^^^ Is it me or are Fran’s tailgates pulling in some seriously attractive women?

Have at it Pitt fans…

I’ll watch the game on recording late tonight as the family is treating me to dinner and a play this evening for my B-Day.  You guys bring home a win and I’ll not peek at the score.

Hard to call this one but I think Pitt will dip a bit and get beaten 35-27…or maybe not because we are playing well lately.

What’s yours?

  1. Happy Birthday Reed

I firmly believe UVa has emerged as the best team in the Coastal UVa 27 Pitt 20

But then again … I thought last week’s game was going to end something like 14-10 or 20-14 .. so what do I know

  2. Happy birthday Reed. Thanks for creating this fun, informative and entertaining forum.

Pitt wins a nail biter 28-27 on national TV to take over sole possession of 1st place of the ACC Coastal.

The D holds the cavs to one score per qtr and trueFR Devin Danielson blocks an extra point (ala AD at GT) to be the difference maker Pitt needs to get the W.

And lastly, I predict my wife and I will be drenched in Charlottesville when the final gun sounds in this Pitt victory.

  3. Last week’s great finish makes this one the key to the season.

I have no idea whether I should use psych or reverse or double reverse or flea flicker in prediction this week, so will predict later, or never as this team is really tough to read outside of huge effort and heart and tiny, weak results on defense.

Ah, what the h, let’s say 35-28 where the Who’s in Hoo ville have their heart ripped out by the ever strengthening Pitt Panthers.

Happy birthday Reed!!! Thanks for all you do here and elsewhere.

  4. I’m thinking 35 points might be low for the Cavs tonight. We truly suck on defense (and our passing ain’t so hot either but did show up last week):

    Total Offense 93rd 374.3

    Passing Offense 120th 146.4

    Team Passing Efficiency 103rd 119.67

    Total Defense 99th 436.0

    Rushing Defense 97th 185.5

    Passing Yards Allowed 93rd 250.5

Team Passing Efficiency Defense 93rd 142.46

    Scoring Defense 98th 32.6

We are getting pretty close to 2016’s crappy 35 ppg allowed that season.

  5. This is one I had as a loss. Think the team that gets out first will win, maybe going away. To further complicate our problems it’s really the only major game on tonight, and we do struggle for the most part in prime time. Weather reminds me of the PSU disaster, 41-24, them.

good special teams and field position
Bend but not break D…dont give up big plays, hold them to field goals

If all that happens, Pitt wins 31 to 19
If not, Pitt loses 27 to 21

  7. Oh, who the hell knows with this team?!

Worst case scenario? The defense continues to play like, well our defense. The run game falters and Pickett reverts to throwing to the check down on every drop back. Cavs win 35-17.

Best case? The run game stays physical and effective. Pickett hits some shots deep. Our defense plays like, well our defense (there’s not much hope there, fellas.) Pitt holds on 42-38.

Likely scenario? I will be watching from my cabin, doing my best to keep the Kentucky distilleries in business.

  8. Offense is obviously the key. Are Ollison, FFrench and Carter ready to go? We are going to have to score early and often for a repeat of Duke or Syracuse. The defense needs to contribute some more timely tackles with a couple turnovers. That being said, I don’t have a clue regarding outcome.

Happy Birthday Reed, didn’t think you would make it to 63 did you? I know how you love plays and all, have a great night. btw, sitting in a theater with your back situation is a good sign. Hope you are progressing well. Maybe a trip to Pittsburgh for the final home game against VT? Be great to see you.

Narduzzi has finally beaten everyone down so far that no one mentions the injuries to Ollison and Ffrench. Will they play and or are they fully recovered? Speaking of injuries to running backs PN did say that Carter is banged up and may not play.

Is this the every other week of Kessman’s kicking where he is off. PITT cannot afford for him to miss the make-able kicks like he did at ND.

Another game in the rain, omg, Hope KP puts a glove on his throwing hand. Has anyone ever put one of those gloves on? A football sticks like glue. Explains some of the catches we see now a days.

PITT’s offensive line is really coming together in their run blocking. I suspect they will continue to pound the ball with the occasional downfield heave Pickett was successful last week. PITT will have to keep the Virginia QB in check with his running abilities. If they can spy on him and hold him down PITT may pull this one out.

  16. Since a Pitt win tonight would literally be too good to be true – and since I have been long conditioned not to expect good things from Pitt in these situations — as a long-suffering Pitt fan I must predict a defeat.

On the practical side, I worry about our blockers dealing with UVA’s 3-4 front – especially with a short week to prepare. I can see us suffering some sacks tonight which will kill drives.

My wild guess is we lose 27 to 20.

But I hope Erie Express’ team wins!

If we are going to win this one, I think it’ll need to be a game where we score quite a bit more than normal (ala the Duke game, and their hideous helmet logo), or maybe get turnovers in bad weather.

      1. I’m not so sure we see much of Carter. Narduzzi said the jet sweeps are unlikely to work against a 3-4 defense like Virginia’s. To the extent we use Carter as a traditional running back, unless he has learned to pass block, I fear that UVA’s defense will know that every time Carter lines up in the backfield, it’s some type of running play.

Of course, I hope I’m completely wrong and he runs wild for the 2nd game in a row.

  23. Seriously, we fans are not going to see an OCS in our lifetime. It isn’t just Pitt who is the decision maker with that issue.

And since when has Pitt had a monster donor who gave a crap about athletics?

Our biggest donors ever were the Mellons, the Hillmans, Waltons and Bill Dietrich and all specified their gifts be used only for academics, research and university academic buildings. We’ll not see that happen for athletics.

Huge donors to university athletic programs are few and far between…here is a list of the 50 biggest university donations and I couldn’t find any references to big athletic gifts at all, but two to Michigan and OK state.

    1. If the Steelers move to Washington or Butler County after Heinz Field’s lifespan runs up 15-20 years from now, which I get is unlikely but nonetheless possible, then Pitt will have to think of something. I guess it could continue to rent Heinz from the Sports and Exhibition Authority, but it would probably require some level of monetary investment to make it a Pitt only facility, and the school might be better off starting from scratch and building new.

      Like

      1. the land that Heinz sits on is far too valuable for Pitt to rent it after the Steelers leave
The City will build taxable hotels, restaurants, shopping plazas and businesses on the site
Plus, Pitt would be on the hook for millions in renovations and would have to maintain it
And it would still be far too big for Pitt’s needs

Steelers will get a tax break from Butler County and they will move there
and Steeler ownership is more than just the Rooneys these days…multiple investment groups and individuals
Theres nothing sentimental about keeping the Steelers in the City limits
Its all about the dollar and will be a business decision

        Like

    2. it will take small donors…thats the key
600,000 fans at $100 per brick (theres $60M right there)
Pitt doesnt have any big whales unfortunately on the sports/business side
So Pitt needs a rain maker to gather about $100M in donations over a 5 year period…thats half Pitt’s annual ACC check each year; thats a $20 donation every year from every fan for 5 years
      so its realistic
but the other $100M will need to come from exclusive rights/marketing/contracts from corporate USA
      Again, very realistic
The remaining $200M comes from debt and future revenue streams like ticket sales, etc, etc

But can such a venue generate revenue streams 365 days per year? Tangible ROI is important
      And where would it go?

      My plan:
VA hospital site (it will be shut down in 10-15 years anyway given veteran demographics and evolving health care)
      build a multi purpose venue
incorporate office space, retail and classrooms/dorms

Pitt does need a plan when the Heinz lease expires in 12 years. Need to be proactive and smart.
Steelers will not invest money in massive renovations; they will build a new venue
However, it may be in Butler County…45 minute ride by bus for students

But Heather wont be around then. It will not be part of her legacy. She is all talk at this point and despite the feasibility study performed by Populous last year, an ‘OCS’ is not an immediate priority. But it is feasible.

Replacing two 70 year old facilities (Trees and Fitzgerald) are the immediate priorities.

Does the announcement of women’s lacrosse open Pitt up for a new men’s sport? Personally I’ve love to see a men’s ice hockey program, although if they we’re thinking that route, they would probably start a women’s hockey team rather than lacrosse. Mens lacrosse probably makes more sense if a new men’s sport is to be added.

  30. I will have a different score but the same outcome as last week. Pitt will blow out the Hoos by at least 1 point.

We are accustomed to performing in the rain and turnovers will be a big part of this game, in our favor. A new freshman star emerges for Pitt, maybe Danielson. Maybe a LB. Carter is hurt. Salhuddin is hurt.

If Watson is smart, he comes out offensively in a 5 wide set against uva 3-4. UVA will immediately have to call a timeout or risk one of their LB’s covering one of our WR’s in a mismatch. Advantage Pitt. At a minimum, we strip them of a timeout in what will be a close game. I put a WR 3 feet from each sideline to take the CB’s out of the play and open up the middle for a WR against a LB’r. Granted, the defense can use the boundary as a helper, but the idea is to open the middle of the field where you have a mismatch. Hey, it worked on the street growing up in the south hills.

Just a strategy to get the upper hand early.

Pitt wins in a blowout 24-23

  31. Speed kills and as such I’m quite Pitt could incorporate Carter in plays outside of jet sweeps. He did play some wide receiver in HS and a fake jet sweep in one direction with a designed screen to either Carter or Ffrench in the other direction might have VA completely confused.

Sorry POV’ers but until the defense figures out how to handle mobile QBs especially ones that can throw a bit we will see big points put on the board against us.

Only hope is Pitt can establish a time eating, punishing running game keeping the Hoos offense on the sidelines, but I still think Pitt loses a much closer game. Eventually, its porous pass defense will doom us to another SOP loss.

Also, if the impossible happens and an OCS is ever in my lifetime under consideration, don’t put it in Oakland. The place is incredibly difficult to get to from both of Pittsburgh’s population centers (South and North) and its no fun tailgating in indoor parking lots. There is no open fields or areas in Oakland, and UPMC will make sure it stays this way till the end of time. Also, we need to accept, Pitt is a commuter school and therefore even students will have to commute.

  35. Pitt is 0-3 on the road this year. 2 close losses (ND and UNC, 5 points and 3 points, respectively) , and 1 blowout (UCF).

    Team Stats Pitt UVA
    Points Per Game 27.8 28.3
Points Allowed Per Game 32.6 18.8
    Total Yards 374.3 390.8
    Yards Passing 146.4 204.8
    Yards Rushing 227.9 186.0
    Yards Allowed 436.0 327.4
    Pass Yards Allowed 250.5 214.4
    Rush Yards Allowed 185.5 113.0

Comparatively, UVA doesn’t allow a lot of points per game and are stingy on D (-9.0). Meanwhile, we give up a ton of points per game (+ 4.3 vs UVA’s average)

Given that the average O output of UVA’s is 46 yards less than what we normally allow tells me they will likely meet their score of 28

while I believe given their ability to stop the run will reduce our effectiveness on Offense.

So I will add in one turnover that produces points from Pitt as well as not being able to throw/run will make this a UVA comfortable win

We can’t get a real 35K head count at our home games…no one but a small core of 20 – 30K Pitt fans care about Pitt football at all let alone chipping in any money at all for an OCS.

Forget about Emminent Domain in S. Oakland also. Those run down houses are gold mines for absentee landlords in renting to students and they aren’t going to be forced out.

I think Pitt missed a good chance for a stadium when they didn’t bid on the Homestead LTV site but it needs a lot of remediation work.

    Fun to talk about though…

    Like

    1. I thought the same thing and even if possible still only 60 million.

The LTV site would have been great to move all sports programs and campus expansion, but the city is happier with taxable properties.

After the failed North Side and East Liberty projects the days of Urban Re-Development are done.It has taken those areas 50 years to recover, and they are still not there yet.

The biggest hurdle after the money for the stadium, is the lack of infrastructure which would triple the size of the budget. Transportation being the biggest cost.

You have to laugh at the roads heading in and out of Oakland. Bates St from the Parkway East, Blvd of the Allies, Fifth and Forbes, Center Ave. What a nightmare! At any given time, complete gridlock.

during the conference re-alignment days, TV studies/research were performed
Pitt has roughly 600,000 fans (Fans and TV sets solidified Pitt’s ACC entry)
Pitt has over 300k alumni alone
Yes- Pitt has a core of about 25k-30k season ticket holders and another 50k-90k probably of casual fans
And Pitt is struggling with an est. $50M Victory Heights plan (mainly because football has nothing to do with it)
But if leadership begins planning now for the inevitable day when the Steelers leave Heinz, you have time on your side
My point is that the money equation is very reasonable…donations, sponsorship’s, naming rights, license fees, marketing contracts, debt, future revenue streams (i did not mention increased tuition or higher student fees or any subsidized money from the County or State because it wouldnt be needed)
      Placement is the bigger hurdle

  64. From the angle that they kept showing, it looked like Jones struck his head first. That is incorrect. Re-wound through all of the replays and he actually hit the shoulder pad first and slid up to finish hitting his head. I am not saying there was no head contact, rather, there was no TARGETING of the head. That’s why there was no flag and should not have been called. Watch all the replay angles.

Actually Galloway said that refs were looking too hard to find something, which I agree with.

  121. We did have the rain field advantage…..

The key to this game in my opinion was stopping the virginia running game and forcing them to pass. They also had a lot of offensive penalties which made it easier to defend. Their qb is a running talent but the second key was that our DL stayed in their lanes and were patient, keeping him hemmed in if you will. He took some big losses.

I do think the rain caused some of his early tosses to go high when his guys were open. Oh well, too bad.

Look, Narduzzi would have been fired if Pitt didn’t pick up the 4th and 1 at its own 10 yard line and given up a score as a result. I think Narduzzi knew early on that Pitt DL was stopping the run first and that he was convinced they couldn’t run against us. That helps decisioning (i.e. going for it).

I think the comments were mostly spot on for the time place and circumstance. For those mocking it, join in. Let’s see how you make out. We did miss a lot of tackles but made the ones that were important at the end. Narduzzi agreed with that after halftime with what many were saying on the blog. I was good with the comments.

We need to remember who the hoos are : Beat Richmond, Ohio, NC, Miami, Louisville and Duke. Lost to NCSt., Indiana and Pitt. (6-3).

Reed, happy birthday! Glad you are still on the right side of the dirt.

My prediction earlier was a Pitt blowout of 24-23. Pretty close had we not fumbled the extra point try again.

First quarter Va threw two passes for 82 yards, after that around 120.

    Borbely deserves credit somewhere here.

The much maligned O-Line deserves much credit here.

KP does not see the field well and doesn’t get his passes off in the right timing.

Turns out Hall ain’t so bad.

Turns out just maybe, Hendrix ain’t so bad.

Where oh where has little Lopes gone?

Hamlin has stepped up his game to another higher level.

PITT’s defense is helter skelter at times and solid others. Kind of Dr Jeykll/Mr Hyde.

    Narduzzi out-coached Mendenhall.

    PITT gets a road win.

BigB took the south by storm and took names doing it.

    That’s all folks . . . ike

  123. Oh and please add Georgie to that list. What a football player. Hope to see the Aston family at next weeks Fran tailgate.

  124. Watching the game again, clearly and indisputable horse collar. Had to hear how tall the kid was 6’7″ multiple times. Well his long reach came back to haunt his butt.

Virginia players rolling around in pain after plays all game made me feel good. << Is that a bit sick? The north wins again.

  125. The 6’7” kid wasn’t the one who got the horse collar, he’s 11, call was on 43 I think? Anyhow, it was blatant and turned the game.
Hey Bernie, I think I did see a WUP flag! H2P

    1. Yeah, #43. He’s the guy who got the strip sack on Pickett the play before. From the penthouse to the outhouse in one play 🙂

  126. Had a blast last night and some random comments…..

POV crew tailgate in pouring down rain. Thank God for canopy tents, GoreTex and BigB’s keg of Crown Royal. But how great to connect with the likes of Erie Express, BigB & JeannieB, Richman and a supporting cast of other diehard fans. Folks traveled from Pgh, York, New Jersey, North Carolina and just down the road in Williamsburg. My only regret was that a bunch of you others weren’t able to be there.
We sat with the parents and got great insight into Pitt’s recruiting, the assessment of the coaches and so on. Takeaways are that multiple families thought Pitt really had their act together during the recruiting process. Multiple players told me postgame that they love Narduzzi. Borbely is highly respected by his unit and they feel well-coached by the Emperor. Turns out Ming plays the nickname game too….learned some of those, which I won’t say here, but it’s clear they think he’s a good guy.
a number of you have seen the video of the team singing to all of us post-game, which was special. They heard our rendition of Sweet Caroline during the game…nice to know they enjoyed it. After the team sang, Duzz came out on the field to do a quick interview- guess the locker room was too noisy. He made a point to yell up to all of us, “I want to thank all of you guys for coming tonight. Means a lot.” Not that any of that is really a big deal in and of itself, but it’s part of the fun of traveling to see one’s team win a big road game. I highly recommend going to one if you can.
Great win for the program…already wired for next Saturday’s game….looking forward to seeing a lot of you pre-game…after last night, we probably won’t be serving breakfast fare. Looks like we may get a 330 or 7pm timeslot.

Happy BD Reed. Hope you enjoyed watching the game.

  127. Thinking Reed may be in a mesmerized mode.

Also thinking… if PITT can beat VT they could lose to Wake and not hurt them, much, jus saying

The 6’7″ Va player did not get the horse collar but the announcers called it that way.

Devin Danielson did play but I did not notice him.

Watson and Borbeley, hmm. how in the heck can a football team run the ball like PITT absent a passing attack? Now that is some Pittsburgh football right there!

JoeL, guys and gals. Happy to hear you all had such a great time at Virginia.

Walk ones, who needs them? ….. . Morrissey, Aston and Idowu.. Nuff said… ike
