl Game” maybe I added one in there;  Not yet but a near certainty
5) A robotic mantra of, “taking things 1 game at a time, especially in preparation for the conference opener with UVA”;  Ding Ding we have a winner.
6) Insert name here _________ of junior or senior that….”is going to have a breakout year”;  Said he was “excited about our offensive line”  Also said “Patrick Jones has broken just about every weight room record we have”
7) People on this blog overreacting and expecting a “breakout season next year,” when Narduzzi purposefully mentions a young backup by name to push a veteran with no threat of losing his job;  Will probably happen around day 3 of pads.
8) Reports that, “Kenny Pickett and the offense are ready to take a step forward this season under Coach Whipple”;  These reports have already started and won’t end anytime soon.  And by God I hope they are true.
9) When Kenny Pickett has a bad day, reports that “Nick Patti was hitting his targets out there” or Jeff George (not the #96 version) was “throwing with some great touch on the deep ball.”  Dave Wannstedt’s best line ever:  “The backup quarterback is always the most popular guy in town”
10) Narduzzi shocking everyone with the annual attempt to motivate an under the radar player through the media. For example, “Mychale Salahuddin may be the most talented RB I’ve coached in 30 years,” which will ultimately lead to absurd expectations and a feeling of unfulfilled promise when he graduates;  Also day 3 of pads.
11) Reports that Borberly and Bates are “optimistic in their 2nd year as players have had a year of experience learning their systems.”  Box checked.
12) Heaping praise on the strength and conditioning program;  Box also checked.
13) References to camaraderie, brotherhood, and chemistry among this year’s group AND “embracing the role of the underdog”;  Box checked yet again.
14) Gushing over new uniforms and logos; and  And as good fans we all should be gushing…
15) Narduzzi’s defense, “finally has the personnel in place to make some noise in the ACC.”   You heard it here first.

“Formerly WWB” summed up the key takeaways from Narduzzi’s presser nicely

1) V-Lique moved to wideout. (not a shock to me)  Hope he’s been spending a lot of time with the JUGS machine
2) Balance on offense desired (not a shock)  The last time we had a 50/50 run-pass ratio Walt Harris was OC.  (Sarcasm here… I actually don’t know when the last time was)
3) OL more athletic this year Pure propaganda (until confirmed by an independent third party)
4) AJ Davis and Sibley from spring camp, and Salahuddin is now healthy but will be brought in slowly Great news about Salahuddin…if it’s true
5) 6 LBs vying for starters – wide open  Sure they are
6) Jake Scarton (holder and back-up kicker) moved on ”’ kicker Alex Kessman will pick the holder from a handful of candidates  Well I can probably tell you who it won’t be
7) TE Will Gragg is about 250 lb, up from 220 when he came here.  “O'”fries will do that to you…
8) players do scan the internet to see what’s being written about them … Chris Peak referenced  I am incensed by this blatant Pitt POV snub.

“TX Panther” Posted a link to media day interviews

That’s all for now.  Will try to get some more stuff based on player and asst coach interviews posted tomorrow.

  1. Some background on how we got here with respect to the Oline:

    2014 — (Coach Chryst)
    Bookser, Grimm, Hayes
(O’Neill, Herndon and Dintino were switched from other positions…)

    2015 — (Coach Duzz)
    Pilato and Paulina

2016 — Morgan, Williams, Ford, Hargrove.

2017 — Drake, Warren, Houy, Van Lynn, Drexel

All were 3-star recruits except for 2-star Drexel. You can see that the 2015 class was too small and washed out (Paulina was a 5.7 guy…) leaving a big gap in the roster.

I think OL is very difficult to recruit. Many players may look big-time in HS because they are just so much bigger than their opponent.

There are 14 Olinemen listed about (recruited as OL) and so far, only 2 of them (Bookser and Hargrove) have played a lot.

Course Morrisey snuck in somewhere as a walk-on…

    Go Pitt.

    Like

    1. Another problem is Ford and Hargrove play the same position, so that class is basically one starter and a backup. Chryst really whiffed in 2014 and had no one for Narduzzi to hold onto in 2015.

  2. Interesting comments from Coach Beatty regarding who he sees as a breakout performer this year: Aaron Matthews—and he expounded on that a good bit. I, for one, agree and look forward to Matthews being a significant part of the offense. Could be Pitt’s version of Hines Ward (how’s that for being optimistic?)

    1. its a football factory
they should just set up a minor league system for the NFL and pay the players
its a sham that they even pretend to take real classes and mingle with the student body

  3. V’Lique back to Receiver. Guess the Slot in Whipple’s Offense just makes too much sense not to give him a shot to compete there.

But still expect see to eventually see him being tabbed to take handoffs out of the backfield.

Players disappoint and injuries do happen.

    1. I can see V’Lique being used much in the way Henderson was used in ’16 where he was either handed the ball or used as a decoy. He won’t get as many carries but he may get more pass opportunities on swing routes

  4. So Steph Curry visited with his old college teammate and current Pitt coach Jason Richards while highly regarded point-guard recruit R.J. Davis was visiting Pitt.

Nice photo opp and Pitt memory…

    Nice job by somebody…

    Go Pitt.

    1. do you think Narduzzi could have pulled something like this off?
do you think he even would have thought of it?

Capel is going to land a top 10 class in no time
And he’ll do without the money bags which is more impressive

Pitt will be in an Elite 8 before Narduzzi gets back to another ACC championship game

        1. its points out the stark differences in recruiting approaches
you have one coach that understands he must do better in recruiting and is innovative in his approach
you have another coach that just doesnt get it and it will prevent the team from reaching its potential
but there are some that believe the MSU approach will work at Pitt in the ACC
it was a cheap shot by design

if I was Narduzzi I would be a little shamed right now
I’d be making a call to Larry Fitz
but I dont think Narduzzi feels shame and thinks he’s doing just fine

one coach hustles while the other sits back
although i will admit, narduzzi has more energy than chryst. but neither are known recruiters and neither get joy out of it

capel seems to really enjoy it
my suggestion to narduzzi is to find more recruiters…those young and hungry assistants that excel on the recruiting trail. ask your boss Heather for the money if you are short. thats the only way Pitt will consistently succeed.

Pitt is already behind Miami, NC and Ga Tech in recruiting this year yet some on here are touting it as Narduzzi’s best class yet.

          its all relative
and thats why I pointed out Capel and compared against Narduzzi

        2. Agreed gc. Aaron Donald = S Curry.

I know I know AD is a former PITT player but keep in mind. He has a choice where he works out but his rapport with Narduzzi is great so he works out and helps with the team. Another head coach could have mucked up that relationship.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. another coach would not have mucked it up

Capel is recruiting a top 10 PG so he gets the best PG in the league to show
Narduzzi should do his best to get certain guys to also show during visits

Like Fitz or Boyd for elite receivers
AD of course for any linemen
            Reevis for DB’s
            Take your pick for RB’s
Plenty of OL to pick from as well albeit older guys

            But you get my point
dont just sit back but hustle

open your damn practices to recruits as well

            1. Tx, again and with all due respect. You list countless reasons why PITT and Narduzzi are fighting to get recruits with one hand tied behind their back and then ask why he can’t get the big recruits. That logic does not compute with me.

Narduzzi is the only coach with the rope and he will hang himself
one of the first things Capel did was to take down the rope
Pitt supplies every coach with rope

              1. thats not what i said but go on and think Narduzzi hustles
he’s as lazy as they come
look at how Capel does it
there is little excuse as to why Pitt cant recruit more elites
the biggest constraint is the coaching at this point
everything else is a lame excuse (yellow seats? then tarp them but Narduzzi refuses; start winning and fans will show)
I mean what legitimate excuses are left?

Pitt is getting out-recruited by a guy older than Pappy
                NC doesnt have the tradition
                NC doesnt have the facilities
NC’s budget is less than Pitt’s
NC doesnt have recent success (unless you count Pitt)
Yet NC lands the 4 stars (and before u bring up recruiting territory…there are far more 4 and 5 stars in PA and neighboring states than there are in NC or SC)

My point lost on some people is that Capel understands recruiting and will be highly successful as a result
Narduzzi fails to understand recruiting and he will fail
and yes I consider a 7-7 season and a participation trophy as a failure

      Like

  7. Don’t know how good Carter’s hands are. It could be a quick stop at receiver before heading back to DB. It’s pretty clear that a minimum of three OL recruits should be brought in for each class. The coaches all like to say that offensive linemen are trained to be interchangeable, but OTs and OGs have slightly different skill sets, and an OT without the arms and foot skills could get a QB killed. Pitt will probably need to dip into the transfer pool each year to bring in at least one seasoned OL to start or provide depth.

  8. Didn’t think moving Carter to RB would work out. We will now find out if he has the hands to be a receiver, otherwise back to D-Back. You can not coach speed so hopefully they find his spot soon. Agree at receiver he may be the next Henderson, but Henderson had the ability to cut up field so not only fast but great lateral moves, haven’t seen that yet in Carter.

  9. the Pitt offense promises to be more creative this year. But will it be more effective? To me, that is THE question for 2019.

I like the playmakers at the WRs and have less doubt than many that Pitt will again come up with a couple of pretty good, productive RBs. I even have little doubt that the QB position will be more productive.

But that still doesn’t answer the question

And TX, explain to me about Coach Duzz being lazy. I haven’t been around him much, but that statement astounds me.

Coach Duzz seems like a 24/7 football guy to me. He’s not perfect, but he’s obviously driven and he’s obviously hungry, and, for better or worse, if you’re not with him and Pitt then you’re against him and Pitt…

    Go Pitt.

  12. An interesting tidbit of information: Coach Powell was asked about the speed he now has with Carter and Salahuddin in the backfield and he answered that Sibley was faster than the both of them. I’d be willing to bet not many would have put Sibley at 5’9″ 220lbs in the speed burner category.

      1. Well at least schools who win it don’t treat it like something it’s not. They also don’t finish as champions with a .500 record. Those division champs are ranked heading into their bowl games and don’t strike out on them.

Yet Pitt proudly displays a trophy that holds little significance since the Coastal has been won by every school sans Virginia and its arguably the weakest division in all P5.

  17. I am sure Narduzzi never had a recruit run into a Steeler in the hallway, and Conner never stops by the locker room. Narduzzi may be underperforming regarding the high profile guys but to say he is lazy is ludicrous and a cheap shot.

By the way, Capel is in the hunt, but he hasn’t signed any of these big time guys yet. Meeting Seth Curry is really cool but time will tell if it was effective.

The other factor is that Pitt Basketball was pretty darn good recently and won some Big East titles. Pitt Football is a lot heavier lift. Been a long time without any national relevance.

      The program was nearly dead

Capel is recruiting kids who remember that and not ten years ago when Pitt was a number 1 seed from a league that nobody talks about anymore.

It’s been a long time since Pitt won a bowl game and got ranked. Narduzzi had three chances and struck out. Kids that narduzzi is recruiting see that.

      1. Pitt thinks so much of Lyke that she is one of the least compensated ADs in all P5. It also goes to show what Gallagher thinks of that front porch.

And Pitt sports is in a very bad place. The worst showing in over 25 years if you value winning across all sports programs.

But getting back to gasman, I don’t think Pitt has an over/under on wins. There are more factors that go into it and I’m sure they look at trends. But success at Pitt has historically been less defined by the number of wins and more defined by those other factors that generally aren’t given as high a priority by most schools.

As long as attendance doesn’t drop like a rock, a major scandal occurs and academic standards aren’t compromised, Narduzzi will be coach for life.

That means 6-8 win seasons with the occasional bad and breakout year. Consider winning the Coastal a breakout year based on Pitt.

        1. Narduzzi has blown opportunities every season. He’s got to finish ranked and win a bowl game. Period. Even good old Wanny beat NC and one a bowl game (2 if you count the one his DC won). In year 5.

      1. and you are right TX, love your comments for the most part but overstating a comment is hyperbole crap.

This happens every year on the POV, (seriously) it’s almost like we should meet up and play a tackle football game between ourselves? Bernie can be the ref, Fran can be the replay judge and John can do the play by play. I’ll stay on the sideline and coach….. 🙂

        1. Hyberbole is fine. Just need to have thick skin. Talk shows are all about the hyberbole. It can actually draw out folks and create good debate if strategically used. That’s why I used it. It was just one bullet in my Colt. I’m not a gunslinger by nature. But I love a good gunfight.

    3. Not sure how I qualify as POV antis ( not quite sure what that even is).
But I’m not satisfied with mediocrity. Better still, I don’t know why Pitt is satisfied with it.

And, if it frosts your flakes that I ask what the win over/under is before people start complaining, then you, my friend, are looking for a reason to bitch.
That said, I’ll be at the UCF game…I’ll buy you a drink so we can discuss this further.

      1. Calling out the truth is frowned upon in our PC culture and your PC POV. Don’t worry about taking my post down. I won’t post and the usuals can post their passive aggresive comments to anyone with a different opinion. It is a joke.

There will be no explicit reference to genitalia – male or female – joking or otherwise – on this blog. End of discussion

  27. That’s very nice there Lykes travel agent. Now I’m gonna call you a name and I don’t care. Way to hide behind your big talk. I call you a coward for posting such demeaning crap when you do not identify yourself. I have a few more choice names but I’ll keep them to myself. . for now.

On a more serious note. Thinking of two POV friends who have family members that are having serious health issues tonight. Thoughts and prayers being sent out as I type this.

  30. Deleting not because of your position but because of borderline sexist comment. There are a lot of other ways to say that that doesn’t demean due to gender
