   The last thing Narduzzi wants to do is play Patti if he can help it unless it’s a blowout score and he can get a snap in garbage time. But Town and George will play real snaps before Patti.

3. Walt finished his career at Stanford with a 5-6 record in ‘05 and 1-11 in ‘06 and was quickly shown the door. Stanford ( is this who our administration achieves to be academically?) has built their program and yearly can compete nationally. Maybe PITT should consult with braintrust at Stanford… “ Please show us the way…pretty please. “

4. GT’s 1,000+ yard rushing RB (short, stout kid) from a year ago was injured last week and is out for the remainder of 2018. GT’s QB, Marshall, is banged up a little, but i assume will play. He’s talented. Fast, a good decision maker, and can throw the ball.

   Reading your keys and tackling will be key for the Panther D. Discipline. If your job is to key on the QB then do it. If your job is to key on the pitch RB then do it. Get off blocks. Make the tackle. Make the tackle. Get off the field so our O can hopefully control the ball, give the D a break, and score often (so we don’t have to punt).

   GT will pass also. GT will go for it on 4th down 3 or 4 times this game as well.

   We have similar talent levels as GT over all. This is a winnable game for Pitt. Now, do I think we will win based on what I’ve observed so far? No. But, this game is winnable. We know what GT is going to do. We have the talent to slow them down enough to outscore them. Did I mention that tackling will be important?

   Also, this could be a short game given the desire of both teams to run the ball and chew clock so we MUST score when we have the (limited number of) opportunity.

   On an emotional level, it will be interesting to see if Pitt can bounce back from a lopsided loss. The coaches in particular probably expended a lot of emotional energy last Saturday into Sunday?Monday… Coming out of the gate flat will spell disaster for Pitt.

   From a strategy perspective – if Marshall is banged up, then hit him early and every chance you get. If the replacement RB is less experienced, rip at the ball every chance you get. Play the CBs that are best at fighting off the WR blocks and that can tackle. Keep a safety back, as GT will run 12 times in a row then throw the long ball.

   This is a winnable game… Just don’t bet on it.

5. Any of you “optimists” want free tickets for Saturday? Seems I can’t even give them away…

   There is no one, and I mean NO ONE, outside of some posters here that believe Pitt is headed in the right direction. I heard “give him more time”, “he needs his players” and “the OL needs time to mature.” Well, guess what folks? As more and more of Chryst’s players have left, we’ve won less. And if Narduzzi could recruit, his kids would be on the field rather than sitting behind the Chryst kids who are Still here. And, this is year four for Narduzzi— Any OL recruits in years one and two would be RS Sophomores or RS Juniors by now. Where are those kids? I’ll tell you where. Sitting behind a transfer from Kent State.

   This team is Narduzzi’s. It is a team with the worst home loss in FIFTY years! And to PeeSU, at that. It’s a team that has seen it’s record and recruiting rankings slide each year. Those are not my opinions– they are facts.

   I am truly not upset anymore. Like our team in the second half, I’ve quit. I expect us to lose many more games than we win this season. I hope I’m wrong but won’t be upset either way. Maybe the “optimists” among you will take my place and attend a few games, maybe donate a few bucks to show your support.

   Me? I’m out. There are tree stands to build, deer and ducks to hunt and lots of work around my house and cabin to spend my time.

   But hey… You “optimists” enjoy the season. I hear (from you and nobody else) that Pitt will turn it around.

6. I wouldn’t quite say “strong start” for Ollison. He’s been OK so far this year, and besides Pickett’s scrambling he was the only offensive bright spot against PSU (not saying much). I still think he goes down to easy for a bigger running back.

8. Jay – you (and others) are correct. To add to it, Pitt has been somewhere slightly above or below mediocre for 39 years now. The key for me is to not tie up any of my happiness to whether or not Pitt wins. I watch the games because they are my team, but more from a strategy perspective. I don’t hunt any more but I fish and do other things on Saturdays and then watch the games when I have time later on in the evening or the following week… Including last week’s PSU game.

   I acknowledge that you, Huff, Upitt, Tex and quite a few others have provided a big picture road map on this forum to turn this mess around. But, after 39 years, I’m not counting on big change.

   I root for the Pitt kids, analyze the game, cheer a little, attend a game every 5 years or so (I live many states away from PA). Having less invested helps me gain perspective. Apathy? Maybe. When Pitt commits to winning, then I will commit to being a more involved fan (buy shirts, attend more games, make a donation etc.)

   Anyway, what I’m saying is, I get where you are coming from.

   1. I agree. It’s setting expectations. And narduzzi was dead wrong in saying Pitt will win the Coastal.

      Given the way Pitt pays, manages sports and their general philosophy on athletics, Pitt should be able to compete for a division title every 4-5 years. Maybe win the division once a decade.

      Now some schools can compete every year like va tech and Miami. But those schools have different cultures. They want to win championships and fully support their programs. Pitt is all talk.

      Changing the culture is a long term process. And given Pitts board of trustees, I don’t see Pitt ever committing to excellence on the field. Btw, it’s committment to academics is also slipping per usnews academic rankings. Maybe the ACC isn’t a good fit for Pitt.

      Remember Pitt is near the bottom in the directors cup and has been for the past 20 years when they first started grading a schools overall sports performance. We’re basement dwellers in the ACC.

      So if the overall athletic department can breakeven and not run deficits, Pitt is happy. Our ACC check covers 17 sports while any profit pitt football has made over the past 3 years has just kept Pitt basketball above water.

      Pitt has little margin for error. If football experiences a drop in attendance and donations, they will be in real financial trouble. This will have a trickle down affect on all sports.

      Again remember that Pitts expenses have substantially increased given salary escalation. You think revenues are outpacing expenses now? All those new extensions. New coaching hires.

      Pitt cannot blow it with football since this program is supposed to help cover our Olympic sports.

      Pitt literally cannot afford to have football fail. The direction of the program is very important. Once people lose hope or if expectations aren’t being met, it’s game over.

9. Last 4 games of this series, GT is avg’g over 38 ppg. Over those same games Pitt is avg’g 28 ppg

   I just don’t see Pitt’s offense scoring enough points to win this game, unless the D somehow gets magically transformed this week and holds them below say….14 points. Or the other hope is GT makes a lot of miscues.

11. Pitt will probably need 35 points or more to win. It can be done if there are no turnovers. Keeping GT below 30 will be a challenge but can be done if Pitt controls the ball. Maybe the TEs will actually do something this game since Coach Salem is practically living on the South Side. After all, he has maybe 3 bodies to work with and it takes time…

12. Looks like we will have a dry field to play on. I think the O-line and Pickett will do a lot better this week.
    How much is hard to say but the conditions, poor footing, is not what you want with a mediocre line that has not played together much, and a QB with his third start. Hopefully, it will be enough to have a more balanced offense.

    The real key is whether we can slow down the triple option enough to stay in the game. I think Wirginis could be a difference maker. He needs to plug up the middle and get to the QB. Obviously good tackling is a must and penetration on the line of scrimmage has to happen or it will be a long day.

14. BTW… watched the replay of the FIASCO. Don’t be fooled. Offensive Line is as BAD as I warned after watching them up close at the Spring Game.

    Lack of athleticism is GLARING.

    That will prove to be a major problem when it comes to playing on faster turf against fast Defenses. As previously noted… it’s going to get UGLY.

15. A few things here:

    #1, Jay91 has got it right. When following your favorite football team or anything in life and it causes you such angst we should step away. If it’s not fun why put yourselves through all this? Kind of like me with this POV. PITT football doesn’t bother me but reading on here all the sky is falling stuff gets to me occasionally and I’ll tell you why. In order to be successful in anything in life, you have to keep your mind focused and keep moving forward. It’s just not my style to give up on myself or the team I root for. I guess it’s ok for some of you to do so but I’ll stick it out and that’s NOT being optimistic at all, it’s a way of life for me.

    #2 Heisman trophy candidate vs a true sophomore starting his second game in some of the worst conditions for a football game I’ve seen in a long time. Throw in a goofy place holder that gets hurt in an off campus scuffle along with a nervous Aussie and what do you get? 51-6 in a driving rain storm.

    #3 It’s not any affections towards Narduzzi at all with me. Reed is right as he asked the question previous article. I’m totally against starting over at this very moment, that could change in a New York minute though. The I told you so comments make me laugh though. After two games? You tell on yourselves…

    #4 I can’t believe someone who’s good at something (like golf) wouldn’t show a little more perseverance? Not pointing fingers just saying. I’m going through some awful personal stuff in my life right now and I’ve been trying to keep everyone on track. What do I say? Keep your chin up at all times and never look like were are losing.        With all due respect… wrong! Being focused on the wrong things doesn’t make you successful. Working hard doesn’t make you successful. Being “optimistic” doesn’t make you successful. Without ability and aptitude, all of the hard work and focus will simply be wasted effort.

       Let me illustrate this with an extreme example.. Let’s say Pitt signs a WR. He runs hard and fast. He’s a wizard with the playbook. He’s a great route runner. The problem? He was born without arms. He would be a terrible WR, no?

       Our OL can work hard and learn the plays and still be bad– because they don’t have the ability to beat their opponents. A running back can run as hard as he can and still get tackled– because he’s not fast enough. A coach can stay focused and work hard– two things I truly believe Narduzzi does– and still fail miserably. I don’t care how hard our players work if they shouldn’t be on a P5 roster. I don’t care how focused our coaches are if they aren’t preparing the players for victory. Life is a “net sum” experience.

       In the words of Yoda, “Do or do not. There is no try.”

       As for giving up… Keep this in perspective. My “giving up” means watching games on tv, rather than attending live, and spending hundreds of dollars. I’ll still watch on tv and root. That sounds to me like the “full support” some of you give now.

16. The guys that think the game with PSU was close at the half are wrong.
    I knew after the first quarter that it was going to be an easy PSU win.
    Both of Pitt’s lines were utterly dominated.
    PSU had all day to throw.
    Pitt had zero. 3 PSU defenders on top of Picket as soon as ball snapped.

    The physical part of the game looked like PSU was playing a 1AA team at best.

       But, they play 60 minutes (at least PSU did). And after 60 minutes, it was CLEAR that PSU has better players and better coaches.

       If anyone here tries to explain away a FORTY FIVE POINT LOSS.. you are suffering from delusions and should seek immediate medical treatment for the protection of yourself and those around you.

          So Yeah 7-6 is close but that didn’t tell the story out on the field. Watch the game again if you recorded it…

    2. Ike yes the game was close at the half. But I believe I saw the same with respect to our offensive line very early in the game. We were losing the battle on almost every play and as a result the Pickett passing game(if you call it that) was null and void from the onset. Yes we did break a few decent runs much like Hall broke a few decent runs last season. But in the end losing the battle on the line of scrimmage very rarely ends up with your team winning the game. It’s like a time bomb waiting to go off at any moment. And boy it really went off in the second half.

Yeah, I would say any aspirations of him playing wide receiver went out the window the second he was delivered. This young boy is challenged from the get go, is he going to give up? Or is he going to learn how to use his prosthetic limbs?

    I’ve seen great artists painting with their feet Jay. I’ve seen all kind of examples of people not giving up which btw, I was talking about you in paragraph #4.     Our receivers are averaging 8.6 yards per completion – our opponents 13.4

    Pickett is averaging 5.2 ypa and 8.3 ypc – worse than any Pitt QB in a long time (season is early yet but that’s scary).

    We have 5 punt returns for (-)3 yards. Our opponents have 2 for 38 yards. On the flip side we have 5 KO returns for 132 yards and our opponents have 4 for 94.

24. I just looked at the drive chart since I missed most of the game. The D only gave up three TD’s through the 3rd quarter and had there share of stops. I think they died of exhaustion after the punt return. The offense couldn’t give them any breaks in the 2nd half. Pitt’s 2nd half possessions consisted of 3, 1, 3, 3, 3, 5, 4, 7 yard drives. The is both comical and sad.

    1. That’s what 8 in the box will do when you can’t give your QB at least 2.5 seconds to drop back and throw. The OL crumbled on almost every pass play so PSU stacked against the run and we then couldn’t even do that.

    Pitt – 2.93

    Va Tech and Miami are consistently the best schools in the division at recruiting. They get 4-8 four star recruits each year and the occasional 5 star. Those schools have also won the division the most times.

    Pitt recruits on par with every other school in the division. Pitt’s avg is 2.78 stars this year…similar to Virginia, the perennial basement dweller. Pitts recruiting trend is down.

    Pitt will be hard pressed to win the division in most years unless it improves recruiting or can coach up these 2 and 3 stars. Pitt really needs to average a 3.3 to be successful in this division. That means 4-6 four stars every year.

    btw – schools like UCF and cincy have averaged around a 2.6 in a conference where the avg star is 2.2

          Pitt has 2 two stars this year. Last year Pitt had zero two stars and 1 four star
          The quality of 3 star recruits this year is also down if you look at the avg and offer list
          Pitt has rarely even approached 3.2 stars even in years where Pitt did get a couple of four stars (Wanny era). But remember, Pitt was in a weaker conference and competing against UConn, Rutgers and Cincy that had few if any elite recruits.
          Pitt has never approached the quality of Miami’s recruiting which explains why Pitt gets 1 win per decade against that school

30. Just watched some GT highlights…

    GT’s Marshall knows when to pitch and when to run. And, they’ve got a few counter type plays where two of the O linemen go the opposite way of the play initially then Marshall spins and heads that direction with two big blockers and lots of real estate.

    On the pitch plays, I’m assuming our D-ends will be responsible for the QB and the OLB (and CB) for the pitch man. The D-end will need help from the MLB and Safety with Marshall’s speed and quickness.

    If we can guess correctly, run blitzing could be effective at making Marshall make his decision to pitch or keep earlier. Then the rest of the D can attack the runner.

    1. He was redshirted last year. Get the kid on the field for some snaps, sure the offense could use some more playmakers. Put him in the slot, run some slot reverses with him. Line him up in the backfield, pre-snap, then motion him out….with the idea of getting him in some open space.

       Just get him on the field, perhaps he is a kid that plays much better when the Game Lights go on.

34. I think we need to define what “failure” is concerning the Pitt football program. I seem to recall that it was 1951 or 52 when Ralph Kiner wanted a big Pirates contract. The tight fisted Pirates were in last place and told Kiner to take a hike, Branch Rickey saying “we can finish last without you”. If Pitt can spend no money and finish last in the ACC, but still pick up a $30 million check each year, who are we to judge??

       But this ACC check is welfare or charity for conference schools particularly those that just want to scrape by
       Hence, there is little incentive for Pitt to truly care and work hard at winning

       Florida State and Clemson view the ACC cash as beer money
       Pitt views it as an annual salary

35. Incredible that Brightwell is behind Zeise. I have no idea how Pitt continues to find these bone-headed coaches who don’t play the best players. Brightwell and Pine should be the two starting OLBs with McKee getting some snaps.

    More snaps for Hargrove and Ford at guard, or Houy at tackle with Bookser back to right guard.

37. Playing the guy who doesn’t makes mistakes is nothing new … I remember someone telling me that they talked with Wannstedt once about Todd Thomas. Wannstedt said he couldn’t put a young Todd Thomas on the field, despite his talent, because he would get beat deep by not being in the right alignment or misreading keys or something like that (he might have been playing safety at the time). As it turned out, Todd Thomas ended up being a very talented and successful player for us once he got older and more experienced, albeit at linebacker.

    Paris Ford redshirted last year, so he can’t redshirt again (unless there is a medical reason).

45. Absolutely Emel, there were many drops by psu, more in the second half I think. Same as dropped punt snaps and mishandled place kicking opportunities by PITT. PITT didn’t handle the weather very well at all. PITT could and played well enough to have been leading 13-7 at halftime.

48. Pitt actually should have been leading at halftime, however, I agree with the others, if you watched closely the lines were getting dominated, and it was only a matter of time. That games over, no amount of bashing or nashing will change the result. Georgia Techs best back is out, well, so what. It’s a system offense, and that most likely means next guy up will just gash us.
    First game, low production was due to getting big lead and coasting. Second game, bad field conditions. No more excuses this time around. This is not a very good d they are going against. If they can’t put up numbers Saturday they are in huge,huge trouble.

Seems that our HC plays mind games with players and tries to coach up 2 and 3 stars and coach down 4 stars…Davis should get more PT at RB…I like Ollison a lot but he is more of a 3 yards and a cloud of dust runner. Davis has some shake and bake and is more likely to break off a long run. Still scratching my head about the 4th down call at the end of the first half. Is that the best play we had to run in that situation?

So if the recruiting is mainly getting 3 stars, then you need a HC and staff who can coach up their players where they show growth in their skills/fundamentals over their careers and run schemes to properly maximize their talents. Game day coaching and adjustments also are imperative to provide further advantages if you are playing teams with significant talent edges.

    This HC and staff woefully are lacking in these areas. There are HC’s across the country who are comfortable in their own skin and hire former HC’s as coordinators which provide solid staffs and give these head coaches a greater wealth of knowledge to better prepare their squads.

    I initially loved the hire of HCPN – but he’s in over his head. This administration needs to write a check to make him go away and allow Lyke the freedom to hit another homerun hire.

    I cannot speak for lastrow, but I can say that I’m neither a glutton for punishment nor do I live 20 minutes from the stadium. I just happen to like the entire experience of a home game weekend. I place as much value on the peripheral activities of the weekend – the tailgates, time with friends, taking in a different part of Pgh during each visit. When we win, it’s something to celebrate and we do – even if it’s a win that some others might say is not worthy of celebrating. Life is too short after all.

75. I see the top RB at GT is injured. That should be a big advantage to Pitt….NOT. They could start the back-up RB from Atlanta Central High School and Narduzzi still will not be able to stop this offense.

    GT will score and eat clock. I see them putting up at least 28 points. The only hope is that their defense is pretty bad also. So if by some chance we have the ball last and the score is tied, we might win 31-28 on a last second FG (hey there is precedence for this against GT) . But more likely I see the offense struggling again and GT winning 35-14.

    Please , next time, don’t hire someone who is supposedly a “guru” coordinator. Hackett, Chryst, Narduzzi….all supposed guru’s. What a false bill of goods we got sold.

76. Having an OCS does not help attendance when you look at those numbers. There are teams on there in warmer climates with OCS that have crap numbers. If I could sit and watch a football game on a 50 degree December afternoon with an 0 – 8 team I would. Not so much when it is 30 degrees or below, LOL.

    Pitt needs to rethink how the sell and market tickets. If the lower bowl was filled and parts of the upper bowl
    tarped it would increase the atmosphere immensely. You would think with computers you could make adjustments to fill in empty seats.

I know plenty of people have season tickets in the upper deck, maybe Pitt should limit sales up there to only the lower 10-15 rows and only offer single game tickets on that area and the lower bowl. Don’t know if it would help, but at least visually it keeps the attendees bunched together instead of spread all over the upper deck.

       2. Larry – the cost to do that would be cheap as well. Instead of tarping it entirely, they could use “section closed” chains/ropes connected to the railings. Easy to set-up and breakdown and could be stored in the upper deck concourses.

          An issue with tarping is the setup and breakdown on the occasions (half a dozen/yr?) when there are back to back Pitt and Steeler games. And where would one store those things?

          Having said the above, I’m sure some folks who sit up there like being able to go up high to get out of the sun/rain.

79. I’m posing this strictly as a question. PITT plays GT @ 12:30 Saturday and the Steelers play at 1:00 Sunday. Would that be enough time to remove the tarp and what kind of extra manpower would be required to put the tarp on and take it of? Now I’m pretty sure this is a union job (over-time) and it may not be cost effective considering it is not a priority for PITT in the first place.

80. There are all kinds of creative things you could do, however, one of the major problems can never be solved. This is a pro football venue with comfortable individual seats. Yellow seats! If a group of 4-6 people don’t show you notice it. In most college settings there are bleacher, people just slide over and have more room. Nowhere near as noticeable. The stadium is built on the cheap, that’s unfortunate but true. Now that the ?North Shore is built up I wonder where the Steelers new field will go in 15 years? I always thought the Rooney’s would never leave the North side, but the longer it gets from the Old man, the less likely that continues. Will they then try to pawn off Heinz to Pitt? If not, where will we play? Will we still play? Long term strategic planning? Just askin.

83. When thinking about the Pitt football program, I have a theory and wonder what the POV community thinks: Heather extended Narduzzi’s contract with a purpose. Pitt has no stomach to go FB coach searching for a long while as they spend time and money to upgrade the other sports to compete in the ACC. (in fact, they took advantage of the 5-7 season to get him under contract with a very low future buy out as the contract winds down.) Thus, Pitt’s extension of Narduzzi was not an endorsement of Narduzzi’s current or future performance, but a recognition that the unexpected Stallings buy out timing and cost is still hanging over them while they have other issues to address. I believe that Pitt will keep Narduzzi for most or all of his contract, even if football is a perennial bottom dweller in the ACC, to avoid the effort and cost of a search for a new coach. Maybe ike or Reed have some inside intel on this. If so, what say you?

85. Pittman, I just think they need to cash a few ACC checks to get their heads above water. These checks will keep coming even if FB is a bottom dweller for a few years. I don’t know if nationally televised games such as Pitt/Pedo bring in additional money beyond the ACC check, but with the beat downs like this game I doubt the networks will rush to schedule Pitt.

    1. Progress is slowly being made with Olympic sports. The new coaching hires are already making an impact.

       But among ACC schools, only Ga Tech and BC had worse overall sports programs last year. Per directors cup rankings.

       And Pitt academically is only significantly better than Louisville in the ACC. Per USNews. Pitt does rank better in WSJ.

       What schools would replace Pitt though. Cincy, wvcc, UConn, UCF? I think those schools would be fine additions if we move to a 20 team conference.

89. Of course the Offensive Line had a couple of moments in the first half. BIG plays where Watson made the right call catching Penn State off balance and the Players executed.

    But starting with the very FIRST Offensive Series for Pitt, there were more times when Pitt’s O-Line was rendered ineffective and worse totally ABUSED.

    Go back and watch… particularly the Guards. On one play you’ll see #66 Herndon get STEAMROLLED while trying to block a Penn State Defender head on along the line of scrimmage. Then there’s #76 Dintino at times looking totally lost in space… his own.

    Personally, don’t think Heather made the decision without some persuasion from CLUELESS Gallagher, possibly Juhl and the other Usual Suspects.

    Narduzzi has had Gallagher and Juhl completely fooled since the day he walked into the office asking for the job. Remember, Narduzzi was NOT one of the names recommended as a result of the search.

Pittsburgh is the 23rd largest TV market, and is in the 6th most populous state…The only way Pitt ever leaves the ACC is if Pitt decides to buy its way out and that is not happening for the same reason HCPN has zero chance of being fired in the next 2 or 3 years. ASU May be willing to throw double digit millions out the window for the football team, I don’t ever see Pitt doing so, nor should they.

101. Look Pitt is in a tough spot in interest with the casual fan especially that bomb that hit the program Saturday.

     Decisions have to be made on improving the program as the performance dictates interest. Narduzzi is not a marketing coach and that is a problem. Majors sold him and the program and even then many games were not packed. The facts are Pitt is not a sleeping giant in football. With the WPIAL in decline, the prospects are not nearly as favorable. However the athletic department as a whole is upgrading across the board and PItt BB is the sleeping giant as to local sports and interest.

     But the ACC cash and better decisions at least give hope that Pitt can turn some corner here. Look around college football and the attendance is declining with rare exception. Pitt has to be realistic here. Pitt football is not a front burner event in Pittsburgh. . Build the 45K OCS or work out a deal with Carnegie Mellon to utilize that space.

           1. At some point Heinz will either be refurbished or replaced. It is now year 18 and just how long will Heinz be around? So why not be proactive here and build a OCS and keep cost around 300 million. Now the usage is the usage but looking at the math, selling one time BitPCS for a range of 1K to 3K for say 30K seats brings in 60 million. So either you have a fund for up keep and debt service or lower the cost of investment. Pitt pays 1 million for Heinz. Great deal. But don;t you think the optics is a killer. Supply demand is now far better and with ancillary revenue food, merchandise can also add needed revenue. You also have corporate boxes, and say an increase of 50% in ticket pricing for a new and improved Pitt owned stadium and you have at least the way to do this and not really impact cash flow on a yearly basis.

103. Pitt is still trying to find the money for Stallings. Pitt will not eat an even larger buyout. Pitt will do nothing unless it gets so bad that ticket holders don’t renew.

     I think if paid attendance drops to 30k, Pitt will be forced to make a change because at that point their overall athletic department is probably running a deficit.

     But that doesn’t mean that Pitt won’t make staff and tactical changes. I would get rid of both coordinators. I would bring in new recruiters and a new philosophy.

     Narduzzi won’t have the final say with staff hires. Narduzzi will have little to do with recruiting. If he doesn’t like it, he can leave.

     1. I think only 4 or less win seasons will force Pitt to make a change. At that point, Pitt will be lucky to have 30k paid tickets and will probably only get 20k actual butts in the seats.

        The ACC money gives them a cushion. But just think what more Pitt could do if the football program generated a nice profit.

        Pitt needs an AD that knows how to maximize revenues. That’s ticket sales, donations, concessions, parking, merchandise, licensing and naming rights, sponsorships.

        If you spread out that ACC check evenly across all of Pitts programs, you have about $1.5 million for each program. That check alone pretty much covers sports like tennis or cross country. But doesn’t come close to covering sports like woman’s basketball, men’s baseball or soccer. Expenses rise each year at Pitt.

        Staff salaries, travel, scholies, insurance, recruiting, facility maintenance, upkeep, improvements and utilities, debt payments, marketing, etc

        Again, Pitt can’t afford to have the football program fail. It helps pay the bills.

132. I enjoy watching GT’s offense. When it works, it’s a thing of rushing the football beauty.

     Pitt gave up 484 yards of offense to GT last year with 435 of those yards on the ground. We lost the game 35-17. And, Pitt recovered four GT fumbles, so the score could have been worse. Benson, the GT RB who got hurt last week and is out for the season, accounted for approximately 200 yards of the rushing total. That’s good for us, but the backup is evidently pretty good.

     Pitt went into last year’s game using their base 4-3 defense. I’m expecting (more like hoping) for a 3-4 but with a couple LBs close to the line of scrimmage so it would resemble a 3-4 / 5-2 hybrid. USF stacked the two LBs a fair amount of the time so their defense resembled a 5-1-1.

     We shall see if bates can come up with a scheme and motivate his troops…

     My point is that you tried to “pooh pooh” many observers’ assessments that the OL looked bad by pointing to a 9.7 YPC in the first half when, in fact, he was averaging 3.4 YPC outside of a big run.

     If we want to cherry pick stats to prove a point, let’s at least get those facts straight.

     1. BigB – I believe that Bates only defended the triple option/veer option/flexbone spread option once in his tenure at Northwestern in a losing cause against Army. I may be wrong, but I think that I read that somewhere.

        On the plus side: 1) most of Pitt’s 2-deep D played in the GT game last year and should better understand their assignments; 2) Benson is out for GT; 3) Pitt should have something to prove this week after last week’s shellacking; 4) our CBs will be one on one (island) with the GT receivers as the SS and FS are needed to defend the run, but GT’s receivers are average so we should be able to cover them for the most part.

        On the minus side: 1) when GT throws the ball, they often send a RB over the middle or down the sideline and we will have a LB covering the deep ball in those instances; 2) We haven’t proven that we can stop GT’s run game when Marshall is the QB; 3) Our D will be worn out in the 4th quarter; 4) we will have to throw the ball to win. But, Watson will want to stick with the ball control running game too long and we will run out of time and come up short on points.

152. I really wonder, what goes thru a man like Narduzzis head when he keeps losing recruit after recruit? Then he starts losing them to programs that in no way can be considered blue blood? Does he look at himself and his staff? Does he blame Pitt as a hopeless situation? I’m a little concerned, as he refused to change his d, even when he got the same results year after year. Does he look at starting 16 seniors, and lay awake at night thinking how bad it will be next year? He must realize if this continues he will never get another shot at being a head coach. He has to care, no one with that size ego doesn’t care, but does he know what to do about it?

     Does Heather know what to do? Does she have a long term plan for football? What corrective actions can she take without the drastic solution of firing the coach? What does she do about the fact that the staff doesn’t have a dynamic recruiter? Has she looked at the historical attendance figures and realized a difficult OOC schedule does nothing to increase numbers, and that she doesn’t currently have a program which can successfully compete with that type of schedule? Does she have, or is she compiling a short list of coaches who may better meet goals? If the year gets away from them, will she be able to have a come to Jesus meeting with the Duzz.

     What level of performance will be embarrassing enough for administration to make necessary changes, or, and this is what I fear, will they say heck on it? I don’t think their pride will allow it to come to that, but I’m not positive. I do firmly believe the Duzz gets another year unless he resigns, as they don’t have the stomach for another coaching change.

     Could a 6-6 season change my mind, Yup. They must, Isay must, beat Tech this week to have any chance of that occurring. I will be rooting hard for that to happen. I’m not optimistic, but again, wait and hope. H2P

     So I decided to recreate it and have it upfront to either be flamed or revered (I kid on the revered part btw). I was pretty pessimistic in my assessment but as a reminder:

     This is based on memory so forgive me. I believe my thoughts were we would win with HFA against Georgia Tech and lose at UNC on the road. I have been told (and have come to agree with experience) that you should always consider a win against a team you shouldn’t beat and a loss against a team you should beat (general rule of thumb).

     So even if this weekend turns up as a loss…perhaps it is the loss for a team I expected to beat. Looking at UNC being 0-2 perhaps that is a W. Regardless, neither result this weekend will lead me to suggest my prognostication is at risk.

177. I’m still of the mind we win no less than five games.

     Funny thing about predictions. The national media all had us at 5 wins or less; the local media all had us at 7 wins or more. Except for Rossi.

     Against PSU all national media had us losing (some by a big score) while the local media all had us winning…again save Rossi.

178. Reed, A season is made up of 12 games not one and especially an OOC game. Would have loved a win or even a closer game but that didn’t happen. boo

     Like I said yesterday, I really do not like PITT in tomrrow’s game at all. GT is so hard to stop because they use all 4 downs throughout the game in their possessions. That means all they have to do is gain 2.5 yards per down, which doesn’t sound all that daunting. What this means to PITT is, they have to stop GT when they have a negative play such as a penalty, an in-completion or a good play and a stop by PITT on a particular down. Johnson will go for it on fourth down in his territory so it makes it difficult to stop them.

     To beat GT it takes discipline so we will see if Narduzzi has instilled any of that in this years team? This game also puts a lot of pressure on Pickett and the offense. They will have to score and score a lot. PITT will also have to stop with the mistakes but who didn’t know that. Can they do it? ?? I have doubts and this point in time . . …ike

179. 1st ACC game was against Fla State and stripes ( though incorrect) returned to our helmets..
