  1. well reed you are spot on so far. our Oline can’t block and our d-backs can’t cover. granted it’s early

  2. The irony upitt is that it was our 4 star guy that got the penalty that set up that scoring jet sweep. Although they should have never given up that kind of play anyway.

  3. Duzzi told them to defer. The Pitt captains selected to receive.

Secondly, that was Booster getting pushed down and he looked lost on that 3rd down blitz. He had an easy pick up and stood there.

  4. Duzz signalled to decline/defer choice to 2nd half…..bookser blew it and Narduzzi f bombed him pretty clearly. It’s bad when you get that call wrong…

It’s too late for my prediction as I just got in from another game…

  9. Pitt sure seems to have a pretty diverse play book this year. Lots of different looks and formations so far.

Just need to give Pickett some time and hopefully block better on runs.

    Let’s go Pitt!

      1. My comment was related more to the verdict that PITT is not ready. Also, at the time the INT was thrown, even though I agree PITT should keep running, the playcall was 16 rushes and 4 passes.

But, your point is well taken.

We are so close to dominating these dudes. Big opportunity for Narduzzi to prove us all wrong after halftime.

  25. Actually they just need to call a sensible mix of run plays (not to the right side…) and high percentage quick passes. Our ball control is a plus.

Also I think they need to blitz McSorley a bit. 4 man rush not getting it done

    Like

  26. Christodolou mishandled the punt as well….he may really be having troubles holding the ball…so maybe going for it instead of the three was smart.

As a poster above pointed out, Scarton (actually Jake) is the normal holder. However, the depth chart shows McAlone as the backup.

  27. Scarton was the holder. He was shown on the sidelines in a sling arm brace type of thing giving a talk to the punter after he dropped the punt. I don’t get why we are afraid to pass.

  31. At home in a driving rainstorm with an inexperienced QB, AND you elect to take the ball instead of defer???? What kind of neanderthal makes that decision? Nice 3 and out statement Narduzzi. I will take brains over brawn any day when it comes to decision making…looks like Watson pulled out his goal line playbook from VaTech game. 4th and 4 and he goes with an off tackle right??? Wasted opportunities…. Hopefully the trainers can get the Crisco off of Christodolu’s gloves at halftime. They were so impressed with his quick release, nobody evaluated his hands. Disaster.

  32. Mcsorley hasn’t even begun to scramble and run for big plays….yet!

Always a good idea to have backup qb to be the holder. Punters should not be holder’s. They typically only touch the ball 3-4 times per game.

Our db’s have their backs turned and have no clue when ball is coming.

Welp, GT gave up 2 kick return touchdowns today and lost to usf.

Good grief! Sorry guys, just frustrated. Still only 3 possessions away from a comeback. Our OC will probably try to run out the clock now and we won’t be in hurry up mode.

Have to admit Narduzzi had no idea how to win this game. He has such a undisciplined team and this offense is a complete failure. PSU is embarrassing Pitt and how can any coach play Briggs game after game or Stocker.

ACC can still be something to shoot for but I never imagined Narduzzi would be this bad. He is here no matter what this year and next and if there is not a significant improvement, he has to go. Shame his coaching and preparation are so poor. He really let me and his supporters down tonight. He no longer gets the benefit of any doubt. Not over reacting, I saw a bad coach tonight.

Now it is purely economic for Pitt. The AD will keep him as Pitt can win some games this year. But he was exposed tonight even to supporters. He is not good enough. I really hoped he was the coach that would break through to elevate the program. This game was a sea change for any thoughts he will be that guy.

He is not a P5 head coach.

  91. I try not to overreact, but. . . a good case can be made that our football program is in worse shape now than at any time since Walt Harris began rebuilding it:

Wannstedt took over a team that had gone to the Fiesta Bowl, and eventually had some success.
Haywood was an embarrassment, but wasn’t part of the program long enough to do lasting damage.
Graham was another embarrassment, but also didn’t really do any long-term damage here.
    Chryst was average.

It’s clear that we lack talent. Narduzzi’s recruiting has been subpar for a P-5 school for years, and it will take years for the program to recover. It sounds like he alienates local HS coaches and potential recruits, and has burned a lot of bridges in Western PA. Meanwhile, I don’t see any signs that he is above average at developing talent, and he sure isn’t above average as a gameday coach. I don’t see any reason to expect that the same coach who is digging us into a hole can be the coach we need to dig us out of it.

Guys like Upitt, Jay, Huff, Tex and others on this site have listed ways that PITT can commit to, and improve sports. IMO, their ideas are correct, but I don’t see any of them being implemented.

It is what it is, so don’t put too much of your happiness into the outcome of Pitt football.

Take that long one out and he averaged 30 yds a punt with an average 3 second hangtime which caused the punt return td, and a blocked punt which resulted in a td.

So can someone answer my question when it happened. Dairy kicked off to us late in the 4th. The ball bounced around the 10 and our returner caught it after the first bounce and signalled a fair catch. Can you do that and if you can, why wouldn’t every team signal a fair catch on an on-sides kick? I think our returner blew it and so did the refs because of our incompetence.

    1. It is a Pitt thing. I have the 1979 Pitt/PSU game on DVR. Game was in State College and it took about five minutes for the ref to sort the coin toss. Pitt won the toss and the Pitt player kept saying he wanted the ball AND to defend the end zone to his right. The ref kept explaining to him that he only got one choice- the ball or the direction. The player would say he wanted the ball, and then just as the ref was about to make the announcement the player would add that he wanted that end zone. The ref couldn’t seem to get the Pitt player to understand a simple concept of how the game operates. Unlike tonight, that Pitt team had players, coaches, and even on OCS (even though it was an away game) and won easily.

Watched the game on TV and you could clearly see and read HCPN questioning what happened and reiterating that he told them to defer.

  117. Guys, I think you all are missing the AD game. Our current AD was hired by a committee that included the head football coach. Because of that, the head coach gets a big raise and extension (quid pro quo).

AD fires at least 7 or 8 coaches and says to the chancellor that the state of the program is much worse than she thought. Chancellor believes this because of all the terminations. AD explains to chancellor that new hires will take 4 years to turn things around. Chancellor says wow and extends AD. AD strikes gold with pay on her way to next job. It’s a sham, kind of like politics. The only ones getting screwed are the fans.

Can someone explain again why we wore the Akron colors? Is it because we play like them? Aspire to be like them? What? I am so confused.

Franklin was not trying to rub narduzzi’s face in it by challenging the call. He did it so that the dairy announcer would tell potential recruits that Franklin coaches these kids hard until the final whistle and helps him recruit. Narduzzi blocks all reporters, Franklin embraces them. Poor marketing by athletic department. Who runs that show anyway? This is why Heather is not the answer. Still laughing at the hurley swing and miss and how everyone thinks she is great because of capel hire. Capel hire was the result of a mistake with hurley. I am not impressed yet.

You send out an ACC academic and he can’t figure it out, that says it all. Narduzzi should know if the player is capable of figuring out that if you win the toss, you defer to the 2nd half.

This was not an issue of the refs getting it wrong. Please don’t try to muddy the water pal. It was the player. It was also the player that dropped the snaps. It was the punter that couldn’t hit one. A field goal kicker that missed.

Penalties like they got were terrible and on the coach for the discipline issue. I am sure narduzzi doesn’t teach his players to grab facemasks, hold in the end zone, drop punts, miss tackles. Be mad at the results, not the ones that tell it like it is and not how we want it to be.

For if you got back and look in the winter or spring I noted that Pitt would most likely or somewhat likely go 4-8 this year. That was before (i think) they fired Otis and had to eat $10 mil and before (i think) they extended Duzz.

In the first half alone, the special teams—and one player in particular—was responsible for an 11 point swing due to his inability to catch the snap. I did not agree with that 4th and 3 call when Pitt showed absolutely zero ability to pass. Penn State just loaded the box and stopped QO. No doubt in my mind that was going to happen.

In the second half, the special teams’ penalties on punt returns had 3 or 4 straight possessions start inside the 10.

Such an awful night of football. The OL is awful. I’m not sure whether Pickett is not confident in his ability to throw the ball down field, if the receivers are getting no separation, or whether it’s that he’s running for his life due to OL play, but it could be all 3.

Special teams are a disaster. They killed Pitt last night when the game was still close (and continually through the remainder of the game).

So if it rains we cannot expect to throw the football because I know Kenny can throw the ball when it is dry. Where are wide-open offenses Watson had at Nebraska and Indiana? Who was the former receivers coach recruiting that no one on this roster can get separation? The freshman Louis might be a good one, but he about broke in half when he got crushed and fumbled in the fourth. Why did Ffrench not return those kickoffs and when he did looked like he ran a 5.5 40?

Pitt has a Pitt problem. Moose was .500 here and Dixon was treading down and both are at different school and winning. Dixion picked up a four-star point guard late last evening. He was recruiting classes at Pitt in the end that weren’t even totaling four stars all together.

This university doesn’t care about football. Forget firing Narduzzi because Heather will be told to hire an assistant because no way would a coach leave for Pitt playing in a rented stadium. That assistant will be like the old boss.

PC wasn’t given the resources to succeed at Pitt.

Dixon wasn’t challenged and was protected by his good friend Stevie.

Pitt doesn’t have the funds for good assistants so it gets retreads that nobody wants. Heather doesn’t challenge narduzzi. Pitt is more concerned about grade point averages than wins and losses.

Pitt allows others to dictate tailgate policy and students wait two hours to get bussed back to campus. What a wonderful experience.

Pitt doesn’t understand college athletics, doesn’t care and thinks fans are foolish enough to keep buying season tickets.

The only thing that will get Pitt’s attention is a drop in season tickets.

Show me you’re serious Pitt when you release the feasibility study for an OCS, when your AD has final say on coaching hires, when you increase the budget to compete, when you hold coaches accountable and demand results on the field.

Again, Pitt is fine with mediocrity as long as they breakeven financially and as long as the ACC keeps them as a member.

Pitt did a fine job embarrassing the conference on national TV though.

  140. Waited until this morning to post, so my head is a little cooler. Obviously last night was horrendous in the end, but Jesus Christ you guys are depressing to read. Here’s my take because I don’t think the sky is falling like most of you.

    Positives:
-run game in the first half
-Oline opening some holes in the first half (and not getting manhandled like some people were posting)
-should’ve actually been winning at the end of the first half against a top ten team
-most teams we play won’t be as good as Psu

    Negatives:
I think we all know the negatives as evidenced by all the posts (and I’m with you on many of them), but my biggest concern is the lack of resiliency. We were in this game for a large part of the game and it seemed like the players just gave up towards the middle of the 3rd quarter. I know Psu has the more talented players, but we were in this and it shouldn’t have gotten so ugly.

Also, really hated the play calling and game plan. When our run game was working, we looked pretty good. But when it wasn’t working, we did not have any answers on offense. Hopefully we don’t have to play any more games in the rain this year, because we’re obviously not competent in these conditions.

Time to move on. Ugly final score, but I’m attributing this more to the players giving up and not being prepared/experienced for terrible weather conditions. So obviously not good, but for all of you saying Narduzzi and Lyke should be fired and are terrible, gives me a break. It’s one really bad half and final score. I get being frustrated, but let’s not be irrational here. If at seasons end, we’re 5-7 or worse, then I’ll jump aboard the “can the coach” train, but not after one bad game. You’re all smarter than this.

Pitt doesnt get a participation trophy for 1st half play.

Is it surprising that Pitt got blown out? The worst loss in the series since 1968. Yes and No.

I really thought Pitt had a chance. Predicted 23-15.

I’m very rational after analyzing the past 4 years. Narduzzi is not the future. Rivalry games like this really show it and the rest of the nation now knows.

Many will argue to let this year and next year play out since he hasnt been playing with his players and he’s still learning how to coach. Hogwash.

Here’s what Pitt should have done:
      Hired a proven head coach
Had money to hire young assistants with high potential (subject to AD approval)
Focused a greater effort on getting 4 star talent to join the program
Committed to footballs future by releasing a feasibility study for a multi purpose facility
Had an AD that was not indirectly hired by your football coach

Could of, would of, should of

Pitt’s BoT and Gallaghers leadership team should be embarrassed by this performance. However, I’m sure the Nitters on those boards and teams are very happy at the outcome. They planted the seeds for Pitt’s athletic destruction long ago.

As far as Psu, I think you’re wrong about only 8 wins, although I’d rather you be right and they’re 8 wins or less at end of season.

  148. Sorry, that was a little harsh. Just as frustrated as everyone else and I’m not ready to write off this season. And I think there is more talent on this team than what we saw on a disgusting night.

  149. Narduzzi = Foge
Heather will be like Bozik if this isnt addressed this year

The worst beat down to your main rival in 50 years
Narduzzi got extended and is getting paid $3.5M for a national embarrassment (probably lost millions in PR alone)
And his recruiting is trending down leaving Pitt with little hope for the future (ranking at #55 this year based on avg stars)

Pitt is on a path to become Rutgers

  150. That game was a game changer for me. That was farcical and was a summation of all things Pitt football. Now will Narduzzi be fired? No. But he should be today. That was so piss poor of a effort going into a big game on national TV. Narduzzi embarrassed the University. He will be here until PItt has no choice. NO one will get behind this program now. Even his detractors have to be stunned just how abysmal this effort was. How you call no passing plays at all. NO bubble screens, no quick slants, no nothing. How you play Briggs over and over is insane. If you are a leader who demands excellence, you have to fire Narduzzi today. UCF is going to make Pitt look like that Houston Arizona game. Complete fiasco. Just so stunned on the ineptitude shown last night. .NO one including me saw this coming. NO one had PSU wining by this amount. Look the coastal is bad so who knows. But what I do know is Narduzzi was exposed and his program is not close to being good.

  151. Guys – new article up. It’s not a pretty picture of the program.

Forget about an OCS. I personally have had candid face-to-face conversations with two ex-Chancellors (Posvar and Nordenberg) who both told me “Pitt (didn’t) doesn’t want it and the City won’t allow it”. Add to that Gallagher couldn’t give a rat’s ass about it either and the subject is dead.

It will never be in Oakland – somewhere else maybe, but not on the main campus.

  152. It all goes back to recruiting. I have been complaining about it for three years. It has been a complete fail.
Seventeen seniors should tell you all you need to know. The makeshift O-line should tell you all you need to know. No wide receivers or tight ends with the ability to separate. Mediocre transfers playing first string on the O-line, at wide receiver and tight end. Most of the best of the WPIAL playing elsewhere.

This is the major difference between Narduzzi and Franklin. Franklin smart enough to hire Terry Smith to recruit the WPIAL. ND getting what they want out of the WPIAL. Narduzzi offering most 4 and 5 star guys nationally and not getting them. Franklin losing great players and replacing them with more great players.

Man for man, at almost every position Pitt was outclassed. After the adrenaline wore off Pitt was manhandled. Penalties and mistakes came frequently, PSU missed a field goal and dropped many passes too. But they made more big plays and had a decent passing game because their QB had time to throw and receivers that got open vs ours that did not.

The buck stops with him, but firing him won’t make a bit of difference if we can’t afford top flight assistants, and get a coach that can convince elite players to come to Pitt.

There are no stars on this team. Ollison, Wirginis, and Weaver had good games, but you need much more than that. After PSU realized we couldn’t pass, they shut down the run, game over. Pickett ran for his life, and Ford was not heard from. You can’t compete without stars making plays. There are no Aaron Donalds, James Conners, Tyler Boyds or Q Hendersons, Blewitts or Winslows on this team. Guys that still looked great in a loss and kept you in the game.

All that being said, everyone should have had this one penciled in as a loss. If we bounce back next week who knows. We will find out how much pride these guys have left.
