I don’t write a lot about basketball because football is my first love, but I know enough about the roundball game to be dangerous, and there is no harm in reporting the news.

It’s no news that Pitt is on the schnide.   Pitt lost their 8th straight against a mediocre BC squad last night, mostly due to poor shooting and a continued inability to solve the 2-3 zone.  Say what you want about Dixon’s lack of ability to get this team past a certain level, but his disciplined offense could pick apart that zone.  It will be interesting to see how Capel addresses this in the offseason (through  coaching).   Lack of depth and lack of big men are not helping either.

The good news is that we all knew this would be a rebuilding year, and with a couple of ACC wins under their belt and some very competitive losses, Pitt has probably already exceeded expectations (granted the bar was set so low…).  Of course when a young team with a couple of talented young players, and a talented, likeable coach flashes…expectations do tend to move.

Nonetheless, most fans are keeping things in perspective, I think.

Meanwhile, help appears to be on the way.  Capel landed his first 2019 recruit this week, 6’6″ wing Gerald Drumgoole, and this was widely regarded as a very good thing.

  1. I am a bit skeptical of this answering the need for “bigs”.
    Today 6’6″ is not a big. And come to think of it never was 6’6″ a big.

    6’9″ with freaky long wingspan is the start of a big.

    If this is great news and the “hot recruiting” we are waiting for, I really dread the bad news…..maybe even dread the “good” news that we hope? is coming.

  2. everyone knew rebounding would be a big problem, and I place it above poor shooting when it comes to Pit’s woes this year …. because it affects both ends of the court. Not only do we rarely get 2nd chance points, it seems we give up almost as many 2nd/3rd chance points as first hand.

    I will guarantee we will see either a big JUCO or grad transfer to go along with a couple bif freshman (6’8 or bigger) There is room for 6 new players. We have one commit and even if we get the twins, there is still room 3 more … and at least 2 more will be bigs.

    A few observations about Pitt basketball:

    The misery of last year’s team and everything that went with that are largely forgotten. Good in that misery of that sort is best put behind us, bad in that many seem to think that we should now be winning again.

    When you hit absolute bottom in coaching, player personnel, fan support, there can be no overnight turn a round. Many seem to forget that half of this year’s team are the same guys that played last year.

    Speaking of the fans, while they are significantly back on board at the Pete, they have disappeared from this board, no thread last night and few comments and Pitt Blather is pretty much dead, so interest is still way down.

    Although they are not yet winning, this team is so far superior to last year’s it isn’t even close. While still outmanned in virtually every game, they do not quit and have kept games close in most cases.

    Holdovers from last year, Frame, Brown, Chukwuku and Davis are all playing significantly better than last year, but really are not ACC caliber players. Brown and Chukwulu may get there over the next two years, but none would get many minutes on most ACC teams.

    The three freshman have been asked to do too much. Johnson has held up best, but even he had a bad game last night. McGowen is still playing great defense, something totally absent last year, but has lost his confidence on offense and doesn’t seem able to finish his drives. Toney shows flashes but gets lost in the wash.

    N’Dir has been a solid sixth man, but has missed games to injury. Ellison has not added much other than a body Frame has been better, but just not good enough to come through at crunch time, nor has anyone else.

    Overall shooting percentage just isn’t good enough to win in the ACC, and the lack of depth causes defensive lapses at the end of games because of tired legs.

    But what Capel has done in less than a year is nothing short of miraculous. If he gets the right players and with another year of coaching and physical maturity, this team will be middle of the pack next year.

  4. When you are shooting at 29% and 27% for threes and the other team is at 46 and 44% you won’t win many games. Especially when your socalled best three point guy goes 4-15.

    By the way does anyone else think Bowman is one and done? Never saw a college broadcast give a guy a split screen before, what is up with that?

        But the limited amount of time Trey guarded Bowman, he held him in check. When Trey went to the bench for a breather, Bowman scored six straight buckets.

  5. The basketball program is absolutely moving upward! Yes, we will need a legit center to clog the middle and rebound, but what is also interesting is that some of the hottest teams in the country have all very athletic players who run the court and don’t wait for a big man to get down the court. Maybe the best example of this faster approach is Texas Tech. ( Because my oldest son got his BS and Masters there I pay attention to them). They are crazy fast and exciting and very good. So even if we don’t land a true big man there are other options. Coach Capel will bring top talent to Pitt and load the bench because in my opinion he has the “IT FACTOR” to make this program a perennial top 25 team quickly.

  6. Most of Jamie’s really good players didn’t get there until junior and senior years. Other than Blair and James Robinson I don’t remember many contributing as freshmen. Patterson, Young, Zanna, most of his centers needed to mature. It will take a few more years to compete at a high level.

    1. this is the formula for Pitt sports. While you will always accept 4 or 5 stars with open arms, the core of the teams are these players who develop and become pretty good players by their 3rd year or so

    2. Yeah GC, a good example is Chevy. As a freshman, he mainly would catch a pass and immediately look for who to pass it to. Virtually no thought of shooting or taking it to the hoop – just don’t make a mistake with it.

      I think that in both BB and FB, we just expect way too much of these guys in their first and second years. We’re at the opposite end of the spectrum from the one-and-done schools…

  7. My beef is with Terrill Brown. I thought he had NBA talent and used to go crazy when our guards would not even throw him the ball.

    Last night he fumbled 4 entry passes to the post. All turnovers.
    He has no moves and cannot even pin his man down on the low blocks. Yes he plays some D but he is just killing this teams progress.

    2. I think Brown is playing much better than I thought he would. He has very weak hands and bobbles too many passes and rebounds. Does not have quick feet. Basketball moves do not come naturally to him and he is not aggressive by nature. That being said, I think he is much better than last year and is coming along fairly well. He is now dunking more aggressively and is a decent shot blocker. Hopefully another year in the weight room will improve his physicality which is almost non existent. Nothing seems to come naturally to him and it looks like he is thinking before acting. He is probably getting good coaching for the first time in his life. I think he will look a lot better next year, especially if they get a power forward to play next to him.

  8. Brown does not have the motor for basketball. He just might become a good bowler though? They need to strengthen his hands light a fire in him. I will say he’s every bit as good as a true sophomore as McGhee and Morningstar were.

  9. Glad to see good news on the recruiting front. I think the Frosh have hit a wall the past few weeks. Nice wins vs. the ‘Ville and Florida St.and then a couple of clunkers like last night. Hopefully, they can work through it and win a few more games. Program definitely trending upward. So glad we don’t have to listen to GS anymore…When he was fired, it truly was the end of an error. H2P!

  10. Our approach against zone defenses is perplexing. I’m guessing it’s because we just don’t have a player with the skills to attack the zone like Dixon’s teams did. We don’t have a player to handle that role of taking the ball along the foul line and either shooting or drawing the defense and passing it…

    HOWEVER, maybe we just got that player in Gerald Drumgoole. From what I read he’s strength’s are shooting and passing, and he’s 6-5 and maybe will grow another inch or two…

    At any rate, you know Coach Capel will be recruiting “answers” for zone defenses.

    Regarding recruiting, I’ve had a change of heart. I initially thought we needed 2 big men, a freshman and an upperclassman (JUCO or grad transfer), and although I still think that would be ideal, I no longer care that much about that. The stats for this team tell me we need shooters, so I’m really thinking we just need to find the best players available at this point, I think we could get away with 2 guys that are 6’7″ and/or 6’8″ that could put the ball in the basket and know how to rebound. Our problem now with our bigs is they don’t rebound well, and I don’t think that’s something they will learn, we need to recruit guys that are naturally strong in that area even if they aren’t true Centers, as long as they have some length. My preference at this point would be Coulibaly or Hugley plus an upper classman. Really, I guess I’d prefer Coulibaly from the little I’ve seen/read, but even one young big plus a 6’7″ guy that was a good rebounder would be a big step, then we could hope for a really good big in 20′.

  13. LOL wwb, I was going for a little more obscure player. Knight was very special and played a zillion years in the NBA. Of course he was local, Braddock I believe? Not many of his caliber growing up in WPA anymore.

    1. Got to meet Billy Knight and Charles Smith at a pre-game event last FB season.

      Smith was like a super-tall, skinny, long-limbed alien; while Knight was, at least to me, surprisingly large and broad-shouldered. Knight seemed like twice as wide as Smith.

      Both were great to say hello to – and seemed to be having a good time.

  14. I’m not seeing ACC talent in the Champagnie twins, but Capel knows a hell of a lot more than me. Right now he just needs bodies in this class and the rest will work itself out later. Koulibay, Drumgoole, Champagnie twins and a grad-transfer big would be a good haul.

    I really hope the kid at Penn State, Watkins, leaves as a grad transfer. He’d be a solid addition if Gallagher would allow him and his rap sheet into Pitt.

I know what you’re saying Nate re the Champagnie twins, I thought the same, I guess just because any highlights looked like they played against weak competition, but I also think I saw somewhere where Julian was ranked in the top 100 (2020) and the other was in the top 150, which is not bad at all.

    I’m not sure about Watkins, he’s certainly good, but is Pitt in position to take in guys with character issues while trying to build a program? Capel seems to demand a lot of his players, not sure how problem children would fit in here.

  19. Duan (sp?) Blair was 6″7″ ish with long arms and was a beast on the boards. Brown is 6″10″ with long arms and not a beat on he boards. Rebounding is mostly desire, effort and heart. Height is not critical.

  21. –For some reason, thinking about Pitt’s rebounding problems made me think of the old coach/announcer Al McGuire. Al would say that Pitt needs an “aircraft carrier” in the post. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think a big butt was the prime requisite to be a McGuire “aircraft carrier”…

    If you notice, the guys Brown goes up against nearly always have more mass and broader shoulders – and everyone of them has a bigger butt! 🙂

Also, players moving from team to team creating super teams every two years. I’ll take Roberto Clemente jogging out to right field for the Pirates for 17 straight years.

Roberto story. 71 world series and Clemente, who was known as a bit of a complaining type, was pointing out the horrible outfield turf at Baltimore Memorial Stadium when the recently dearly departed Frank Robinson, who also played right field, told Roberto to clam down and he would show Clemente how to play the position. 7 games later and Roberto Clemente was the World Series MVP. Bad idea to disrespect Roberto. Just like you didn’t want to knock him down with a high inside pitch. Seemed like he batted .700 after he was brushed back by a pitch.

  34. Pitt women’s BB team got their first ACC win of the season tonight against UNC. The score was 91 to 78. Very surprising, but it was one of those nights where everything was falling for Pitt. They ended up shooting 59% from the floor and 11 for 19 from 3. Big games by Garven, Walsh and Bradley. Walsh sort of set the tone in the 1st quarter by hitting 4 three-pointers.

    I’m happy for Coach White and the staff and the team. Great effort tonight. I was afraid they were headed for an 0 for the ACC season…

    And if I never see the name of our previous coach in the same paragraph with Pitt again I will be a happy old Pitt fan.

  38. and speaking about shams …. while reading about this Rivals/247 sham when a non-existent recruit was rated as a 3-star ….. here is an excerpt from Matt Yoder from Awful Announcing:

    “To be honest, it’s amazing that this doesn’t happen more often. It seems practically impossible for these national recruiting sites to properly scout, vet and rank thousands and thousands of prospects from coast to coast”

    This last sentence really resonated with me and is why I always take ratings with a grain of salt. While the elite prospects are pretty easy to recognize, how the remaining prospects are distinguished between a 3 and 4 star, or even a 2 and 3 star is prone to a lot of subjectivity. For example, you can’t tell me that there is a world of difference between a 5.7 3-star and a 5;8 4-star or ESPN’s Top 300 and no. 301. Yet, that is how ESPN ranks its HS recruits ….. as if every year, there are exactly 300 elite recruits.

    The other big flaw is that these are 16 and 17 year olds, and are subject to rapid changes. Thus, a previously obscure prospect can really blossom in his senior year. Nobody thought of James Conner as a RB prospect until his senior year. Maurice Ffrench was unranked going into his senior year when Pitt offered, yet after his senior season, he received many other offers even though he had already committed.

    While I would never snub my nose to a 4/5 star, I would never snub my nose to a 3-star also

    1. thats why i look at % of total recruits rated 5.7 and above
      only 3 in last years class…15%

      really need about 50% to be consistently competitive based on my analysis
      Penn State had nearly 90% in their class…thats elite level (they will be playing for NC’s unless Franklin mucks things up)

      Va Tech and Miami do it every year with consistent recruiting
      those schools are the ones that Pitt is chasing

      i dont think Pitts coach is any better than those coaches
      and I dont think Pitt runs a system or scheme that provides an advantage

      so draw, draw on those but lose on recruiting
      cant be long term successful that way

    2. I met him at a coaching camp 11 years ago. Aside from being a great guy, he is one of the most knowegable coaches I’ve met and a great teacher of basketball. His personality 100% oppo Duzz. You meet him …and would follow him anywhere.

      1. I got to talk to Coach White briefly last fall. I told him that we’ve really missed having a decent post player for a long while. He said he was recruiting a couple pretty hard. Sure enough in a couple months he signed a couple of promising sounding 6-3ish recruits and then brought in a 6-4 transfer…

  47. with way things are today, there may be some good talent available in another month, There will be some firings and/or job changes that may spur some transfer — both grad and undergrad.

    Pitt has room for 3 or 4 more recruits …. hopefully one of them is a decent tall grad transfer. This serves 2 purposes; it provides frontcourt experience as well as opening another schollie for the following year when Ellison and Chukwuka will also be leaving

  51. This is great news indeed, re Coulibaly! Great interview on PGH Sports on Wednesday about Karim, but one thing that stuck out, besides his style of play and the fact that he is a true big man, is that he is apparently a good shooter. So now with Drumgoole and Coulibably, you have 2 guys that fill positions of need, but you also have 2 good shooters coming aboard, and to me this is a sight for sore eyes. I would love to see one more big added, Diallo would be nice if Capel likes him, however I’d be very disappointed if we added the JUCO, Sy. I think more importantly than another big would be another shooter or two, hopefully the twins fit that mold, I just don’t know a lot about them…

          1. your wrong on your implications, one referring to ESPN to support Drumgoole being “unrated”- he is not unrated – and the other obviously implying that Pitt finishing in/near a top 10 class is not realistic. Not sure what you meant, but that’s obviously what you implied. I’m with you on the Top 10 thing, that seems crazy, but look below, the class is nowhere close to over, we need to be patient, and a top 10 class is not unrealistic at all. Using the ESPN site to imply Drumgoole is “unrated” is either lazy or crazy.

  62. N’Dir is gone (according to link below) as is Wilson-Frame. As noted above Ellison is captain but my guess is that George is gone. That’s 3 goners for sure plus there are 3 open slots right now (only 10 schollies are being used right now). Davis and Chukwuka are also possibilities but unless we bring in more than 6, there is no reason for them to leave.

    So with the 2 additions, I see 4 open schollies right now (and if needed, 1 or 2 more)

      And Sidy has really blossomed this season – early in the season he just seemed like someone to play as a last resort when others were in foul trouble or pooped out, but now he looks like a pretty valuable player…

  63. Pitt beat Duke this evening. In wrestling. Close dual. Duke is pretty decent. They have 4 brothers from Colorado – all starters, all good.

    Pitt is improving. They have an unfortunate season ending injury a few weeks ago at 165 creating a hole. Recruiting will need to be solid this year.

    1. Did Robert Lee get injured too last night at 149? He gave up 6 points with a Medical Forfeit – I can’t find any news, which tells me he may be back – I won’t speculate in case it is serious.

      1. EE – yes. I tuned in right as Lee got injured. We are thin at a couple of weight classes for sure as a result of injuries. Demetrius Thomas came through with a Tech Fall at the end to win the dual meet.

      Get this: “The Panthers had 15 walks in total, with freshman Sky Duff walking four times.”

      I hope we have some more games with Nova! 🙂

      1. Good start for the new coach. Over on the softball side with two more losses, one to Nebraska and one to Wisconsin – both bad (0-8 and 1-6). Tough start at 1-6 for the new softball coach. Next up, Nebraska and Wisconsin again this weekend.

          1. They had two very good starters – one graduated and one returned.

            Former HC Aprile (sp) had received a commitment to Pitt for a top pitcher from the mid-west. That pitcher never attended class at Pitt and went elsewhere. Probably followed our former coach to Louisville.

  68. Did you ever come across one of those pamphlets or magazines rating the regions restaurants? You know the ones, “The Best Places to Eat” pamphlets? You know how those ratings come about don’t you? Often times the “judge” calls around the area to eateries in which they want to cover and ask for a donation to get that particular establishment names in the book. If they get paid, they slap the restaurants name right in the book without ever seeing or eating in it.

  76. Pitt baseball got clobbered today by Iowa 1-10. The Panthers with 3 hits – the lone run scored in the 8th inning.
