Penn State week and isn’t this getting interesting. The parking/tailgating fiasco just reinforces my decision to watch the game at home with friends. But I had a true blast with everyone last Saturday.
Well post up Know the Enemy (could someone do up an article about PSU for this? It would help me greatly as my week is two-blocked with medical and family stuff – thanks) and a Game Thread & Predictions. But here are some things to read –
Pitt’s players are blocking out noise for PSU (P-G):
“I don’t have social media, so this is the most social media I’ve gotten this week,” Dintino, 23, joked Tuesday to several reporters at Pitt’s South Side practice facility. “I kind of got rid of that when I got to college, so I don’t know what they’re saying out there.”
As Pitt’s left guard, Dintino will have to deal with noise on the field, too, against the No. 13 Nittany Lions. Looking back on Pitt’s 2016 win against Penn State at Heinz Field, he recalled: “It was loud.” Looking back on Pitt’s 2017 loss to Penn State at Beaver Stadium, he recalled: “It was loud.”
Good – he doesn’t know what I’ve been saying about the OL!
2007 — LeSean McCoy vs. Penn State’s linebackers
McCoy famously spurned the Lions as a hot high school recruit out of Harrisburg, and that fact alone would have given us a juicy story line to follow. This matchup would have been about so much more, though, as two of Linebacker U’s all-time greats would have been lining up on the other side of the field. Sean Lee and Dan Conner posted a combined 283 tackles to lead a dominant defense that season, but could they have kept up with McCoy, who racked up 1,328 yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman? It’s a shame we never got a chance to find out.
Penn State isn’t just a game (P-G):
Narduzzi called Nittany Lions quarterback Trace McSorley “maybe the front-runner” for the Heisman Trophy, because of his dual-threat ability and being Penn State’s “emotional leader.” He also ticked off several names on both sides of the ball that stand out to him as bigger, stronger and faster than Albany’s personnel, but acknowledged that the roster presented by the Nittany Lions — who opened as 10.5-point favorites on VegasInsider.com — doesn’t pose much of a difference from the players Pitt practices against on a daily basis.
+10.5 points looks about right to me. It might have gone down I suppose but I think this is going to be a tough game for us to pull out – but a full house might help…even if half will be PSU fans.
Who has the better All-Time Team? (Trib)
I’ll go with Pitt on the strength of three players – Goldberg, Dorsett and Green. But overall it is pretty close.
Marino had seven more passing yards than Sunseri (Trib):
Yeah – I changed the headline as a dig to the Sunseri haters… The writers really should have called this a “Modern History” All-Time team for Pitt because Goldberg was the best in the country for two straight years. Years that Pitt won national Championships. I’d put him in front of Martin in a second based on what they did in college.
I think people have a hard time separating what players actually do in college for Pitt as opposed to what they do in the NFL. I’d also put James Conner in front of Martin for his rushing TD production alone. Here is what both players did:

So – 1,090 more yards; 0.5 more ypc (and that is a big amount) and 37 more TDs cinched it for Conner and truthfully there is no real comparison.
Here’s what Goldberg did for us.
At the University of Pittsburgh, under coach Jock Sutherland, he led the Pitt Panthers to back-to-back national championships in 1936 and 1937. Goldberg’s 1936 team won the 1937 Rose Bowl. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1937 and was runner-up for the Heisman in 1938. He was also an All-American in both 1937 and 1938, first as a halfback and then as a fullback. During his Pitt career he amassed 1,957 rushing yards, a school record that stood until 1974 when Tony Dorsett surpassed it. Goldberg was part of Pitt’s legendary Dream Backfield along with Dick Cassiano, John ‘Chick’ Chickerneo, & Curly Stebbins. Some experts consider Pitt’s Dream Backfield superior to the more famous Four Horsemen of Notre Dame.

Despite what Penn State fans say, this matchup tends to have a huge impact on both teams’ season outcomes. There is a direct correlation between the results of the rivalry games and how each respective program performs that season. Pitt’s greatest era from 1922 to 1938 featured complete dominance in the games against Penn State. Conversely, Penn State outplayed Pitt in the series (going 32-13-2) between 1952 and 2000, and also became more nationally relevant with two national championships.
That is an excellent and overlooked point – good for the Pitt News to get that!

The Pitt Receiver Returned the Season’s Opening Kickoff for a TD
PITTSBURGH—Pitt wide receiver Maurice Ffrench was selected the ACC Specialist of the Week for his performance in the Panthers’ 33-7 victory against Albany in the 2018 season opener.
Ffrench gave the Panthers the perfect start to the season as he returned the game’s opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. It was the first kick return score of his collegiate career and the first time on record that Pitt opened a season with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
A native of New Brunswick, N.J., Ffrench also added another touchdown later in the game on a nine-run rush around the corner, giving the junior wide receiver his first career multi-score performance. He finished the game with a career-high 119 all-purpose yards as well.
Led by special teams coordinator Andre Powell, Pitt specialists have now combined to win the ACC Specialist of the Week honors five times dating back to the start of the 2017 season after Quadree Henderson (twice), Alex Kessman and Ryan Winslow were each honored last year.
Next up, the Panthers host rival Penn State on Saturday night at Heinz Field. The 8 p.m. game will be televised nationally on ABC as the in-state foes battle on the gridiron for the 99th time.

Ike that was just Upitt’s getting ready to salute this week’s opponents coach, you know, his impression of “Jimmy One Finger” performed in stereo. And speaking of Upitt, he did realize that he was going to a Pitt Panther game, right? Proper attire makes the man. Hopefully you guys took up a collection for the misplaced Steeler fan so that he could buy a Pitt Polo or something similar for Christ’s sake. And what happened to his dome? Last time I saw Mark, he had hair! Hope the collection basket was full enough to buy him a hat too. Thank God you guys were sitting on the shady side of Heinz Field or else it could have been a, “ this is your brain on drugs” heatstroke day for the poor guy.

Ike the more that the you show me, the more I want to know ME. You’re my hero. I’d firgotten how much I loved this band. Saw J. Geils back in the day with my SAE mates at the Civic Arena. Floor seats front section. Was higher than any white boy outside of the federal penitentiary was allowed to be at the time. Now, probably still one of the those condeming reasons, due to previous circumstances, discouraging me from ever successfully running for public office most likely.
Man getting out of the Arena without at least a broken ankle was a major accomplishment for all of us, a minor miracle really. Spent the entire night, just like everybody else on the floor, standing on our seats trying to get alittle better view of the band than the guy standing on his chair right in front of you in the next row forward. All fun & games, especially when one of us came up with the brilliant idea that it would be a good game to see how many chairs that we could run, behind the people standing on them, before knocking somebody over. It was pretty far!
All innocent fun until security showed up in response to one guy who found no humor in our antics & promised us all the need for future front bridgework when he met us outside after the concert! (He never showed)
What a band. And I mean BAND! That is like the most talented jam team ever, J. Geils. They could have been just a bunch of guys that could just as well picked up guitars, drums, keyboard & harmonica at the corner pawn shop &, like that, had been good enough to play the Saturday nite Smoker with the Tri Delts at our SAE Fraternity House on North Bellefield a week later. That much talent, an electric party jive sound that felt totally organic & spontaneous EVERY time you listened, that kind of BAND.

I was listening to ESPN’s “First Team” show on SiriusXM this week and one of the hosts stated that probably 90% of P5 coaches would identify their OL as a liability. His position was that due to spread offenses being used more and more at the HS level, the OLmen are just not being developed as they once were in HS…food for thought when discussing OL recruitment.

Saturday will expose an O line ill prepared for primetime. I hope that they’re ready. This week will answer a whole bunch questions about where this team & program exactly are at this point in time, actually.

I expect the OL will get better over the course of the year. This will be a true test. I can’t wait to see if Pitt can run the ball this week.
As fans, would we take 4.3 yard per carry that App State got against them???
PSU gave up 159 net yards rushing at a 4.3 avg per carry. 2 rushing TDs, 8 rushing 1st downs, 451 in total offense.

If penn state was smart, they would throw the ball over the top every chance they get.
If Pitt was smart, they would pressure McSorley every play.
The team that wins will be the one that can exploit the others weakness.

Pressuring McSorley is not an easy task. He gets away from the rush more often then not. And when he gets away it could easily lead into a long pass play against our most vulnerable defensive weakness.

Whoever wins those battles of our CBs left on an island 1 on 1 & the excessive pressure required to be placed on the opposing QB by our front 8, wins this game, IMO.

These two coaches are not exactly known for their sideline coaching skills. So preparation will be important. I don’t think many Johnnie Majors type halftime adjustments will be made. If Pitt cannot stop the Pedo running game it will be a long day. Conversely, Pitt must stay on offense and control the clock to win.

PSU’s O will be hard to stop. I hope Pitt does put the corners on an”island” too often this week. But, not bringing the safeties up will allow PSU to run a little more. The Pitt D won’t shut down PSU. But, a few stops in each half will help alot.
Pitt’s O should do okay against the PSU D. Ball control. Chew up clock. Keep PSU’s O off the field.
This should be a decent, and possibly close, game.

McSorley is a HUGE part of their run game. Looks like he has rushed about 12 times per game. He can gash a D. Surprisingly he has mostly avoided injury.

He’s a gamer, and they generally score a bunch of points. And they have one WR that will out jump any of our guys.
Pressure him from different angles. DTs need to stay in lanes. One LB will need to track McS movements.

If you pressure him from the outside and stay in the inside running lanes mcsorley tends to scamper around towards the sideline then throw a weak pass out of bounds. Seen him do it dozens of times over his career.

Okay, I’ll say it Ike, the picture of Upitt shows the most obvious thing and that is his prediction of the Pitt season Win/Loss record after Saturday.
Pitt needs to run blitz all day and keep the spy on the guy, which is mcgirley. Hit him hard and hit him often. Pitt needs to punch the dairy athletes in the nose and then keep hitting them all day. Whoever quits punching, loses.
The spy MUST be the most sure tackler we got because those plays will decide who wins and who loses.
That said, Trench warfare!

psu is good and PITT will not have their way with this team but I think there could be a few surprises that do not include hand clapping. At least I hope there are. Mark (Upitt) is a cool dude. Just a kind heart-ed hick from Fayette County.

Penn States offensive line is the best they’ve had in years. Pitt better be ready. I think McSwirley is one of the most over rated QBs in the country. Pickett must and will outplay him.

Dr Tom, J Geils, I lost count how many times I saw those guys play. We must have bumped into each other at least a couple times. Did they not play at Cleveland fronting the Stones along with Tower of Power? For some strange reason those days are a little foggy. The LP/8track “Full House” was wore out in the party car. RIDICULOUS to say that McSorley is not to be feared on Saturday.
At this level, he is DEADLY. Threw the PERFECT pass two years ago with time running out that would have set PSU up to WIN… if it weren’t for Receiver No. 11 dropping the ball.
As I’ve already posted, McSorley the better COLLEGE Quarterback. But, Pickett the one with the better NFL career.
Let’s hope Pickett gives us all a good glimpse of the FUTURE this weekend.

Agree (without using the cap magnification) that McS is a gamer and a solid college QB. He’s a difference maker. PSU should be favored for a number of reasons included QB experience, but don’t count Pitt out.

Hey Jay… tailgate plan will be fluid depending on when we can get one of our vehicles into Red 5A. I’m shooting for getting there around 2 and hoping a spot is available. If not I’m driving around until 5:00 until they let me in. No tailgating allowed until 5:00. Who comes up with this crap?

Millin played well – he went out in (I believe) the 3rd qtr with what appeared to be an injury – later confirmed to be a cramp.
I saw him get beat once all day – and KP was on the right side of the field, so no harm.

After watching PS/ Ap State. Pressure constant on MCs worked till end when AP seemed to slow enough and only rushed 3. Mcs then completed .some game breakers. Sanders got nothing till end of game when Ap went to rushing 3. Prevent philosophy never works. If we can’t get pressure we done . If we can disrupt we win. Also if we get penalties to stop key drives we loose. Ap. State had the smoothest penalty free execution I have seen in a long time ,PS did not. Here is hoping!H2P.

Sorry did not mean they were penalty free but free of consequential penalties most of the game. Their fast smooth execution overcame the ones they had for the most part. PS on the other hand had a few consequential ones. They had Mc s running to the sideline until they went to the rush 3 at the end.

So anyways I figure there should be a new article coming out sometime soon and thought I would share a family story about the psu vs PITT rivalry:
This story could be epic so I’ll just share the nuts and bolts of it. The young son and I were very very close while he was growing up, I guess the truth is, while we were both growing up. I had a job to do and needed a daycare helper to watch over him during the summer. 3 houses down lived a large family that were stout Catholics and good people. The one daughter (Sharon) still in high school was the perfect person to watch my little guy while I worked.
Listen to this, it just wasn’t Sharon who watched my son but the whole family took over in taking care of him. In fact, they would want him even when I was home. They fell in love with him and vice versa. They were stealing my boy……. but in a good way.
So it’s all great right? Well almost, these salt of the earth people were a God send to me and we couldn’t have been happier. The one problem? This was a psu clan. 3 of their 5 kids had gone or were going to psu at the time……… To put this into a better perspective… my son was only 2 years old or so when this family started watching him. When I say family, I mean the whole family took him under their wings. It was really quite special. and this went on in o, well lets say there is still a special bond between the family, my son and I
Over the years and after all the psu stories they slowly turned my son into, sadly, a psu fan and a big one. ugh! Time to move. Not because of this great family it was time to move. Right to where I still live 36 years later. Had the son in daycare and all bases were covered. Did that stop them from coming over and picking him up to take back for dinner? (i didn’t mind at all) NO. They treated him like gold and bought him psu shirts and gear. What’s a big PITT fan to do?
So that’s the foundation. With the addition of a mixed dog named Ginger, part golden retriever and part German Shepard. btw, one of my all time favorite dogs but they all were my favorite. We saved Ginger. but anyways and I know this was a very long prologue but the story begins
My boy, who I would say was no older that 4 or 5 when this tradition started, absolutely loved psu and Walter Payton of all people? My own son had become a cultist???
So the big game rolls around and I thought, lets make this fun. I would take Ginger into another room and shut the door. We then would each get a paper plate and be allowed to put on any food that we though would entice Ginger to eat first that was in the house. Whichever plate Ginger would take a bite from first would then be allowed to decorate, first Ginger, and then the game room downstairs in the team colors they rooted for with cray paper. I think I lost 3 years in a row. Food and football games. That would be my finest memory of this “non-rivalry” football game. bullschitt! << My son is now as big of a PITT fan as I am.. The good guys finish first again.

Folks – some housekeeping issues: Comments are held in moderation for swearing (as we know) and if a post has over four URL links in it. Also – anything political or religious (using keywords) is held back also. That was well publicized when I put those limitations in place.
That has been the standard since we started up. So – if your comment isn’t posted that will be the reason for it and please don’t ask me about individual posts and why they are being held in moderation. I don’t go through those posts and approve or disapprove and won’t start. I will say that most have swearwords in them If you post is held then that’s life – write another one.- it’s like certain posters can’t learn not to do it.
Also – posting on here is a privilege and not a God-given right. I have a pretty thick skin overall but I’ve hit the frustration level with cheap shots and personally disparaging posts. I have never gone out of my way to insult others on here and have found that some posters can’t understand that they shouldn’t do that also.
I own this blog, I maintain this blog and I control this blog. No one else does.
So – I’ve previously banned one person and am going to do more of that if necessary. For almost three years I’ve been extremely liberal with what commenters can write on here but I’ve had it with ingratitude and pettiness. If you find you can’t post on here there is a reason for it… and I’m not doing “Time Outs” or such.
I’ve said many times I am not tethered to this blog once I publish something and won’t ever be.

I do envy them having a consistently good team to root for with lots of 4-stars to get excited about. We need to get back to that…

McSorley is dangerous but.. he’s inaccurate and inconsistent. He misses A LOT of open receivers. We need to control the run game with the front four so we can drop LB’s into coverage and limit how often we need to blitz- that’s when McSorley is dangerous.

I drove three and a half hours to the Albany game last week and for the sake of my six month old’s sanity…we will be watching the game in the living room this weekend sparing him from travel two weeks in a row. I just purchased him his first Pitt outfit…a onezie that has #12 on it…I’m not going to tell him about Tino Sunseri though.
For those that think this game is not a rivalry, my wife’s cousin just graduated from PSU and is living with us temporarily. Even though he is from the Burgh, he hates Pitt as much as I hate PSU. He offered me $150 a piece for my two section 513 tickets. I told him, hell no. I gave the tix to an elderly couple in my hometown that are proud Pitt fans that I know will use and appreciate them. We need every Pitt fan we can get in the stands!

(Just an opinion) I can understand about the game day comments being so long it makes sense to break it up with “newer comment -older comments” sections. However, for all the other wonderful articles I personally find it annoying to not have one thread for all the comments. I realize you just recently changed this by request but I wonder if others also prefer the normal, simple approach of “one article – one comment section” better, except for the very long game day articles.” I wonder what other POV brothers think?

I wish people would quit saying that Pitt and Pedo have a “rivalry”. Rivalries are formed when teams play each other every year. If a team loses, there is always next year to get even, or to increase the winning streak. You can’t have a rivalry when one team refuses to play the other. The Nitters would rather play Temple than Pitt, which was just made perfectly clear with the recent announcement. Pitt fans need to get over it and move on…
Reed, hope your back is holding up okay. Wish you could avoid surgery, because those hacks that love to operate don’t always improve things. There are a few places around that provide therapeutic approaches without surgery. But I’m sure you have investigated all options. Good luck, and hope the Pitt/Pedo game provides some necessary distraction.

Well, I’ve put it off and tried everything else but am taking the plunge. Supposedly the surgeon is the ‘best’ Johns Hopkins has (as they all are) so I think it will be fine.
In my 4th day of not smoking – that’s going surprisingly well.

As an old Pitt fan, I view PSU, ND and WVU as rivals in that order. As much as I would like to go to the PSU game, I have opted to go to the big Coastal game against GT with 9 other family members, a key game on us winning the Coastal.
After a Pitt win in State College in the old days, I tried to buy a Penn State Sucks T Shirt from a vendor outside the stadium. My drunk friends saved me from the vendor who tried to climb over the counter after me. Now that is an example of a rivalry.

Too bad that rivalry is gone, now Frank. We can’t make something a rivalry that isn’t. I just loved the sickly look that came over JoePa’s face when Pitt would win. I just couldn’t stomach that guy. He sure hated Pitt, and I think that is why he turned down the Steelers head coaching job- he didn’t want to be in the same city as Pitt.

Two years ago, one of the Nitter’s big plays was sending Barkley on a wheel route. I remember thinking oh no as Barkley circled out and poor Mike Caprara had to try to cover him. Obviously a mis-match to their liking.
I think we will be better prepared for that play now, but still tough for our linebackers to defend with a speedy back like Sanders…
Perhaps Pitt runs that play with Ford…
Need some big plays in all three phases to win this one.

That explains our heated rivalries with Syracuse and Georgia Tech. And that big Penn State Michigan Rivalry.
Got it. Just one question.. If there’s no rivalry, why is it “Hate Pitt Week” in Pedo Valley? They don’t have a “Hate Maryland Week” or a “Hate Rutger Week.” Don’t they play every year??

The psu administration and fans are the most consistent people I’ve ever witnessed. They are constantly in denial about practically everything…. No child rape, No cover-up, Hire a head coach up to his neck in another rape cover-up and No rivalry. Problem here is they should have said No and spoke up when they should have. A cult X 2 ………. That will be the day when one of my grandkids even mentions they are thinking of attending that filthy piece of garbage school.. The day I lay down and die.. ike

Jay, right now ‘Cuse and GT are not heated rivalries in football. Does anyone sit around over the Summer plotting revenge against these teams? Like going up to Sappy Valley and painting the Witless Lion Blue and Gold? Of course not. I am exceeded only by ike in my hatred of the Pedos, but rivalries can’t be turned on and off like a switch every 5-10 years or so. The bulletin board stuff doesn’t work when the comments are 10 years old.

I have been ANTI-Narduzzi from the “Get-Go.” But have always been willing to give CREDIT when due.
From today’s Trib Review…
The team will stay in a hotel Friday night, as it usually does the night before home games, but Narduzzi has no plans to allow his players to hang out in the lobby all day.
They’ll ride busses back to their South Side training facility for meetings and some light weight work just to stay loose.
