POV Roundtable Call-in; 11-8-17

We will have our 9pm Roundtable discussion this evening as usual – but since we have already discussed the last game we played be prepared to bring items and subjects of your own to the table.  Login directions at the end of this article.

Here is a contest of some sort sent to The POV from Allstate:

Comment: Allstate Provides Fans with Fun Tailgate Experience and a Chance to Win a Trip to the National Title Game

WHAT: The Allstate Tailgate Tour, an interactive fan experience visiting college football stadiums across the country, is heading to Pitt this week as the Panthers takes on the UNC Tar Heels on Thursday, November 9, 2017.

At the tailgate, fans can take part in a variety of family-friendly games, relax in the lounge area and enter an on-site sweepstakes to win a replica helmet from the home team.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit is helping Allstate bring fans together off the field for the sake of good through Allstate’s #sweettalk initiative. Throughout the season, fans are encouraged to join the conversation by using #sweettalk to say something nice about an opponent for a chance to get a shout-out from Herbstreit himself. At the tailgate, fans can also participate in the #sweettalk video confessional for that same chance.

Everyone who trades smack talk for sweet talk via the video confessional or on social media using both #sweettalk and #sweepstakes will be entered for a chance to win a trip to the National Championship!

WHERE: Heinz Field (Art Rooney Ave)

Here is a great opportunity to watch the Virginia Tech game with some new Pitt fans.  My good friend Bob Jefferies who runs the great “Real Pitt Football Talk” Facebook group has arranged with Archies Tavern on the Southside to have a VT Game Watch Day.

Bob

As it stands that is the one weekend I have free and I may just drive up for that as I can’t make either tomorrow’s NC game or the Miami game.  So – I’ll keep you all updated and maybe we’ll have a POV contingent there also…

Either way if you are on Facebook please check out that group of knowledgeable Pitt fans – Bob writes great posts even a few times a day…and I have been bugging him to drop us and article or two about his own experiences with past Pitt football and our players.

Saw the Larry Fitzgerald Football Life. Tremendous. Appearances by Walt Harris, Rod Rutherford, and he wears a Pitt shirt throughout.

  2. The Archie’s idea does sounds pretty cool. The one thing I cannot tolerate is people around me not paying attention to the game. I’ll probably be huddled in my game-room muddering to myself and avoiding my good friends comments like: “This team stinks” after the very first play.

  3. P-G article about attendance problems…

As usual, Lyke was in the room for that quick but not-so-subtle callout. She also spoke Monday at the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club in Canton, Ohio, where she grew up.

According to The Repository newspaper in Canton, she again talked of trying to build a championship culture at Pitt and called a contract proposal to renew the football series with Penn State after 2019 “very close to being done and being sent to Penn State.” She also gave a glimpse into some possible plans for altering the football environment.

Play WVU and be done with it. I am just plain worn out from the PSU administration and fans.

NFL NETWORK’S A FOOTBALL LIFE TO FEATURE PRO BOWL WIDE RECEIVER LARRY FITZGERALD

‘Larry Fitzgerald: A Football Life’ Premieres Friday, November 10 at 9:00 PM ET

“Time is the most valuable asset we all have.” – Larry Fitzgerald

NFL Network’s Emmy-nominated series A Football Life continues Friday, November 10 at 9:00 PM ET with a profile of Arizona Cardinals 10-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. The one-hour show produced by NFL Films features sit-down interviews with Fitzgerald, current teammates Carson Palmer and David Johnson, former teammates Kurt Warner and Adrian Wilson, Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and more.

Each episode of A Football Life – as well as all NFL Network programming – is streamed live on smartphones through NFL Mobile from Verizon, and via Watch NFL Network on tablet (NFL Mobile, Watch NFL Network and NFL on Windows 10 apps), PC (NFL.com/watch), Xbox One and Xbox 360 (NFL on Xbox app) and other connected TV devices (NFL app on Apple TV, PlayStation 4, Android TV and Amazon Fire TV).

In life and on the football field, Larry Fitzgerald has accomplished nearly everything. Fitzgerald has been selected to 10 Pro Bowls, and with more than 1100 receptions he ranks third on the NFL’s all-time list. Yet the one thing on his list he hasn’t checked off is holding the Lombardi Trophy. Larry Fitzgerald: A Football Life examines Fitzgerald’s impact on and off the field during his 14-year career and his remarkable football life.

Among the topics discussed in Larry Fitzgerald: A Football Life are:

Larry’s struggle with his grades and his time at Valley Forge Military Academy that fueled his motivation to make it to college and the NFL
His time serving as a ball boy for the Minnesota Vikings as a teenager and learning from the likes of Randy Moss and Hall of Famer Cris Carter
How he coped with the death of his mother while he was a student at the University of Pittsburgh and how he honors her today
His love of traveling and visiting 96 countries
His incredible playoff run leading to Super Bowl XLIII
Reinventing himself as a slot receiver after Bruce Arians became the Cardinals head coach
How his philanthropic work earned him the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award following the 2016 season

    Emmy-nominated actor Josh Charles narrates.

Larry Fitzgerald: A Football Life includes interviews with the following people and more:

    Larry Fitzgerald
    Larry Fitzgerald Sr. – Father
Ron Wolfley – Cardinals radio analyst
Steve Keim – Cardinals general manager
    Carson Palmer – Cardinals quarterback

Mark Dalton – Cardinals Senior Vice President, Media Relations

Provided below are some select quotes from Larry Fitzgerald: A Football Life:

    • “Larry is living legend.” – Ron Wolfley

    • “He’s not your 2017 superstar…He’s a throwback; the way he carries himself and the way he acts, the teammate that he is.” – Carson Palmer

    • “He’s got the whole 180. He sees everything. And he might be the most thoughtful person I have ever met.” – Mark Dalton

    • “He’s in the Matrix. Nobody is stopping him right now.” – Ike Taylor

    • “The thing I appreciated about him the most was after that first conversation when he told me ‘I’m good enough Kurt,’ that he spent the rest of his career looking to be the best in everything that he did.” – Kurt Warner

    • “I don’t know of a professional athlete that has devoted so much time and effort to other people and causes as Larry Fitzgerald.” – John McCain

    • “I can’t tell you how gratifying it’s been over all these years walking through airports or somewhere shopping and somebody tell you that your son really touched them or what a great person he is.” – Larry Fitzgerald Sr.

  6. Ike: I’ve been reading but not posting much. Busy week. But not so busy to prevent me from making the five hour drive to see you and the rest of the POVerts tomorrow. Anyone coming from a further distance? I do have 2 extra seats on the 50 if anyone is in need.

  7. And on the topic of Larry Fitzgerald….my favorite Pitt Panther of all time. A first ballot NFL Hall of Famer, and a Hall of Fame human being. The theft of his Heisman by Jason White disturbs me to this day.

  10. Interesting. Last night I attended a town forum sponsored by the PG and PNC at The Heinz History center. It’s subject was where Pittsburgh would be in 2025. Had banker, county exec, tech people. Reason this is interesting is that in the past 12 days there have been over 10 billion in new projects. They also said by 2025 Pittsburgh would be in the top 3 metro areas for youngest populations as well as the no. 1 for best educated!! All remarked what a major change this was from 10 yrs ago when we were the second oldest pop.
Also, Pittsburgh is taking over the tech. capital from NY and Boston. Won’t compete with Silicon Valley for software tech, but more hardware and large tech.( single big tech, whatever that is). Crushing the south in this amount of money and companies coming in. Reason companies are moving here is that we contracted so much over the past 3 decades we can accommodate the crush of people better than any metro area.
Now, as it relates to Pitt, they raved about the role Pitt and CMU play. They spent considerable time talking about transportation and infrastructure improvements and plans, and also that the room exists in the city to build, over 13000 vacant plots.
For those of you who have moved away, and for even me, a resident, it was quite the eye opener. Also how the city is unique because it does not fit into any specific geographic region, not east, not mid west etc. Tech companies love this apparently.
As this demographic changes so will the university. Really, really, interesting stuff on the city and university’s future.

    1. this is all very good … and is consistent to a handful of articles I have read over the past several months, including the importance that Pitt and CMU play in Pgh’s future.

Not sure how big an impact it will have on Pitt athletics but it certainly can’t hurt
