Miami Game Day Thread and Predictions

OK guys and gals, here is your place for Pitt -Miami game predictions.  I’ll start.

I’m down here in NC and every year we do a pool for the Thanksgiving weekend Top 25 games.  I picked Pitt to lose tomorrow and my cousins couldn’t believe it… They feel I’m disloyal, but as I said to them ” Hey, I know this team…”

So, on that note I think Miami is in different talent level and that will show as the second half goes on.

Miami 35 – Pitt 17

I’ll be rooting my guts out though…

Although after last week I will say about the same as first down at the 1.
Only our beloved Panthers and hell I want to Boston U.

  2. Still have that feeling….Pitt 27 – Miami 24 w a FG as time runs out. Miami has 3 turnovers as the pressure of being #2 gets to them. Pitt overcomes lack of team speed and line talent with terrific QB play by Pickett. Narduzzi gets no “bad call” chains.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow. Hoping for a little KP magic. 13-9 did in fact happen, so anything is possible.

Fran: I’ll swing by to say hello, but you don’t need to include me in your head count for food and beverage.

He must can his DC and I’d push for a new OC.

He must start Pickett or he can apply to the Toledo Job or whatever MAC program would consider him. As a DC that is…

Happy Thanksgiving Ike. Hope you guys have lots of fun. I’m afraid the Turnover Chain and warmer weather are not going to help us.

  13. Trenches win. To beat the speed you use power and misdirection (trap running game). Our OC must keep their Dl off balance.

Screens on 1st down. Have we seen a screen play this year? A misdirection screen would be great. Float Hall out to the right and TE screen with Clarke and one linemen to the left. Miami is fast and smaller. I go with three TE Bull package and beat them up in the trenches.

D need to shadow their qb with oduwu. Need to tackle to prevent big plays against.

Ok, pitt wins 37-35. Miami pulls a shankapottomous on the final field goal attempt. The pressure of a playoff makes them crack.

Would an undefeated Miami that loses to clemson in ACC championship, thus ending with one loss, qualify them for the playoff with Clempson? Two ACC teams helps Pitt financially. .

I’m afraid the O Line will be over-run once the adrenaline wears off and the Miami linebackers will be filling gaps and easily chasing down our skill guys. Will Jester actually “run” a route today. He’s got the gifts, does he have the heart? IF he cares, he would b hard to handle for any D Back out there. Would also like to see us accidentally throw to one of the tight ends – even though Watson won’t call for it, Kenny could say (after a completion) “Sorry Coach, I didn’t mean to….but he was wide open. It won’t happen again”…..

Pitt athletic department really needs to decide about sports. Either put more resources or go to no-scholarships division of college athletics because then there would be no problem in losing ACC funds. Schedule Ivy league teams. Otherwise we can expect more embarrassing 4-8 FB seasons not to mention attendance problems and the other sports. Maybe rent the Pete to an NBA franchise.

  46. Ike, I love your how positive you are but they are stride for side on the sideline. QB throws the ball to the middle of the field it’s game over. I would much rather have the corner on the middle side of the field as opposed to the outside when we aren’t providing over the top help because that gives the WR leverage and space to run if the ball is thrown correctly.

But let’s be clear…this team should be going to a bowl this year. It proved at UNC, VT, Miami that it had the talent.

Now it’s up to the Head Coach to learn from his mistakes and take the team further.

I apologize about sounding negative. I am elated at what they showed today. But I am also frustrated by what could’ve been. And I think because of how the season played out we lost a recruit or two because of it.

David, I would agree however with a new QB at the helm and the fact they are playing new DL, DBs, and LBs, if we qualify via APR and teams not enough teams qualifying via 6 wins I hope we play as Pickett lost his redshirt. Can’t help but think how good this team could be right now if he had made the move to Pickett right away… That kid could be the lightning in a bottle that Pitt fans yearn for… What a gutsy performance… And the rest of the gang is (up to) 12 games more experienced heading into next year….. The coaches did a great job this week. The defense was great with Zeise, Hendrix & Maddox. Whitehead could have played better. The O-line was quite good too. Ollison was very good and Weah made enough plays too. And of course Pickett running over guys and zipping passes…

  69. This from CBS Sports.

Kenny Pickett is the future at quarterback for Pitt: Beating Miami provides an immediate boost to an otherwise disappointing season. However, the long-term thing Panthers fans should really feel good about is Pickett. The freshman was solid in his first start with 193 yards on 18-of-29 passing with a touchdown, plus 60 yards rushing and another two touchdowns. He showed excellent poise and decision-making, plus provided some beautiful passes that should make this coaching staff excited about the future of the offense. It’s been a revolving door at quarterback for Pitt over the course of the last few months, but Pickett should have an early lead on that race going into next season.

    1. Ike,

So what if he wasn’t ready at the beginning of the season? Once they blew his redshirt he needed to see more playing time.

Syracuse/UNC/VT – all could have been wins. Even without todays win you win 2 of the 3 I just listed, you go to a bowl.

Granted most of us critics would be griping about a middling bowl, but you know what? All the coaches will tell you that extra practice time is invaluable.

So I don’t think the readiness at the beginning of the season is as important as what Reed said earlier about Nard-dogs risk averse coaching style on offense.

  78. Said to my brother (another Pitt alumni who was at the game). I want to be happy and I want to celebrate this win.

But honestly, look at me 10/11 years ago in 2007 when a very bad Pitt team played their hearts out and beat a then #2 WVU team one win away from a BCS championship.

I said to him back then I was nothing but elated…I saw hope of better things to come. I said granted I am older today but it’s not age that has made me cynical. It is over the last decade being sold a fake bill of goods from a incompetent program that believes they can recycle the same tired line “we are here to win ACC championships!”

Fast forward to today. I am happy for our players…but this win means absolutely nothing from a program standpoint. Just like Clemson did little to move the needle.

The coach is still trying to haggle more money from a cheapskate administration, recruiting is down, attendance is down (and it will only be salved over next year because of PSU home game).

What I will say is this…I will rewatch the game to see how the student athletes played with all of their heart out.

But until this program commits to excellence…this win is nothing more than a “Hey we are gonna let you kick the ball this time Charlie Brown! Trust us.”

BS…I still say next year is 5-7/6-6 at best.

God I hate the way I feel nowadays…I really remember how that 13-9 made me feel. It sucks being this way.

Pitts early turnovers (3 fumbles with two recovered by Miami) could have resulted in a big Miami lead but Pitt’s D really played well.

There were only two or three play calls by our OC that really didn’t fit, otherwise I thought that Watson called a solid game. The play calling kept the Miami D off balance.

Same with the DC. Only a couple of bad packages/schemes most notably the series that Miami scored the second TD on.

I like having a QB that can run.

On Miami’s onside kick I thought that Whitehead should have let it go out of bounds. That kick had a ton of velocity on it.

I was surprised that Miami only rushed 4 on the vast majority of downs and rarely moved the four down lineman around or ran any stunts. I thought that they’d try and get in Pickets head more.

I thought that Miamis’ linebackers looked fast and were all good tacklers

Ziese made a couple of really nice tackles and one pass breakup that was key.

Maddox has a ton of guts and made some good plays.

Miami doesn’t loose many key guys and will be good next year.. Pitt will also be good next year.

  81. Just back from game. Couple things:

Miami, much like Clemson last year was running thru the raindrops. That qb has been bad most of the year. Quite frankly, they only played 2 good games, and made rep pounding a highly overrated Notre Dame.

This was a really enjoyable game. That defense was the best we’ve seen in several years. They were in the qbs face all game. And Zeise, well that is by far the best he ever played.

TV must give a very different view. D backs played pretty good. Coverage was decent. Pressure had a lot to do with that kids throws. Unless you are a fan of the U and have orange and green glasses on, you must admit they got their butts handed to them. And that’s a fact.

Give credit where it’s due, the coaches did a really nice job, and Duzzer keeping them up and ready to play after last weeks debacle was, simply, a great job.

    Great tribute to Ironhead, classy.

I predicted 5-7 at start of season. This was infuriating. Overall really pissed, but anyone who can’t take pure joy in this win is not a fan.

Pickett, well, he is really a tuff, hard nosed played. Ran over a couple Canes, and showed no fear. Hope you could see that on the tube!

I can’t do that. I think you are more than entitled to feel the way you do. But I am not going to subscribe to it.

I and many other fans are now in the mindset of until you show me a commitment to winning I will not pretend to give you the benefit of the doubt.

In talking with my brother today I do not think my expectations are unrealistic (and he agreed). My expectations are within the top 25 every 3 years and a top 10 every 5 – 6 years.

and given my age 1 January 1 bowl every decade…so I imagine I would get to see 2 maybe 3 if I am lucky.

Perhaps unprecedented in and of themselves…but they only equal to 1 win. They don’t give you any more weight on a Win against a #2 team when you are 5-7 overall. Unless this builds the program it’s the same thing you will tell me when they win against a top 2 team 10 years from now.

No sense in looking in the past that was the Heather Lyke years. Let’s enjoy here and now in the Kaiser Soze years…

DavidD and UPitt, I realize that history is on your side as far as Pitt not really accruing any long term benefit from this game, but I ain’t buying it. Not this time. Never that I can recall has Pitt had a legitimate QB coming back to start the next year after these big games, and hopefully Watson/Narduzzi ĺearned a valuable lesson in coaching with balls (to win, not not to lose). So I’m back on the optimism train for next year. HAIL TO PITT !

Upittbaseball and just about all of us were absolutely right about the poor coaching. I saw it mainly on the offensive side; hurting us all year with the poor performance by Watson. Misplaying personnel, and just being stupid.

I’m convinced Narduzzi is going easy on his people. He is learning to be a manager and not embarrass his coaches in public as he did with Chaney. Plus he doesn’t need the aggravation of replacing coordinators every year. He will be more involved with the offense next year. Narduzzi is risking his future if he lets Watson loose.

I don’t think Maddox was stride for stride with his receiver on a number of those plays. If Rozier makes better passes it would be a different game. Reality and result are different things. And my praise of SW today does not change my opinion of him. This team should be 8-4 now and I blame SW for at least 1.5 to 2 of those losses and Conklin for the fraction left over.

Celebrate the win as a win (and a great win) but PITT is not going bowling on APR.

After last Saturday (11/19), there was 70 teams out of a total of 78 needed to fill bowl spots. There was another 21 teams (22 if you count Ole’ Miss with post season bowl ban) with 5 wins. PITT is now 14’th on the APR 5 win ranking.

IMO, there will be at least four 6 win teams that sit at home this coming holiday season.

  110. First, let me say that I think this was a great, great win for the team. Keeps everyone on a positive note going into next season.

Finding a playmaker (a quarterback, no less) means no team will have a safe win against the Panthers next year. Should mean better recruiting, better buzz and, as someone noted above, for the first time coming off a trademark Pitt upset of a top five team, a settled and exciting lineup for the following year….

But I think UPitt reminds us that there are still question marks… Even after wins, you have to look deep and see what needs to be better. In the Army (my old employer), brigade sized units fought mini wars at the National Training Center. The after action review of the top staff was absolutely BRUTAL (I was privileged to see it once upon a time)… Officers who were gods in their local bases were forced to check egos at the door and have every major tactic reviewed… It made them better (thank God). It is fair to question if PN uses the best resources he has available at the best time.

It is fair to question if his game day decision making needs improvement. It is fair to ask if he has a streak of nepotism in coaching hires… But it is also fair to recognize that they guy brings the fire and brings it well on game day.. And his team responds well to the fire… He has earned a good, long stay at Pitt – let’s help him figure out how to be better….

Make no mistake Watson is the weak link in the chain of coaches.

Narduzzi listens to the negative fan remarks. But why did Pickett spent the season with a piece of paper running the scout teams? Little or no 1 or 2 team reps. Narduzzzi has the whole team to worry about and the 85 to 100 players. That’s his excuse.

    Lopes recovery after Weah fumble.

The first down for PITT with only a minute of two to go in the first quarter.

Aaron Matthews block to keep the drive alive on Henderson’s end around when he jumped over a tackler to get there.

Thought the Maddox possible interception and then it went through his hands would kill PITT’s chances of a win..
    +++++++++++++++

“ ‘All right. Yes, sir. You call the shots. You’re running the show.’ ”

Next thing anyone knew, Pickett was running 22 yards for his second touchdown of the game, a 24-7 lead and an all-but-certain victory.

Pitt left tackle Brian O’Neill was impressed by Pickett’s composure and toughness in his first college start, how he would take a hit and come back to the huddle to tell his teammates it was nothing.

“He’s a gamer,” O’Neill said. “We saw for the first time how much of a gamer he is.”

I have an unbelievable amount of confidence in myself,” Pickett said. “No matter what field I walk on, I feel I’m the best player there.”

No wonder Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi talked afterward about how he had a feeling the Panthers would need Pickett sometime this season, which is why he didn’t hesitate to pull his redshirt for one play Oct. 7 at Syracuse.

“He’s only going to keep getting better,” Narduzzi said. “Kenny’s got some stuff to him, just throwing the ball, the pocket presence and moxie, that we’ve felt all along.

“That’s why it was so easy to make that decision, because I knew he was going to have to go into a football game for us.”

We won! I predicted Pitt would win today. Who else did that?

I called for Pickett the minute Browne went down. Reed and Upitt did as well. Most wanted Dinucci. Tape doesn’t lie. Best thing about tape is that you can win a game and still find a lot of warts. Presenting the warts is not the end of the world. Covering up the warts is not good.

We will keep getting better. I believe that. We called for playing the young guys and we got to see that these last few games. We now need to get 3-4 4stars to join the ranks.

    Biggest obstacle is the Administration.

Conklin deserves a raise rather getting fired. Duze called it at half-time _ and it is happening today in Pittsburgh. All aspects of the game Pitt DOMINATED. Give coaches a raise. Give players lots of credit for hanging tough and getting better the last month.

Having a QB who can make plays on more than 1-2 drives a game and doesn’t kill the offense multiple drives a game with WTF plays covers up a lot of weaknesses and makes strengths even stronger. Can turn bad teams into average teams, average teams into good ones, good ones into conference championship contenders.

I boldly predict that with Pickett RUNNING WILD and slinging it with some AUTHORITY, and a defense that if it keeps improving should actually FINALLY be good next year, Pitt will 2 of 3 vs PSU, UCF, and ND, and will FINALLY be a real contender to win the Coastal. This is the first time in a long time I say “wait til next year” without feeling like Charlie Brown. And especially wait til 2019…

I was at the game and SO happy we won. That said.. ike says it’s great we beat 3 top 10 teams- but we also lost to bad teams. Lose to Clemson, PSU and Miami and beat UNC, Va Tech TWICE over the last 2 seasons and Syracuse and GT and we have a better overall record by 3 games.

No doubt this team can “get up” twice a year. Good teams are consistent.

This team was a typical Pitt team- there were highs and lows- but you have to love that the players never quit. I was afraid that Narduzzi might lose them with some of the head-scratching bad moves (personnel decisions, bad play-calling, etc), but give the young men credit for their determination and spirit. They know what goes on behind the scenes in practice, so Duzz must be doing something right. Let’s enjoy the win. I’m not sure how much of a recruiting boost we get from this- perhaps seeing that we finally have a QB will convince some kids to come here for a chance at early playing time vs. going to a bigger-named school and sit for 2 or 3 years. I didn’t see how the stadium came across on TV today, but I hope the enthusiasm of the fans came through. The hard-core dedicated fans showed up AND STAYED through the whole game. It was a nice change. Maybe we can hope that good feeling stays with all of them through to next year. H2P!

Gotta give the team credit. And as much as I’ve bashed Watson, I told my son at halftime – “where the hell has this creativity been all year?” He said, “It was probably there we just didn’t have a quarterback that could execute”…maybe right.

Make no mistake, a good QB that makes plays and fires up the defense. They know a 3 and out stand means something, They know they need to get him the ball back. They didn’t have that all year.

  146. Jay91, I was just gonna say, we lose to a MAC team next game after “shocking the world” with 13-9. This win is no guarantee that the program is going to magically dominate the ACC. BUT Pitt did trend up after 13-9 and we had a run of some good seasons — the best run in my lifetime, and the best since the start of the 80s. I pray that this win leads to some good seasons, too, hopefully a little better than our peak after 13-9 (which was losing in that de facto big east championship game against Cincy).

I don’t want to be Debbie Downer like others, but I agree with those saying that we lose against a better QB. But that said, the defense has improved from the OSU disaster. I don’t think we’d slow OSU down much if we played again now, but I think we’d do better. Maddox is not Revis, but his replacement next year will have big shoes to fill.

I hope not and don’t think so, but you never know … if it does, maybe he can play it like Jamie Dixon and use threats of leaving to pump more money into the program.

Whoever the fan was that gave Maddox that homemade turnover chain deserve major props. The players had a lot of fun with it, that was evident. Maybe we don’t have as many fans as the major big ten of SEC state schools, but we have good fans.

The later Harris and Stache years were “well we can’t beat the big teams though”, we’ve been mediocre at best and at times much worse otherwise dating back to Sherrill, and unless you are in your 90’s or 100’s and remember the Warner/Sutherland eras, Pitt has been a top 10 FB program for about an 8 year stretch, 30+ years ago. ( I know a lot of you guys were students/fans during that time, I’m envious of the high and can certainly understand the low, Bball being a similar experience for me, minus the final fours and NC)

There was never a reason to play Pickett this year, and that being your go to when down 2 QB’s, is one of many bone-headed decisions by Duzz. You can’t clamor about how risk adverse someone is, then try to pile on afterwards though. If he played well, why wasn’t he in there to begin with, if he doesn’t you tanked the season by playing a FR who wasn’t ready. The gain to be had is, he played well but we only won 5 games???

I only have 2 Pitt friends, a father and son I have known for a long time, so in many ways POV and the Blather and to a lesser extent dokish’s site and cardiac hill, are where I have to go for Pitt family. So in hoping to find some excitement in a great win with my “Pitt fam”, I find a thread, not really surprisingly, hi-jacked and dictated by negatively. I can’t even fathom any other fan base of any other team, pro or college, where the conversation is driven after a in over a top team, by negativity. And really, the backing behind that being “we could have won 7-8 games”? Well, 7-8 games wasn’t enough, and our last coach didn’t have a personality….just gets old. WE BEAT THE #2 TEAM, AGAIN! What fan is going to take the evening complaining about that!?!?!? Valid points or not, I have never known any fan base that was complaining after a loss of this magnitude, and I realize most of you are not, but the conversation being dictated in that fashion is the same thing.

I love Chas, Reed, Anson…even grown to “know” emel, ike, fran, lastof, tossin’thabeets, wbb, dan72 not meaning to pick or miss anyone, just the one’s that came to mind I could think of. Just tired of things being dictated so much by a minority, and there is absolutely no reason for negativity of this win. Did it save Duzz’s job? no Have we had several years of disappointment? no could it positively impact recruiting? yes Did we just pull a great upset? yes

Should be a day we all feel great about, but you wouldn’t know it from this thread.

You burn your top Qb prospects RS over the BS in the syracuse game, he’s got to be your guy moving forward. No other logic really, you were so unprepared, that was your deciscion, or you were wrong about his capabilities now. I have all kinds of negative things I could say, I just can’t wrap my head around a win of this magnitude but everything being so negative. Who here is upset that we knocked off the 10-0, #2 team in the country? Nobody should be, so why such a negative thread? If your HS went 4-5 but made the playoffs and knocked off the #1 team, would that be cause for excitement? If the Steelers were 5-9, but beat the 15-0 Pats in the last game of the year, would people be upset they beat the Pats? So, don’t know why there would be a negatively driven thread in this instance.

          2. Not telling anyone to do anything. Pointing out a handful of a much larger number of shortcomings Narduzzi has is confirming there is a lot to be unhappy about. If I was going to dictate when people should and shouldn’t do anything, I probably wouldn’t wait several years to begin to do so. I brought up my personal opinion about not liking bashing the team you root for after a big win, on a team fan site, and the possibility that others may feel the same way. You go to the Pen’s parade to celebrate the team right? So,if you showed up but everyone is complaining about how much the team sucked at times, it’s not enjoyable. Same feeling here and elsewhere at times, and after a big win fans are looking for someplace to share in the victory. I didn’t watch the recap of the 2017 playoffs to see what the Pens effed up, I watched to see the accomplishments. Same principle that I as a long time reader do not enjoy, which others may agree with. Sorry if you felt like I had personally attacked you or anyone else, def was not the case. Opining for the first time after several years of following, about how a big win should be cause for celebration at least in the moment, is in no way being sanctimonious though.

Maybe we never get to experience KP if Pitt coaches don’t give him his shot. Rumors of him leaving seem very plausible….considering. Everyone can pick and choose areas to critique this Pitt program, any teams not undefeated give that opportunity, but the biggest key to success for PN will be recruiting then UTILIZING that talent properly.

As much as I tend to view with a glass half full perspective, the use of Browne over Dinucci then over Pickett for too many games deserves criticism. Add to that Hall over QO in ball control situations and the over-use of QH at WR where he has been fairly ineffective, there is plenty to question as Reed and others have said for months. That said, yesterday was/is huge as it seems we have the most critical position settled for a few years. Learn from this PN, get your recruiting issues resolved and the future is bright. —Nice use of Sweet Caroline by Pitt yesterday – played it, or part of it, maybe 3 times and it worked each time…

  176. tedsptman….right on brother. Everyone needs to stop whining about complaining. Stop whining about cheerleading. Just stop whining about others, express your opinion, debate facts and have fun. We really don’t need a lecture from a Negative Nancy or Positive Polly on here about how we “should” react to anything. A big family with lots of opinions and pretty good football knowledge. I love the POV and rely on it daily. The only aggravating thing is the once every three days “lecture” from someone that wants to tell everyone else how to think. We’re already the best Pitt blog by FAR, let’s keep it that way..

Madden was tweeting that this win will have no impact on the program. Disagree. Good for recruiting, good for morale and confidence in the off-season.

      1. Hey, I’m fat, dumb & irrelevant & I don’t appreciate that you lumped all of us fat, dumb & irrelevant people into the same class as Madden. He is in a special class of fat, dumb & irrelevant people.

  178. Just watched the game again. Pitt wanted to win it’s 5th game more than Miami wanted to go undefeated. And the coaches played to win. So much fun. Proud of the team. Proud of my school.

  179. Looking forward to the POV road trip to North Carolina with Bernie’s friends Frank and Greg next year. Hope Annie makes it too. Bernie, we should rent a beach house around the game. Extra time in a GREAT part of the country.

  180. After watching yesterday’s a$$ whooping our boys administered to Thug U I have to admit I believe the coaches have the program in the right direction… they don’t need my negative input or berating comments… doesn’t help the cause or the atmosphere or change coaching- do you think HCPC took all of the advice and criticism and put it into play once he got to Madison and he is no longer a .500 coach because of the Blather…

I see a need to be more like Ike….

  181. Herman is getting what he deserves, after today’s 69-10 beatdown by Oregon…the Beav’s finished 1 win and 10 losses. Might be the worst FCS P5 team. ESPN should team them up against Kansas, to determine that.

  183. Herman needs to get a lot more to get hat he deserves.

I would pay a lot to KNOW his and the entire story with him at Pitt. I have to believe there was unethical if not illegal actions by him and others.

      1. And the extra few months on the payroll, whatever the cost was, could not have been worth it and just pisses me off. F him from part of the Pitt Noise.

None of the pettiness or discord on this blog bothers me at all, but if someone here types anything in support of Herman, I go nuclear.

  184. Well, there are 80 teams with 6+ wins. Bowls only need 78. Two 6 wins teams are sitting at home this bowl season. Ole’ Miss is one of those 2 teams because they self imposed a bowl ban for this year.

There is still a chance for 3 additional 6 win teams. Florida State (5-6) is playing La. – Monroe (4-7), La. – Lafayette (5-6) is playing App State (7-4) & New Mexico State (5-6) is playing South Alabama (4-7) next weekend (Championship Week).

PITT finished with a APR of 976 (43’rd). Of the 42 with a higher APR, 25 had 6+ wins, 9 had 8+ losses, 6 had 5 wins (like PITT). Ga, Tech (5-6) & Florida (4-7) are special cases. Both had cancelled hurricane games – Ga. Tech against Central Florida (11 – 0) & Florida against FCS Northern Colorado. So both of them would have at a minimum 5 wins with Ga Tech a chance at 6 wins.

  185. Have a season’s end article in draft and that will be it for some time for me on here.

The offer to publish guest articles stands…if you want to keep conversations going you need to write stuff, pretty simple.
