  2. Seriously… no reason why Capel can’t COACH this Team to a win tonight.

Anyone want to argue that Miami is simply TOO GOOD to put everything bad that happens on the Players and not on Capel and his Staff?

X-man with a lot of turnovers; no help from Brown inside… When JWF, of all players, missed two free throws late, you knew any chance was gone…

  7. It’s very hard to coach a team that is badly outmatched talent wise every night.

I got to do it in AAU. We had the best 15-16 yr old talent in little Harford County MD. We could beat every team around us handily but when we went to DC Tourneys we were often down 30 at the half. I learned to set small goals, work on fundamentals and coach differently than I would if we were evenly matched. We finally pulled a huge upset in our last game in Frederick but it was an excruciating season that wore all of us to a frazzle.

Capel has never had such an undermanned team. I’m sure he’s stunned by the weekly ineptitude of this young team. No one and I mean no one can prepare for the week in week out beatings that Pitt has taken.

So (POD et al). Please lighten up in your criticism of Capel. We are blessed to have him and once we have some talent and seasoning, you will be more than pleased with his competence as a head coach!

  8. Agree with Dan on talent disparity but if Pitt won’t “take care” of parents or “uncles”, can we ever compete with the top of the ACC?

  9. Dan.., Certainly respect your position on Capel. I’m just seeing a lot of BAD Basketball. For example, the repeated failures of Pitt to get back on Defense in the first half to prevent DEEP passes going the other way.

    Some really basic stuff.

    1. There is a huge difference trying to ingrain freshmen players with good habits vs older veteran players. An old adage is “that the only good thing about freshmen is that they are sophomores next year”. As a coach, you can preach…. reinforce …and preach again but still in the heat of battle the same mistakes occur. For instance, I saw Xman do something at the foul line I’ve never seen him do before ….pull his elbow into his body before his shot. He missed 4 in a row.

An older experienced player would know, you never exoeriment a new move in a game setting!

I assure you POD that I am as frustrated as anyone having to watch this horrible basketball night after night. I also assure you….IT IS THE PLAYERS!

Better times ahead with better players.

  10. It was a whole lot more entertaining watching 3 hours of “Arnie” on the Golf Channel last night – Tom Selleck did a great job as the narrator.

I’ll wait until next season to watch the SO’s beat up on the ACC with hopefully a few added mates.

Heather is drawing some comparisons to former AD Barnes. She played softball, ran off one of Pitt’s all time best coaches, 6 of 9 position starters returned along with 3 of 4 pitchers. The new HC, which Heather hired has started 3-15 and is playing poor D. Uh-oh…the ACC games are now up on the schedule. It won’t get any easier. I wonder if there was a search firm involved.

  11. Don’t get me started on the AD Erie or Ike will yell at me…….

Pitt tried to be politically correct and hired for diversity. If you want to compete, you hire the best, regardless of age, race or gender. Pitt went for the diverse hire to go along with the PC culture in higher ed. Not the AD’s fault.

Terrible records in football, basketball (mens and womens), softball, baseball…. ugggh!

Look, some of the new hires will do well because the odds say they will. Others won’t. I do consider Narduzzi a hire by our current AD because she had a choice to extend him or search for new. She chose to extend him and as such, he too, is a hire. That all being said, I want Pitt Athletics to be excellent.

  12. PoD. for you to imply Pitt has been losing to EQUAL talent says a lot about you. There are THREE ACC players on the team and two of them are 18 years old FRESHMEN. One of the ISSUES this team has is that they have played the WORST ACC teams on the road.

This CRUSADE you are waging against the Pitt coaches is the best example of POV CYNICISM. I especially enjoyed the one about HCPN not being able to charm the freshman LB from not leaving. If every transfer is the fault of the HC, then there approx. 130 bad coaches in D1 these days.

  14. PoD, what you do not realize is what SOP actually means. It means that something has been wrong over an extended period of time. Thus, it is not so much the current coaches … but the admin which really didn’t prioritize athletics (and especially the FB program) over the past 30 plus years.

Someone just posted a graphic that Pitt FB only finished in Top 20 twice in the 2000s. Well you can also add the 90s to that. And to take the current staff to task which had to face a harder schedule and less area quality recruits than any of his predecessors is not fair. The same applies to Capel …. if anyone ever took over a shipwreck, it was him, I can’t remember the Pitt BB program ever being so bad when he took over (and that’s saying something)

    1. I wish someone would explain this argument to me.

So by being a Pitt fan I am encouraging the university to maintain mediocre sports programs? ( Shame on Lastrow and Scooter for going to all those BB games last season, right?)

But on the other hand we pay the Doozer too much for the number of wins he gets?

I would like Pitt to excel in all areas, academically and sports-wise. (I just wanted to get that on the record. 😊)

And to help that come about I donate to the Engineering School and a couple of the sports programs. I wish I had millions, or even thousands, to give them, but I don’t.

Are we seeing that with Capel? If so, then there’s nothing to worry about.

    1. I didn’t say Chryst did a poor job, especially on the offensive end. But what he took over was far from the shipwreck that Capel did … not even close. Capel has a complete rebuild to do. And unlike Chryst, he has to play against several highly rated teams.

  17. A couple notes:

Last night I had a nice chat with Mark (Upitt) by text. Of course he started out with the obligatory remark about Rock-ports. Mark keeps telling me he’s going to chip in with a comment real soon so I really hope he finally does. The POV is a better place with him a part of it.

Read where Rashad Wheeler will be tried at O-Line this spring. Raises a chicken or the egg question. Dies that mean PITT is loaded on the D-Line or weak at the O-Line position? or is just becoming a giant and outgrew the D if that’s even possible.

PITT basketball loses to a bad team last night who 2 or their 3 top players are seniors, plus it was on the road. I don’t put much stock into this season other than to look at the effort the kids put into each and every game. Which I think they do.

There’s a nice thread about favorite places to get your Lenten fish sandwich that I enjoyed reading but it made me think if we did that over here how would that work out? By that I mean, I’m thinking 50% of the common posters on the POV are no longer living in this area. Plus the fact that Friday fish fries are not nearly as popular in other regions in the US. Made me wonder if out Texas posters can even get a decent fish sandwich down there.

Diallo and Khadim Sy would turn PITT basketball fortunes around in a very big hurry. PITT needs the both of them.

    So long.. …ike

Beat ND and win 1 game in the ACC tournament and the off season will be more palatable. Looking forward to the uniform announcement in April and the new ACC network. PLEASE do not give Tom Wormy much time on the new network. Glad that Pitt is in the ACC and not Big Ten, AAC, or Big East. Read an article in the local news that Big Ten admitted MD and Rutgers to appease PSU, who was on an island far away from most other Big ten Teams. MD should come back to the ACC. But before the only Coach they ever had retired, and they hired away Pitt’s coach, Holly April’s, they had won over 30 games each season since 2004. And in 6 of the last 15 years they won 45 or more games per season. In 2012 they went 55 and 5. Pretty impressive, I would guess.

Also, Holly had been at Pitt for something like 15 years as an assistant and then head coach… I imagine she got a nice raise to go to Louisville.

“That’s really all I’ll say. You’ll see,” Pitt’s rising junior quarterback said Wednesday at the end of the first day of spring football drills.

My point is what’s up with the word “rising?” Ya, I know it’s been in vogue for a little while. But, really Jerry, what exactly does it mean?

Rising to becoming a Senior? Rising to six feet four? Rising everyday at the crack of dawn?

Guess I could be OK with it so long as “falling” gets its EQUAL time.

  37. DiPaola is using it wrong. The term “rising” is meant to be used between grades to signify a student is ascending to the next grade…so the summer between your junior and senior years you are a rising senior.

Some schools refer to fifth year seniors as Supet Seniors. Who knew ?

I’m sorry for the delayed update, but work came first and it was a two week barrage (Good, but intense).

This will be brief as I’m having coffee and breakfast, then rushing out to a 7:30am meeting.

We have 22 golfers who have given us a verbal commitment to attend the 3rd POV Golf Outing on May 31st at Meadia Heights Golf Club in Lancaster, PA. So far, only one of the three Pitt celebrities have committed, with one maybe and the third with a scheduling conflict.

As you know with all things Pitt, a verbal commitment doesn’t seal the deal. The menu was set yesterday and final costs are being tallied. Once we have all of the details nailed down, we will send an article request to Michaelangelo so we can turn those verbals into signed (and paid) commitments.

There are about 8 to 10 maybe golfers yet to secure and another 2 or 3 maybe dinner guests.

Enjoy the rest of Spring Practices. Let me know if anything happens that guarantees a ten win season.

BTW, I received a postcard in the mail yesterdsy from Duzz reminding me that today is the deadline to renew my season tickets. Really? That is the best he can do? This is a detailed list of the Kool Ayde Drinkers.

    Next question, please!

  45. Oh my Ike… do you, perhaps, think there might be a reason you don’t see those names much anymore??

This site has been leaning toward being a cheerleading blog for some time now and while that is Mike’s prerogative, many of the original commenters miss the more ‘opened eyed’ approach and having articles that address the warts and shortcomings of the FB program also.

If any kool aid needs to be found one needs to look no further then today’s POV… And if that is what the current readers want that is apparently what they will get.

    1. Reed in case you didn’t notice most of those named left the POV well before MM took over. In fact many of the so named left just prior to Pitt winning the Coastal Division when they couldn’t lambaste Narduzzi week in and week out and still be considered credible.

      1. Thanks jrn but seriously, the list was about out of towner’s and the lack of their ability to offer local fish fry recommendations.

        1. I know that Ike but I was just trying to make the point that any cheerleading didn’t just come about when MM took over. And most certainly the many names that left did so when it looked like Pitt was going to win the Coastal and certainly not because the “POV” turned into a cheerleading squad for Pitt Football.

          Liked by 2 people

          1. Yes jrn, some take a PITT win or loss a little too hard and some take a PITT win or loss a little more in stride. Too each our own and thanks again, I did feel like I was a bit blindsided by Reed.

While I didn’t mean to bring up the subject, I do miss a few posters but at the same time, love the more positive vibe on the POV. jus imo.. . .. ike

    2. Come on Reed, get over yourself, LOL.

Some posters left before you gave up the POV.
Some left when the WordPress sign up was mandatory.
Some left when MM took over.
Some were gained during all those times.
I am sure you can get the numbers.

IMO, it was never the article type (positive or negative) and never will be. The articles are the engine of the POV. The fuel, sometimes explosive, are the posters. 🙂

Some people get too caught up in the comments and take them personally or get sick of all negative or all positive comments.

  46. Well, here’s another of Pitt’s warts.

Kenny “Snooker” Pickett has done it again. First he totally duped Coach Watson. Got Watson to speak in glowing terms about Kenny’s abilities at QB. We saw where that led.

Now KP has already totally snookered Coach Whip. Here’s what Coach Whip said about KP after only one day of practice:

“He’s awesome,” Whipple said Wednesday. “He’s a good player, got a chance to be a great player. His attitude, you know, I probably got to get him to loosen up a little bit; I can be tough on those guys some. He loves to play, he competes, he’s worked at it, studies a lot, asks questions and he’s great. I think he’s got a really bright future.”

Sheesh! So much for the open QB competition!

    Go Pitt.

  47. Reed, excuse me but the real answer I was looking for was that all those posters no longer live in the 412 or 724 area code. Seriously Reed, that list contains commenters of all types. My point was to point out the great diversity of the POV.

  48. The problem may be major that at this point in time there may be very little competition on the roster. Beville is so green that he will need some time adjusting to college life and the speed of P5 football to be considered competition as of now. George is a statue back there in the pocket with little to no running ability. And finally IMO Patti will probably give Pickett the most competition but with Zero game playing time as of now he’s got to show a lot in the Spring practice and Summer pre season practices to challenge Pickett for #1.

  49. and a BTW, the second Josh in Altoona was suppose to be Zach in Altoona and I assumed Savannah was being sarcastic. The reason for the out of town list was a carry over from a comment I made yesterday referring to all the displaced PITT fans that would be of no help in identifying a good place to get some Lenten fish fry food in the area. That’s the truth Reed..

  50. Here’s an excerpt from my comment yesterday @ 9:47 3/7/2019.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Made me wonder if our Texas posters can even get a decent fish sandwich down there.”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++

That list was in no way about the particular demeanor’s of those individual posters. Look closer guys. I did correct a misspelled word in this quote.

  52. The below is an interesting read. In a nutshell, the head basket coach at LSU may have been wiretapped making offer to a current LSU player/guard. What makes this most interesting is that a Pitt prospect Diallo, a 7 footer, has pared his final list of three to Pitt, OSU and LSU and has not visited LSU and OSU.

    https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/lsu-coach-will-wade-discussed-an-offer-to-a-recruit-with-a-key-figure-in-corruption-trial-on-a-wiretap-a-report-says/

In one way this can be awesome that we might be “in the game”. In another way, this could be terrible that two other schools are on his final list without even visiting them, which could mean the other schools are playing the game and Pitt is not.

    1. If this happened at Pitt, Pitt would voluntarily go on a 10 year probation
Thats the difference between Pitt and other schools that play the game
      All the elites cheat
Its just now the FBI is involved
The NCAA has always turned a blind eye and has never policed this stuff
I’m pretty sure Capel has played the game

You are totally wrong about my not posting(and I would guess others). I actually love the site as it is now, AND loved it as you ran it. The tone is different but frankly I prefer the positive tilt even though I would characterize it as closer to BALANCED now.

I’ve been busy with work and kids stuff. Son got injured again at the end of year tournament time but still was able to place 4th in Maryland States in wrestling. If he was perfectly OK, I honestly don’t see him beating the senior 1st place finisher as he got beaten by him 6-3 in regionals this year and is the kid against whom he broke his shoulder and who has not lost a match(about 89-0) in winning state titles here in Maryland for the last 2 years straight.

I will be back. I do wish the hoops team had shown better progression and probably would be commenting more IF they were winning. Not sure I will get season tickets again, at least not 4,,,but maybe.

  60. Ike – just got in from Atlanta this week, and wanted to reply to you 4:02 post this afternoon. You certainly didn’t need to explain yourself! You asked a good question, and I saw an opportunity for a little sarcasm – and jumped on it. Your immediate response showed that you saw the sarcasm. And I think everybody (well almost everybody) else did, too.

I enjoy your commentary. And I want to thank you for giving me a fastball right over the plate!!

It’s really hard to get excited about Pitt these days – the wrestling team goes for an ACC title this weekend in Blacksburg, VA and the NCAA championships will be held in Pittsburgh with BIG crowds expected.

A friend sent me this 5 to 6 minute clip – Dream On!

I could not find anything from the Pitt athletic marketing team…

Gives you an idea as to why he was Parade Magazine’s Player of the Year and to this day considered by many to be the BEST High School Football Player ever to come out of Western Pa.

Kind of puts today’s REGULAR Four and Five Star Backs into perspective.
