First of all, congratulations to Missing WLAT for finding a kidney donor and having his surgery scheduled.  And thanks to all the POV fans who supported him through this time.  I’ve been actively involved (in person, i.e. attending games) with the POV for less than a year and the community has truly made me feel like family, and I think that extends to pretty much anyone who shows up at the tailgate and has a true love for Pitt and that a big part of what makes this blog a special place.   It certainly applies to Eric (i.e. Missing WLAT) and we are all grateful to hear the good news about him.

On to this week’s links:

  1.  Looks like two Pantherlair podcasts have been published in the last week, and both have to deal with recruiting.  I haven’t listened, but a good conversation starter if anyone cares to throw out some observations.  Link here
  2. I did read Chris Peak’s 3-2-1 column a few days ago and I found it informative as always.  Here he breaks down the schedule and gives a little bit of history regarding our ACC Coastal foes.  Turns out Narduzzi does pretty well against most of them.   Link here
  3. Things are relatively quiet on PSN.  Here is a piece that was probably inspired by some of the chatter on this blog about Pitt’s overall sports Learfield Cup ranking (i.e. dead last.)  Alan Saunders quotes AD Heather Lyke:“It’s one measure. It’s a competitive measure, right? So it doesn’t measure the quality of our student-athlete experience and the amount of life skills, mentoring and development that we put in, career enhancement. It doesn’t measure your academic success and graduation success rates and things like that. But it certainly measures competitive success. It’s something that we focus on and definitely aspire to improve.”  Link here
  4. In basketball news, Karim Coulibaly could be a good one.  He certainly performed well in against the world’s top Under 19 year olds, including 17 pts against the USA.  Link here.

  1. Speaking of our favorite AD, I hear her quite often on The Fan telling us to call our cable provider to pick up the new ACCN. I have a rewrite she is welcome to use …

Hello, I’m Heather Lyke, athletic director at the University of Pittsburgh. And if you are a typical Pitt fan, you have rarely attended a Pitt football game and never contributed to the school’s athletic fund, but you will be the first to complain about the school or the administration when the team isn’t doing as well as you expected …. because that is what you do.

Now be prepared to complain even harder this year as when you take your usual seat on your easy chair in the living room to watch Pitt play Virginia in the opener, you will not be able the find the game on your TV. That is because this year, many of the games will be telecast on the new ACCN which will not be available to you. And of course, you will blame this situation on me and my administration as if we had any say here ….. because this is what you do.

But don’t fret! Your beloved Steelers will be starting up the following week. Yes, the same Steelers of which you wouldn’t think about paying over twice the amount of to see them play on a Sunday at Heinz Field while the thought of paying much less to see a game on Saturday at Heinz never crossed your mind. And whether you stay at home or go to watch the Steelers play, you will still have your pick of several radio channels to listen to both a 3 hour pregame and postgame presentation, not to mention several hours a day throughout the week analyzing the game …. because that is what you do.

And hey, just a month later, your beloved Penguins will begin play, and of course, each of its 82 league games is so much more important than any college football game. Don’t let the fact that the best regular season team by far this past season was swept in 4 straight to begin the playoffs, while the league’s worst team as late as last January would go on to win the cup sway you … because that is what you do.

Of course, you always have the option to call your cable provider and DEMAND them to pick up the new ACCN, but don’t bother … because that is what you don’t do.

I love the tweet by Damar Hamlin, those pictures bring back a lot of great memories. But at the same time they make me wistful for an OCS. Maybe someday…

Heather did her best to deflect with talk about graduation rates and GPA’s. I’ll give her credit there.

And Pitt has no imagination and it cannot believe. That is why it fails. Hamlin gets it.

The parking pass is for Green 23- directly North of Gate C (about a 2-3 minute walk to the gate.).

I am about to cut the cable and exist on web streaming services. I am currently planning to go with Sling TV, which has already agreed to carry the ACC Network. My preference would have been Hulu, but there is (as yet) no announcement of carrying the ACCnet. Expecting to save about $90/mo from current cable TV charges.

Has anyone heard of other options that carry the ACCnet, and is anyone also “cutting the cord” or has done so and can comment on their views? I live in New Orleans, and has been watching Pitt football using ESPNU through my cable provider (Spectrum). Being a 35 yr Pittsburgh resident of the past, am still a major Steeler fan, and short of buying an NFL package ($150?) on cable, also on my wishlist is getting Steeler games?

I have no way of knowing how we will do but at least we have an idea that our D will be solid (even though they were 0-3 to end the year) Poor recruiting on the O side since Duzz has been in charge and back to Chryst’s years with no QB recruiting leaves a big question regarding the O…it’s not like we go through a season then re-load…wouldn’t it be nice..but we have a developmental roster probably like most of D1 FB…..CFB It’s the most wonderful time of the year!!!!!!!!!.

Yes, six or seven regular season wins sounds about right. Eight is possible, but so is five.

VT wins the coastal, with Miami second, and Pitt, VA, and Syracuse in a three-way tie for third. Clemson wins the other half of the ACC.

Pitt wins its bowl game and ends the season ranked #26. 🙂

@Isnore – My condolences on your loss brother. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I try each day to find something positive to say to and about my wife. She deserves more, but as men, we tend to fail miserably about communicating such things to our rocks. Funny thing is, they know we feel that way and still accept us as the blundering fools that we are. Amazing!

This is a place where the collective group celebrates life’s victories, Pitt’s occasional victories and unfortunately life’s losses.

At the end of the day, the POV “WE ARE”, trumps the dairy we are, by a landslide. At the POV, we are a relative collection of individuals that mostly cannot agree on anything, yet it is a place where everybody can come to escape for a few minutes a day to relax. Thanks to all of you for that.

Welp – Khem Burch just signed a 2 year 6M contract with orlando. He has been productive in his limited minutes the last few years. I have no cmments on the 2 bball recruits. I guess we need practice players for this year to push the dudes we got. Nice tweet by Hamlin!

  27. Joe Flacco’s 2012 Super Bowl MVP game..

“In a 34–31 win over the favored San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII, played on February 3, 2013, Flacco completed 22 of 33 passes for 287 yards and another three touchdowns, tying him for first place on the list of most consecutive playoff games with at least three touchdown passes (3 games). With a record fourth playoff game with a 100+ passer rating in a single postseason,[4] Flacco was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.[52] For winning the award, he was given a then-brand-new red Chevrolet Corvette.

Flacco finished the postseason having completed 73-of-126 (57.9 percent) passes for 1,140 yards with 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions, tying Montana and Kurt Warner for the most touchdowns in a single postseason[67] and additionally tying Montana for the most touchdowns without an interception in a single postseason.[68] Flacco’s 117.2 passer rating tied him for third place all-time with Steve Young in a Super Bowl-winning postseason.[68]”

The thing with Flacco from my perspective is, of course he turned out to be a very good NFL quarterback with a long career, but he was also beat out by a good, but less talented QB at Pitt due most likely to favoritism, so he picks up and moves to prove himself, and frankly that’s pretty admirable. He didn’t give up. Talent is so often overlooked in every sport, though probably a lot more so in basketball.

  28. So with the Dellawhere transfer, the player must sit out a year. Does that mean Capel is not thinking he could get a 4 star point guard or better next year too? That is either a really bad sign of his recruiting confidence for the 2021 year or he just wants some insurance for the 4 star he hasn’t received a commitment from yet.

The walk-on apparently attended same high school where capel’s dad coached? There is a link there somewhere. The kid is scrappy from what i read. Not a shooter. Maybe he brings in the scrapper to go against the current guards everyday to make them better, kind of like Carl Krauser did with (knight or fields), can’t remember. Krauser was street ball and an awesome defender.

  32. The legacy of Tyler Palko is interesting .. he was the 2nd local 4-star QB brought in by Walt Harris and played behind the 1st one, Rod Rutherford. He played mop-up as freshman but redshirted his 2nd year while Luke Getsy played Rutherford’s back-up. Then after Rutherford graduated, Palko took over as No. 1 which angered Getsy who transferred to Akron. This meant an unknown frosh Flacco became back-up.

Flacco may have been brought in because a 3rd local 4-star QB, Anthony Morelli, decommitted and signed with ‘The University of Penn State’ It was rumored that rival recruiters (probably Tom Bradley) told him that the reason why Morelli didn’t get selected to play in a national all-star game (in which Palko had previously played in) was because of Bob Palko’s influence .. which was denied by the game organizers.

When Wanny took over, Palko started the spring game and a month or so later Flacco transferred out. Thus Palko was the apparent reason that Getsy, Flacco and Morelli left Pitt

Palko did lead the Pitt to its only BCS bowl but it was in a pretty weak league but he did have a really good senior season in a much better conference … where Lousiville, WVU and Rutgers all fisnhed in the Top 12 (USF was also ranked)

    https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/conferences/big-east/2006.html

Despite his weak arm, Palko lasted in the NFL with various teams from 2007 thru 2011

  42. I hope you all listen to Peaks explanation on how Rivals come up with rankings, which BTW, PITT is still ranked 26th. With only 16 commits, if PITT can add two 3* and two 2* players, they will only move up in the rankings. That said, Narduzzi seems to land a bigger recruit closer to LOI day. There’s a few more coming PITT’s way.

    1. But there are like ten schools below Pitt that will surpass Pitt once they hit 16 recruits. Pitt will finish ranked around 35. But where they finish relative to other schools in the Coastal is more important. Pitt still needs more hogs and a playmaker or two in this class.

  44. Just saw the nice note from Huff III re @Isnore loss of his wife. As a widower myself (wife passed 16 mos ago after 48 yrs together; we met at Pitt), I can only offer that the passage of time helps, and to allow the grieving process as much time as you need. As a retiree, I am lucky to have my family close by, enjoy playing keyboards, bitching about politics, and of course Pitt/Saints/Steelers football, to help me look forward to my future years. I even got a complete checkup by a cardiologist in June to prepare for the stress of Pitt football!!

BTW… just curious if there are other widowers on this POV site?

            1. Drove by the Acworth exit on 75 Tuesday late afternoon when the big tstorms hit. Too much traffic man, wow! I could never sit in that every day.

Had I known you were so close Mike, i would have sent you a note. Do you golf? I get down to eastlake every 2-3 years for some golf, if interested. Quick story and it is 100% true. On my first invite there I had an old golf bag filled with shag balls and it weighed a lot more than the newer light bags, etc. My caddie was a towering african american and when he picked it up, he grimaced and I could tell he was upset because of its weight. Eventually the caddie busted my chops about the weight of my bag. It was like 90’s hot too. When we were on 17, one of the guys I was golfing with got a text which asked if he wanted to bring our group back the following week. We were cutting up pretty good and had raised/donated some good money for charity. Anyway, our foursome asked if we could have the same caddies. We were told yes! All the caddies were happy but mine. I promised the caddie that I would buy a “light bag” when I got home…and with that, he agreed to be my caddie the following week.

The next week i showed up and kept my promise, a light bag. He met me at the bag drop and smiled when he saw the bag. Welcome back Mr. D. I told him that i always keep my promises and he said yes sir, you do. With that, he picked up the bag and immediately grimaced. I tried not to laugh and told him to meet me on the driving range. When he got there he politely said, you did keep your promise sir and I agreed to carry your bag, but can I ask you to look in your bag to see if there is something you could take out to lighten the load? I said, you’re kidding right? He replied, no sir, it’s okay, I’ll do it. We all had fun last time, so it’s okay sir. At the 3rd hole, on the tee, I decide to tell the rest of my foursome that Thomas complained about the weight of my bag and asked me to lighten it up on him.The other caddies started to ride Thomas a bit because of his stature.

With that, I started opening up the bag compartments on the tee box and removed one brick at a time! I stuffed 5 bricks in the bag in total. Thomas and my foursome busted out loudly and laughed until they cried. We left the bricks on the tee box and laughed our way down the fairway. We laughed non stop for 15 holes. Thomas indicated it was the best round of his life and that he never had as much fun on the course as he did that day. It was short lived however. The President of the course was playing behind us and was steaming mad at our behavior. I gave a big donation and a huge apology. Thanks for letting me share.

              1. 😂😂😂 that may be the best golf story I’ve ever heard. I’m still learning the game and to be honest I probably won’t be able to invest too much time into it until the kids are about 10 years older. But never say never. At the very least we need to catch up at the GA tech game. As far as 75 traffic…well let’s just say the express lane is well worth $3 a day!

  50. To all POV’ers….I truly appreciate the kind thoughts that you have sent my way regarding my wife’s
passing. Give your loved one an extra hug because losing that special person you share your life
with is a very cold empty place. Rosalee and I were married for 51 years.
My wife passed away from complications caused by Alzheimer’s.

In our house the world STOPPED when a Pitt football or basketball game was televised. Yep,
my lady went to Brooklyn College an excellent academic school with little in the way of sports heritage.
Living in Central Pennsylvania (the land of MOO U) she knew that a Pitt game was therapy despite the
many disasters that seemed to come our way! I look forward to the start of the football season
and I know that my wife in a better place will hear me say Hail to Pitt!

  52. So, the no-star three-point shooter got me to wondering…
I mean, Wilson-Frame wasn’t exactly Mr. Quick, but I thought he did fairly well for Pitt last season.

Turns out that JWF shot 38.1% from three for the regular season and 38.4% in the ACC.

Here are some team stats for 3-point shooting from last season:

    NCAA rank — School — 3%
    7 — UVA @ 39.5%
    8 — VT @ 39.4
    90 — UNC @ 36.2
    132 — NCS @ 35
    232 — Miami @ 33.3
    233 — Syr @ 33.3
    245 — PITT @ 33.1
    256 — Clemson @. 32.8

    328 — Duke @ 30.8

So Pitt’s 3-point shooting was okay, but our overall FG% was a poor 41.8% which ranked a dismal #302. (Whereas Duke’s overall FG% was an excellent 47.8% ranking them at #26 in that category.)

Just thought some of those numbers were interesting and surprising…

    Go Pitt.

This is the younger Egerton — not the Elton John “Rocket Man” version…
