  1. First comment here will be about football. After that, BB comments will undoubtedly again take over until a coach is signed. I cannot understand the Narduzzi PR philosophy.

In interviews, he goes over the top in his profuse praise of the players, both individually and by position. Then if/when this leads to lower than expected results on the field he criticizes the negative reactions. At the same time, Narduzzi will not open up practices so that the fans can see the on field performances for themselves.

What does Narduzzi expect? The AD needs to address this problem and work this out with PN. It is causing a significant rift between the fans and the team at a time when seats are empty and Pitt could use some positive publicity.

  2. There is a real element of paranoia there as it pertains to football. Most Pitt coaches would hold open practices all spring and most of fall… then close one or two toward the end of fall camp to work on trick plays.

Again, when you are in desperate need of season ticket sales and donations you should give fans as much as possible.

  3. Someone published the win statistics for open vs. closed practices, and it showed that it doesn’t matter as far as winning whether or not practices are closed. So shouldn’t EJ or someone in the athletic dept. be discussing this with PN? that contrast vs. the Nitters couldn’t be greater, and Pitt does come off as being a bit paranoid, like someone from Pedo may swoop in and steal the secrets.

  4. When Narduzzi first began the closed practices I didn’t have a real problem with them. Now that’s it’s gone on for so long I can see how detrimental the idea has been to the football program. Although I think they had an impact on the PITT win over psu. By now, the bad has overtaken the good.

  5. ike, there may be a reason for say, the practices for one specific game to be closed. I think Pitt fans can understand that there may be a reason. But their paranoia (really just PN’s paranoia) is excessive, and as a result there is practically no excitement among fans for Spring ball. It makes me wonder if they really even perceive of the PR problem they have, which contributes to the empty seats on game day.

    1. The game week practices have always been closed. What was open we’re the Spring Drills and Fall Camp save one or two days.

I have no problem with game week closure…that makes sense as you are putting in your game plans and practicing your different offenses and defenses tailored to the game ahead of you. But to just close them all is ridiculous and it really shuts out the fans.

Believe me, EJ has lobbied for more exposure…

I think there could be a way to lighten up the closed practices and still remain a bit anonymous with the information that’s given out. I think that time has come whee Heather has to stand up tall and not ask but give options to the coach.. ike

It was another opportunity lost to get people thinking about the upcoming FB season and maybe sell some tickets. They should be leveraging the Pedo game as much as possible to sell different packages and maybe tie in some food service deals or other promotional programs. I don’t get it with these people. I would tell Coach that he needs to open up practices. I just did extend you didn’t I. And I’d tell him we’re tarping sections of the upper deck. Coach needs to know who’s in charge.

I’d also make a decision on the new basketball coach with an announcement Monday. This can’t drag out any longer.

But there’s a leadership void at the moment. Heather needs to step up.

  46. Been kind of hesitant to post on the basketball coach search because I think on one hand there has been some unfair/unjust criticism of AD Lyke, but I also think there has been extremely fair criticism on the other hand.

But frankly no one here knows what is going on behind close doors. So its speculation at best.

Frankly, the fair criticisms to Ms Lyke (IMO obviously)
    1) Allowing Hurley to dictate the terms of the negotiation
    2) The lack of having a “hit” list if you will (Mr. Hurley you have until 12pm Monday afternoon to decide, if not I will move on to other candidates. She had to know for quite some time she was going to purge KS…the fact they are now engaging in mass interviews shows she is not a P5 AD…very reactionary.
    3) Not pulling back the offer once the details were leaked “you wanna play games Mr. Hurley…fine 2 can play that game”
    4) And this one is more systemic…the Iron Curtain like approach to Pitt athletics in total. This is a really bad way to win the hearts and minds of disillusioned fans. Not to mention that my brother informed me she did not attend a meeting with the players after the Stallings firing. Say what you will about the talent or lack thereof…she as the chief owes it to those players to attend and at least act like she is listening to their concerns and issues. It does not come off as being a good leader. (more of a let them eat cake type). Fair or unfair that is the perception that came off (again according to my brother who is a b-ball season ticket alum.

But what I cannot blame her on is the following:
Pitt is going to be a hard sell for anyone who has an offer with a school that offers 1 or more attributes:
    1) a Local recruiting pipeline with even a modicum of b-ball talent
    2) a regional pipeline for recruiting talent (and if you got national/international that is gravy 🙂 )
    3) Deep pockets for building a team and sustaining 1 and/or 2 above

I would even say if a coach who is the next “big thing” is going to look at the criteria above and say do I want to risk having to restart at the lower rungs because I have those 3 strikes against me at a program? I believe Ralph Williard, IIRC, was arguably one of those guys who righted/rebooted himself after the Pitt debacle but never obtained that high loft of the cream of the crop P5 schools. There have been others…but all things being equal…an offer that say is $50,000-$100,000 less a year but has even 1 of those 3 attributes previously mentioned is much more attractive to hungry young coaches than the Pitt opportunity. It’s not that it won’t have challenges mind you, It’s that they won’t have their hands/feet tied to do it. I think even with an ego, as long as that coach has other options they will go with that option.

In other words, Ms Lyke really doesn’t have a lot to offer other than $$$$ and as you can see a top 15 salary hasn’t exactly brought a cast of even 10’s knocking the door down.

So what does this say to me (if my analysis is accurate or at least in the ballpark).

    A) Pitt is a less than mediocre program and will not attract the best of the best. Sorry guys we are SOL in my opinion.
    B) If you want to get results perhaps you need to stop living in a dream world. I hate to say it…you want to turn this program around perhaps you need to find some one who needs a “road to redemption.” Yes I know Sean Miller makes me uneasy as well…but I think the 3 things above are going to limit our choices.
    C) If Pitt does settle which is likely…we are talking a lengthy time before this thing is righted.

I am not trying to criticize/single out UPITT here but the idea of pay and get the right person…it’s not that easy anymore. Pitt is tainted, not because of NCAA/scandals…but because of institutional mismanagement/incompetence.

Ms Lyke is not to blame for that but her handling of several things on the major sports level does make put her level of competence into question.

    1. Most of this is pretty good. I disagree that we are below a mediocre program.

Pitt had among the highest winning % of any school in D1 from 2001 to 2014.
We made The Dance 10 straight years from 01 to 2011. 13 years of 15 from 01 to 2016.
      We were a #1 seed…..in the NCAA’s…..twice.
      We were in The Dance
We play in a great facility.
And we just made, what would have been, a Top 15 HC salary in D1.

That doesn’t sound like a less than mediocre program.

The perception of Pitt’s bball program shouldn’t be changed by anyone that went to Pitt from 2000 onwards by one bad season in 18 years (almost 2 decades).

Pitt sees this as a way to stop the bleeding, and right the ship with an experienced and low risk coach. A coach with limited upside but can achieve at least a NIT invite in most years. Plus familiar with area and good character guy who fans will get behind after getting to know him.

I think this sentiment sums up the Pitt hysteria/mindset as well as anything, not that I blame the mindset, but it lacks perspective. Look at what Beilein has done at Michigan this year so far, after falling short so many years. Patience is a virtue, you just have to know when to panic, and when not to. Stallings was obvious- yeah, panic, and everyone except key administrators knew it from day one. Narduzzi? Not even close.

The obvious names are off the board (except maybe for Musselman), or have already been eliminated. So the time has come for a sleeper pick who is totally obscure and will be a complete surprise. Pitt should go to a Plan B scenario that involves a methodical search for a long term solution. Oates may be the guy, or someone similar. They should also begin looking at assistant coaches from winning programs, or maybe an NBA assistant. They like to talk things through and very rarely is there complete support on anything. Paralysis by analysis.

Top AD’s make their own decisions and then convince the academics to support them. Ours is afraid of her shadow. It’s just inexperience. Not her problem, ours. Our administrators hired her. She needed to have a short top 5 list. The top 5 list should be the top 5 coaches (whether under contract or not) that she is confident in bringing in for her price. Let’s be clear. There is “NOT” a do not exceed price, if you are within 300k per year of budget, you are okay. That too, is higher ed.

A great AD does not look at the top 5 coaches available. They are all available. Why settle? Pitt needs a home run.

Secondly, if it appears that the national and local media is hard on Pitt it is because our ADMINISTRATION and Athletic Department it is because Pitt deserves it, as it has been a laughingstock since the Wanny debacle. This is where all sports come into play. We have nothing to say we do good at, nothing! Our AD is afraid of our football coach. She won’t even tarp the steeler stadium because the head coach doesn’t want to. Open the practices.

Our AD has no plan for a great coach or above average coach. Call Miller and be done with it. This is decision making 101.

Other institutions have figured out that if the academics fully support athletics, athletics will help support and enhance the growth of the university. Pitt doesn’t get it.

Everyone is affected by administrative incompetence Ike. He’s an employee and nothing else.If Pitt’s reputation on the athletic side keeps declining – which it steadily is – he’ll want to be in a stronger program which allocates decent funds to the football program – which sure he isn’t getting at Pitt.

That is plainly obvious by who he’s being forced to hire as staff coaches – basically his friends who have little or no prior success in the position/coordinating coaching they are being hired for.

A new 58 year old journeyman LB coach as a first time ever DC…

A new MAC guy who had a total of one year as a “defensive passing game coordinator” whatever the hell that is…

An new OL coach who’s last team was:

in 2018: 113th in Sacks Allowed with 35 and

in 2017: 127th in Sacks Allowed with 45 (!!!) 45 Ike! – almost dead last in the nation.

These are the low hanging fruit Ike – Pitt doesn’t pay Narduzzi squat for a Power 5 HC and we are one of the worse budgeted P5 schools for staff coaches also. If he sees a better opportunity he’ll grab it.

  98. Reed all that is true and all that may not matter if Narduzzi can win with, I admit, a low low budget. At this point he hasn’t established himself with his players yet and until he does his value may not be all that great.

Narduzzi is practically in the Big Ten right now as he is recruiting against that conference most of the time. Isn’t that the conference many think he will leave PITT for?

Again, it’s just not my style to judge anyone or any coach before I see the person performing the job they were hired to do. Bates is hardly a journeyman after staying with NW for 12 years. They must have liked the man and how he coached. Don’t forget that Narduzzi and Fitzgerald have more in common then there first names. They go back always in their careers. Some of you frown upon familiarity while I think that’s a positive. Not so much nepotism.

I think you get my King Pat reference as it was you and others that coined that nickname for him. Once again indicating to me you really don’t have much love for the coach. The I like Narduzzi BUT continues on.

The one thing I’ve never heard is a realistic way to fix it. It’s pretty easy to complain, or even worse enable the status quo, but realistically how can it be fixed? The BOT changes over every so many years. The institutional culture still carry’s on. This must have been how my Dad felt in the late 30s when they got rid of Jock.
Even the most ardent supporter of Heather must admit she’s really screwed the pooch on this on. If this is a strategy of playing it close to the vest it’s been a disaster. I really hate to say it because I know the flack I will get, and most likely will deserve, ahhhh on second thought I won’t say it, just not the right thing to say.
I believe it has come to the point where you have to ask yourself, should Pitt just give up on sports programs entirely. If you won’t adequately fund them, and give them full support, then why continue to embarrass the university’s national reputation with this farce? I think the question is legit. This half assed approach has to stop, one way or another.

I half enjoyed and half just shook my head when all of us would say, I don’t want this guy or I want that guy, that’s not reality at all. Who in the heck do we think we are dealing with here, picking and choosing a coach when the BB program is such a wreck?

The fact that PITT is not looking in Miller’s direction should wake us all up and realize what we already know. PITT is not interested in dealing with any type of conflict or future turmoil.

Wouldn’t it be prudent that PITT hires a head BB coach that will still be at PITT when the big shoe drops on the NCAA BB scandals and be sure that it will. You don’t want to be hiring another coach in a year or so, there just won’t be any coach around to hire. ike

These are not easy questions, and Pitt is in the same boat, sort of. It is not easy to follow any legend (not saying Dixon is exactly a legend). Most coaches don’t stay for long anymore, and it is hard to sustain any program in basketball when other schools can buy players.

  107. VoR, really? You asked that question. Rollie Massimino was there forever and followed by Wright. If and when he leaves there will be a succession plan. Villanova has won national championships and made themselves relevant. Pitt refuses to make themselves relevant.

@GC – This is the AD’s fault. There are 360 coaches available and we go after CYO coaches and offer big money. Why don’t we go after better coaches? It is because she is not linked with anything that wins. Coaches don’t trust that. Who would buy her vision when she says we want to win championships? She has no proof of doing that.

NC is a perfect example as pointed out. They learned a lesson and changed course. They went after a big name coach and got him with Williams. They will do it when Williams retires. Pitt won’t because they don’t know how.

We will have a CYO coach shortly.

  108. Reed, how about we break both of our glasses in two and swap one side each. My “Narduzzi can do no wrong glasses” and your “Narduzzi can do no right glasses? You know, balance things out just a bit.

Just a btw, I never was so pissed off when PITT didn’t have a kickoff returner back his first year. Dumbest move by a head coach I’ve ever watched.
