  1. Sorry for the late posting of the comments thread folks. Lets see if we can bring home this championship!

  2. Wake sure seems to have our running game figured out. Need to change it up. Team sounds flat (i am on radio…game is black out but trying to work around that)

  3. Narduzzi is getting out coached. The offense has no answer….and I hate when Pickett rolls out for a pass. The blocking is crap today too.

I hope they’re up next week for an angry Miami team….

  4. Well, the coaching battle is one sided. Wake has thrown a little different scheme at them and they are clueless. Let’s see if they can adjust. Won’t be able to win just throwing outs and jet sweeps to get them out of box. Looks like Wkae is playing their 2 nose tackles together.

  5. According to Bostic they are picking gaps and we can overcome that with misdirection. Lets see if Watson can adjust. We really need to execute in the passing game.

  6. Pitt O looking like their first incarnation from earlier this season. Or their incarnation that appeared in the loss to Va Tech at the goal line last year.

  7. Why are we putting our nickel corner on their best reciever? 2nd time Coleman has been covering dortch. And now we are offsides. Sure is good their QB is off. Pat clearly does not have these guys ready. Well can’t say i didn’t expect it.

    Like

  8. Good thing their QB is off too or this game would be a laugher….for them that is.

Another bad offsides for a free play on 3rd down. They look like they did when they played UNC.

  9. Pitt is lucky it’s only 3-0. The are being outplayed on both sides of the ball. I don’t think our secondary can cover WF’s receivers.

  10. Maybe we should think of blocking sometime soon. Free releases into our gaps by Wake all day. Pitt needs to go all shotgun to get Wake out of this gimmick defense!

  11. Sounds like some homer refs out there. To be expected on Tobacco road. Man I hate the state of North Carolina.

14 of 18 for 147 yards. Only 58 yards rushing.

  20. Pitt had the ball for almost 21 minutes to Wakes 9 and we lead in Total Yards…205 to 151, other than that one Wake drive late in the 2nd Q, they have done little. So the game is still there to be won

  21. This is pretty much the game I expected today. No, not the low scoring game but the evenness of the game. Never expected a PITT blowout that’s for sure. So I’m discouraged with the offense but encouraged with the defense. Problem is…. PITT is down by four. Bad missed extra point.

All this being out-coached crap is plain silly and as I read and identify where the comments come from I’m never surprised. I would say my biggest disappointment so far in this game are the crappy uniforms. They suck.

It’s a 4 quarter game so I’ll wait before I start back with all the…….. “THIS TEAM SUCKS/NARDUZZI SUCKS TALK”.

PITT has twice as much clock possession and more yardage than WF. Let’s be real here. Oh yeah the score is real and not so good. So wring your fingers in anguish and think the worst… ike

    1. yes but to the point of my post two days ago, we are completely beating ourselves today. Erase those penalties and the miscues and we are in the lead here, or at the very least tied, 10-10;

Only saw bits and pieces of the football game – no one killed Kenny, in fact he killed the Deacon’s. This team is peaking at the right time, kudo’s to the kids and coaches. Nice to see a multi dimension offenses, excited to watch the replay later on.

Maybe, but it’s part of what makes tradition, too. Pitt is the only new addiction to the ACC that is a historically powerful, legendary team. ‘Cuse. too, to some extent. Pitt in particular will have to earn respect. It will come.

One back, then another, then two—one you never heard of, then two more, then KP and the fly paper hands bunch. That’s a program. That’s a team. That builds a future. Every one of the last 4 wins was the real deal. Different puzzle pieces each time, leaving us with extra pieces. I do want Hall to hit 1000, and how cool that Q passed Elliot Walker! But a winning team has more pieces than it needs, and can win more ways than one or two….

Only one poster today swore at a Pitt player, thereby earning himself one of his two allowed strikes, and then did not recognize when the kid had by far his best game of the year. 1. What pisses me off is, without that bogus holding call on Pitt on Q’s TD run the play or 2 before, Morrissey doesn’t get hold. They are more repercussions to bad calls than just the call itself. And Morrissey is a victim of that. Heather and Pitt need to get on the ACC’s case.

  122. Ike,

I am one of those who thought that this team was not going to win more than 5 games. I posted repeatedly my prognostication to make sure that I “owned” it.

I haven’t been posting much here lately because I have been busy, but I wanted to come up here and say several things.

    1) I was way off and am happy to admit it. And really early on it did not look good but I will give my props to Nardog for keeping this team together and believing in him and more importantly each other.

    2) I am extremely happy with them winning the coastal. But I am more happy on how they won today. There were two points that made me happy.

    A) They came back and dominated in the 2nd half. It wasn’t too long ago were Pitt couldn’t do a thing in the 2nd half. To come out trailing and completely own the 2nd half shows how far this team has grown.

    B) It was on KP’s arm and head that this win happened. That shows growth in both him and the rest of the offense.

    3) Looking back, ( you knew I wouldn’t be completely positive here didn’t you? 😉 ) I just wish they would’ve had one signature win. The one I think that could’ve been was the one against Notre Dame. Man how I wish Pitt would’ve pulled that one out in South Bend to boot.

Finally, I will root for this team to pull a repeat against Clemson from a few years ago. I don’t think that will happen because Clemson won’t be overlooking us and they have playoff implications. Just because I think they will get trounced doesn’t mean that I won’t root for them with all of my heart. I just think it’s a bridge too far.

However, as I “owned” my now seemingly ridiculous 5-7 prognostication, I will happily have my crow “Sushi style” if somehow, someway the Panthers pull out the upset of the ages against Clemson. But I for one, am just super happy they are there and have a shot.

oh and one final note…I hope that Coach Narddog will be able to take advantage of this late surge to improve what has been a pretty disappointing recruiting season thus far (IMHO).

    Like

    1. Now Dave just what insight do you have on this years recruiting class that makes you skeptical of its merits? Bookser posted several weeks ago that Pitt’s scout team was the best he’d seen since at Pitt. So just maybe Narduzzi’s much maligned recruiting classes previous to this season are not what many posting here made them out to being subpar.

      Like

    2. I to hope Pitt can take advantage of it since they have zero to maybe just one 4 star depending on the recruiting service.

They already have 16 recruits with only 6 slots to fill. I always look at Rivals and the avg star. Right now they are sitting at #52 in rankings. I then compare them to teams in the division and we trail Va Tech and Miami. So that tells me that those teams will get better through recruiting alone if Pitt doesnt step up their game.

Pitt needs 4-5 four stars each year and a coaching staff that knows how to develop and properly use players.

You need about 3 impact players on both sides of the ball. Maybe Kenny, Mack and French are those on offense. Pitt loses 2 stud backs and the best FB in college. Those will be tough to replace along with 4 very experienced players on the line.

On D, I dont see any LB’s or DB’s that can take over a game or shut players down. There might be 1-2 impact players on the line though but the D needs more playmakers.

In college, you reload and not rebuild. I see it as a rebullding year on offense or at least a transition to more of a passing oriented scheme. On D, I think it shows improvement like this year but I dont see it dominating.

I agree with Annie and some others about posters taking pot shots at posters instead of a registering a civil disagreement with a post. I don’t post a lot because to me at least it seems that some POV posters question the validity of an infrequent poster’s comments because the poster is a newbie whose opinion conflicts with theirs.

It is hard for an infrequent poster like me, and maybe others, to get skewered on here by a poster who says he or she is only poking fun and someone like me should toughen up or get a thicker skin or grow a couple. I love Pitt football as I think nearly everybody who posts on here does. I don’t like squabbles over something as important to me as Pitt’s success, which shouldn’t conflict with any Pitt fan’s desire for such success. I hope that my comments here don’t result in any squabbles. I am just trying to be honest–and civil–with my comments. Hail to Pitt!

Even our most optimistic Optimisto was pessimistic coming out of the UCF game. Please, Justin and all other readers of the POV put your two cents because being a frequent poster does not in and of itself mean squat about your knowledge of Pitt football. The ACC is now faced with the same yearly problem again. Can a low ranked team beat the Clemson Tigers and ruin the ACC chances for a team in the CFP?

ESPN consistently ranks the ACC and the Coastal Division as the lowest FB group. It is all about the ratings?

Big plays made the difference and turned the game in our favor. First was Hamlin’s INT, second was
“the Catch” by Ffrench. I hate to think what would have happened had we gone down by another TD.
The D made lots of stops aided by their inaccurate QB. The O picked up lots of first downs, tough ones by Ollie and solid throws by KP. Our pass protection was the best all year. Give credit to Watson for the game plan, and the kids for the execution. Lots of big plays in the second half made the game look easier than it was.

I think even Ike would agree that things were looking pretty dire after the UNC game. Best improvement in a team mid season that I can remember.

Pitt will win in Miami…..and move up into the Top 20 in both polls.

In addition to the wins in football and volleyball, Pitt wrestling beat the No. 14 team in the country yesterday. Pitt is not currently ranked, but will be soon. Pitt wrestling faces a gauntlet of 10 ranked squads out of 16 total dual meets… Things are improving on the mat (though it will take some time). We will be back sooner than I expected though.

I thought that Pitt’s receivers did well with the runs after the catch – Tipton and Mack stood out. That was good to see.

We earned a couple of extra games which is nice. We will face three athletic teams in Miami, Clemson and whoever we get in the bowl. This will be a tough stretch of ‘road’ games for sure, but something to look forward to.

  136. Kenny Picket continues to make progress. Was really impressed yesterday by the TD throw to Ra-Ra.

KP displayed great touch and timing on that throw. So now we’ve seen KP hit the deep ball, the deep slant over the middle, and the touch-type pass…

Still work to do on shorter passes to place the ball where his receivers can run after catch, but KP definitely moving up nicely on the learning curve…

    Go Pitt.

    1. Watched the replay of The Game and Mad Bomber 2.0 completed a couple passes along the sideline, one to Mack on a pretty deep out and one to Q, that they ruled both out of bounds. Do remember seeing a replay of the Q catch and they said he never had control, don’t remember a replay of the Mack catch.

Bomber was throwing the ball with much more authority and confidence. Some of those he really winged into bullet territory.

      1. Seems like KP needs to work some on anticipating the break so he can get the ball there a tad sooner — especially on those sideline throws.

Would still like to see some screen passes – and with his speed, why not some wheel routes to Hall??

        Go Pitt.

  140. ^^ Emel, we both know the answer to your last question. Myself, I was at our grand-kids birthday party and spent the day with all six of our grand-kids. A great day after a great win.

BUT!! Another week of PITT having to win a game. Losing to Miami is not an option. After that and with the honor of playing Clemson is an opportunity that could throw PITT over the top or drag them straight back down. Will there ever be a time when we trust PITT to be a good team and give the credit they deserve and yes, I’m talking about myself as well as anyone else? I think this PITT team is really good. .. …. …ike

    1. Well if you want a top flight football program, you gotta win EVERY week. And yep….losing is not an option.

And winning every week, gets you into the Top 25 and keeps you there. And when we do that, recruiting will get much better.

Who knows Pitt might shock the nation, as it did with 13-9.

  141. How difficult will it be to score a couple of ACC Championship game tix for a non-season ticket holder through the ticket office? Do you think our allocation may not reach that far down?

    Like

    1. That’s a good question OhHow. I was looking at that myself last night. They prefer you buy them off Pitt, but if you’re not a season ticket holder, you’re not assured squat. Except a nose-bleed seat, maybe.

I’m going to try and score some Club Level tickets where u have access to the inner bars/restaurants,
as well as having a outside seat.

Now how I get em, is another story.

Pitt has trailed in four of its past five victories, three of those in the second half.

  143. What happens if PITT can beat Miami? Narduzzi wins 8 regular season games in 3 of his 4 years at PITT.

Got to say… I maintain that I have never been the big Narduzzi fan that everyone thought I was or am. I just wanted to give the coach a honest chance and see what happens. Much like I did with Heather, Stallings and Barnes. Proving sometimes patience can pay off and sometimes it doesn’t. Making changes just for the sake of it may work in the NHL but generally speaking not so much in life over-all. Continuity and not so much variety is the real spice of life. Yeah, it may get mundane at times but when you put your arms around 8 wins seasons at night…. it can feel pretty sweet. 🙂

  144. Reed was right when he said that you have to have some stars to have a good, winning team. I think we are seeing some star power emerge.

Certainly Ollison and Hall have raised their games. Aston is certainly a difference maker. But Ffrench is maybe the most dynamic playmaker. and Carter looks like a Star in the making. And Mack has shown he can make plays… I suspect Tipton is going to finally emerge, too.

On defense, there’s Weaver. Reynolds looks like he will be a playmaker as he gains experience. Jones can make plays (and hopefully minimize the mistakes). The DTs are at a minimum solid; I think the DBs, while not superstars, are pretty good.

Then on special teams, Kessman is way above average; and the Aussie punter might be as well…

We need a few more “stars,” but we do have some and they are surrounded by some good depth. So perhaps it’s not all as bleak as it may have appeared 6 weeks ago…

    Go Pitt.

Which brings up the point that players reach the “totally gets it!” stage of their careers at different points – and of course some never reach it.

We might tend to write players off when they don’t “Star” by their sophomore year. But Coach Duzz is obviously a coach who likes to work the experience angle…

Would the team be better off if Pitt played the backups to Briggs, Zeise, and Roy this season? Perhaps.

Would Pitt have been better to play the backups to Herndon, Millin, and Dintino? I’d say a definite no.

Furthermore, all the guys named above helped Pitt win the Coastal Division…

  147. Ike – Before the season I felt that Duzz had to win 8 games (at minimum) in year 4 on the job … and I thought that he had a shot to do it, despite the detractors. He’ll have at least 3 more chances to get it so no excuses on that one additional win. Got to go get it. H2P.

I said that because the program had to show progress and prove to fans that it was turning a corner. I see that … now. I lost a little faith after UNC (okay, a lot of faith) but I’m glad Duzz stayed the course.

I thought i saw “it” before the season but quickly began seeing what the detractors saw … Forgive my Father for I have sinned … I’m back now though. Haha.

I feel like the turning point was Tyler Sear leaving the program. Sounds like he didn’t like the TE’s role (blocking) in the offense. If you’re not bought in, you’re going to struggle. They replaced him with players who were bought in and the running game has been clicking ever sense.

The next game was ND, where Pitt competed harder than they had all season … then quickly followed it up with 4 straight dubs …

Kind of funny how things work out.

I do have concerns about replacing at least 4/5 on the OL next season but college football is about change and there are ton of OL on the team that will be in the system for 3 years now (2 under Borberly).

If they can replace the OL, the team has a chance to be special next season.

    1. Totally agree with your assessment on Sear! He wanted to be a receiver not a blocker. We now have basically six offensive linemen although apparently catching laterals is part of their job description.

  148. Interesting thought about Sears, but I have a different take. I think that in the last 4 games we played teams who did not have the outstanding type of pass rushers we had been seeing. Yes, Syracuse has a pretty good pass rush.

But in Duke, UVA, VT, and WF, we were more evenly matched in talent, or we had the edge.

I’m afraid that in the next two games, perhaps next 3 games, that will not be the case. KP may be back to having no pocket and running for his life or doing those ineffective roll-outs…

I have great respect for Bookser, making the move to tackle, while he is clearly better (and dominant) at guard, and giving his all for the team. I hope he, and Millin, can handle the DEs they’re going to see the next two weeks… 👍

    Go Pitt.

The Steelers drafted Joe Greene my freshman year, Pitt stunk then, so Sunday Steeler parties became a big deal. Dorsett came my first year of grad school and Saturdays got a lot better.

Hopefully we are seeing another resurgence of Pitt Football. It will be a lot more difficult in this era, but who other than the coaches and players thought they would win the Coastal?

  154. I don’t think Pitt will have to replace 4/5 OL next year, not exactly.

Hargrove and van Lynn have been getting more reps each week it seems like, and doing well with those reps. I think they will both be new starters next year, but they won’t be new. I think Pitt will only have to replace 2/5 OL. Hargrove will be a starting OG, van Lynn a starting OT, Morrissey at C, and the other OT and OG spots will be the ones filled by guys with very limited or no experience.

I’ve been extremely happy to see Hargrove and van Lynn get the playing time they have and do with it what they have, it should bode well for them and for Pitt’s offense in 2019.

And many complain about Pitt’s 40,000 attended games.—Keep in mind folks they are all on either TV or via the internet. That fact going forward will keep the attendance down for almost all except for the die hard state schools and ND of course.

    1. Being a dawg to Miami is actually a good thing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m elated at the Pitt victory over W_F. With miami’s talent, the canes should be favored. And as my friend Jay91 put it this weekend, Pitt still has work to do to prove they are a “better than average” team.

The UCF and psuX games really did happen and Pitt traditionally does not play well in Florida.

That being said, I think the underdog position trumps the poll rankings. These players and coaches need to focus on one game at a time and win. Enjoy the moment but move on to the business at hand.

Go 1-0 this Thanksgiving weekend, solidify our ranking in the polls for the ACC championship and we’ll be a BIG dawg the following week.

The W_F stadium, weather and campus were FANtastic. Great trip for the history books – the rides were long, but the win and experiences made it all worth it.

      Crush the canes!

  158. Re: Wake’s attendance, and for those that like to complain about attendance and say we can’t compete with the big 10 schools of whatever because of our attendance figures, look at Washington State — currently sitting at #7 in the polls. Their stadium only holds about 34,000 people, yet they are finding ways to win and even get themselves into playoff consideration.

Washington State’s program has always fascinated me for other reasons … I think they have had like 4 or 5 ten wins seasons over the last quarter century, and 2 rose bowl appearances. On the flip side, they have also had some awful 1 or 2 win seasons over that span. But I honestly think I might trade that for the mediocrity that Pitt has had for the last 25 years. We’ve only had 1 ten win season, one Fiesta Bowl appearance in that same period.

  159. You all have to remember that Pitt is not the greatest example of SOP …. Miami is. Yes, being a Pitt fan is cause to have your den remodeled with rubber walls, but you all would be in straight jackets now if Miami was your team.

Last year they cruised past everyone until the last regular season game and then went into the tank — it was only a matter of when. This year, they were ranked pre-season in the Top 10.

The big difference is that Miami gets recruits that we would relish. They have plenty of 4 and 5 stars on the roster as So Florida may be the most talent rich area in the US. They also pay their HC nearly $5M. There is no excuse for this team to continually be so pathetic with one head-scratching performance after another.

Who knows what Miami team shows up on Saturday. You would think they would be out for revenge because of last year … but you never know.
