POV Game Day Thread – Syracuse

As the 6th game of the season this game will mean a lot toward our fan’s feelings about how the second half of the schedule will go.

Win and we jump up in the ACC Coastal Division rankings with a 1-1 conference record and sit at 3-3 even steven… Lose and we probably drop to the bottom of the division and have a 2-4 mark overall.  Syracuse has a mirror 0-1 conference record and a same 2-3 overall.

So, the game’s on at 12:30 today up in the Dome, we set our predictions out yesterday and we’ll see how things shake out.  I will say this though – if our line play doesn’t improve dramatically we are in for a long day, especially if our DEs can’t contain their excellent passing and running QB.

Here is an Orange look at five reasons either team can win and remember this is their homecoming game. This one scares me:

  2. Isneal wil own him today.

Browne will probably not finish the game. No mobility and the Defense will be on him.

  3. Here’s a quote from Reed in yesterday’s article that I mush have glossed over

“It was easy to produce a great offensive line when he had all those starting OL studs that Chryst recruited. But now he’s having to deal with a mixture of Narduzzi’s OL recruits (and transfers) also in the rotations and it isn’t working out so well.”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

He was speaking of John Peterson of course but I don’t get the reference about Chryst recruits. O’Neill, Officer, Bookser, Herndon, JJS, Dintino, which pretty much make up this O-Line this year are all Lumpy’s recruits. I thought Paul only recruited stud O-Lineman?

PITT only lost two O lineman this year and the fact is they were very good. I just don’t buy into all the Chryst magic. Reese and Baker were not that good either. O’Neill was recruited as a TE and stayed there until Narduzzi came on scene.

I also wonder if some of the more dire predictions for today’s game come from people who think Syracuse is really good or PITT is really bad? I’m sure it’s the combination of the two but lots are just way down on PITT this year despite a rugged early season schedule.

We all knew PITT could come in and be sitting at 2-3, this is no big surprise.

I’m not sold on the Syracuse defense, they are banged up as good ole EE mentioned and I do think the PITT O-Line will be able to allow for the run and control the clock.

I look for Whitehead, Lopes and the rushing attack to have big games today. . . . ike

Gold and white unis – at least the pants are gold – if you call that gold.
Ike I think Reed meant Nards recruits and Peterson coaching but he will keep that secret. haha. I am not impressed with Peterson coaching, then again Joe Moore spoiled me. I thought Hueber was a good OL coach, wonder where he is..

  7. Erie Express- better chance of frustration and disappointment? Golf or Pitt football? Toss up.

I missed the prediction post yesterday, so here’s mine:

    Syracuse 38
    Pitt 27

Last I checked, our D is still awful.

  8. Didn’t get my predictions in yesterday…. better late than never. Here they are….Erie Express shoots a 88 today. Big B orders a new sign for Fran’s POV tailgate that says “Pitt Football: Birmingham or Bust.” Dan72 is drunk by halftime. UPitt gets bored watching the game (does he ever actually have time to watch a Pitt game???) and pens email to our AD telling her how much he lykes the midfield logo at Heinz. EMel drinks a case of Fanta thinking incorrectly that it’s PBR. Reed thinks game is in Pittsburgh and gets stuck in I-70 traffic.

Oh, the game prediction??? Dungey throws all over us. Our offense makes a few plays but not enough. Orange 38 Pitt 27.

  10. After reading all of the negativity about Pitt, posted by our two article writers in yesterday’s article, coupled with all of the positivity they wrote about Syracuse, I should predict a score of 110 to 0 with the orange winning.

However, I will guess, and this must sound insanely crazy to them, that Pitt will win 35-34.

  11. That’s hysterical Eric. Your predictions are off the hook.

Hey PittFan28, do you also get a little negative vibe that is supposedly not there? Is the negative vibe real or just in one’s minds eye? . . . . .ike

Oh and BTW, It’s not so much I cannot or will not predict a PITT loss, I just can never imagine a PITT football team not winning the game at hand. Realistic or otherwise. I honestly think PITT can win every game.

Imagine thinking PITT would win AT Clemson last year? Unrealistic right? Stoopid to think they could have won that game, right? See what I mean? . . .. .ike again…

  12. PSN or Cardiac Hill just can’t remember who said that Narduzzi hadn’t spoken to his friend Shafer this past week. I guess Narduzzi figures that he has the Syracuse offense all figured out and doesn’t need any help from his friend Shafer. Well we are going to find out on that count in the next couple of hours.

  13. This is a game where the D staff shows it’s stuff. Pitt db’s have good numbers unlike last year, and Hendrix, Weaver can bring needed heat on the QB. Pitt plays smart and wins. Pitt loses this game, they are in trouble as this is a great barometer of what Pitt really is. This game is where Pitt makes the turn or not. GT game was a season of 8 or 7 wins. This game is a season of 7 wins or 4 wins if they lose. Big game.

  40. Few comments:

First, I actually agree with Upitt regarding Browne’s body language, it would help to have a QB with some spark to him, but he’s a California boy, so the laid back demeanor is what you normally get.

More importantly, I think the first half is actually a very good depiction of the state of the team this year relative to last year, a clearly improved defense and a much weaker offense. It’s nice to see Browne gaining some confidence and making good throws, who knows, maybe he’ll continue to improve as he gets a better feel for the WR’s. Still wonder about our OC.

Oh, and good for the kicker, I thought he was toast after week 1. I’m glad I was wrong.

Every week the same – this coaching staff somehow embarrasses themselves over and over again.
    My God – what a )(&( show.

Can’t wait for the following: 1. Narduzzi’s BS filled presser 2. DiNucci or Browne playing the rest of the year and Pickett never seeing the field again in 2017. Because these coaches are that idiotic.

  106. I agree it was a bad decision to call the time out to put DiNucci back in the game. A complete waste since Browne is likely done for the year and Pickette looks like the only back up Narduzzi wants to insert in the game. With the greater part of the season still ahead of us Pickette will undoubtable be used quite a bit though out this season. Hence there was absolutely no need to burn that time out at that time.

    PITT played a respectable game

Losing Browne? Maybe not the worst thing

Dinucci losing his helmet? Maybe not the worst thing

Weah had the ball stripped from him and you guys can go into denial all you want.

Matthews dropped a ball he should have caught.

The PITT defense represented as well. That was the #5 passing offense in the country.

Here’s one you guys won’t like, Maddox played well today.

AJ Davis looked slow on the few plays he ran with no room provided by the O-Line.

    The O-Line is really terrible.

PITT is not good enough to play sloppy football, still making bad mistakes.

Syracuse had 3 or maybe 4 penalties with 12 men on the field. Bad coaching happens.

Syracuse was the team that 90% of you expected to kick the schitt out of PITT today. After PITT plays them tough??? Syracuse now sucks.

PITT scores and the POV goes silent.

Syracuse scores and the woodwork break wide open.

You run a jet sweep on 3rd and 1? Personal and playing are horrendous. 132. Ike – love your positive attitude. But, beyond a couple kids, (Whitehead, Ford, Weah (maybe)) this team has bottom rung D1 talent. They look soft, slow and unable to block and tackle – It’s BECAUSE they can’t, they aren’t good enough and won’t be. What makes them look even worse is horrendous coaching. Poor preparation, horrible in game management, poor play calling, lack of strength and conditioning, etc. That is the sad and undeniable truth. Someone asked way back earlier, “why does every team on TV seem to have bigger, faster, stronger athletes than Pitt?”….Because they do. We don’t have enough good players and it doesn’t look like we have enough on the way.

    Our coaching is horrible.

The only good thing that the day was that we got to see Kenny Pickett play and we saw what his arm is like on that last pass the only one he’s thrown so far but that was a strike right where it should be and you’re going to see a lot more of him.

This game was really on the coaches…shuffle passes, ill timed jet sweeps, etc (and dont get me started on burning Kenny’s redshirt). Conversions on 3rd down…just 1? Couldnt sustain any drives. The D was on the field for too long.

Our line is horrible. Our RB’s are not very good. And we still have no QB. No leadership.

Our D is o.k (average) and would actually be good if they knew how to tackle. But our D got pushed around too much.

Kicking game is very good though…1 positive.

Transition year yes. But what a fall-off from last year.

I just dont think anyone on the BoT is concerned what this year and another one like this year can do to a program. Football pays the bills and this program is nowhere close to being respectable. Its regressing fast.

How great was Idowu on third down having his back to the QB as Dungy ran for a first and then some. Let’s put to bed being smart in the classroom correlates to the football field.

The coach was a former D1 baseball player I think and he ran the practices like it was life or death. He had me charting every pitch in practice and every at bat for every player. He did deep dives into statistics with ten year olds!!!

The heat was oppressive yet he expected max effort and MAX mental engagement for every minute of every practice. My son improved more in two weeks than he had achieved in the prior three years of little league. In the games, he strategized about pitch count and which pitcher to burn or not burn. He knew (through my charting) which kid could throw a strike and which kid couldn’t.

I realtime during the games he had me pouring through stats to get the best match ups available. I’m not sure our team was the best, but they kicked butt in the tournament. The role of the that guy was pivotal – he made every kid better… He used his brain to find the best match ups. He made in game adjustments that worked. FOR TEN YEAR OLDS – in an unpaid position.

Who can honestly say that Narduzzi and his staff are doing as well. Because he closes practices, on of us have a clue how good or how bad the game preparation is… The in game adjustments are simply not happening.

The Pitt fan base deserves better….

However, I think from the viewpoint of fans, the thought is that someone other than Pickett could have been put in and thereby spared a timeout. Even if MacVittie’s migration down the depth chart was not a secret, he is still on the sidelines with a headset on at times.

    1. The POV community is a disparate group with different perceptions about what the problem is. I for one think that the recruits since PN took over are not the problem. They are young. College football is mainly about seniors (and quarterbacks and PN did not get recruit a good one his first two years (first year there weren’t any available when he came on the scene). We have so few seniors so PN is at a huge disadvantage. But what I just said is about being good. A college team without seniors can be mediocre especially with good recruits. But Pitt stinks. And the reason it stinks is because of the coaching staff. I was blinded to this truth by our success the last two years. Now I can see clearly. If you don’t have seniors and you have bad coaching your team will be less than mediocre. Syracuse is not good and we could not beat them. Reason: Bad coaching. Really bad coaching. Maybe next year we can be mediocre again. Can’t wait. Not.

  174. We are being outscored 91-53 in the second half of games this year. Is it the lack of, or ineffective, halftime adjustments by coaching staff? Is it the S&C? Is it just that the team is young and doesn’t know how to finish? Is it lack of leadership? I’m guessing all of the above.

Narduzzi is in his third season. Narduzzi could have recruited over any of these guys by now. However he has elected to retain them, in some cases find new positions for them, coach them and play them. Besides, some of those juniors and seniors are his alone (Edwards, Hendrix and Browne).

Wisconsin plays in the western division of the B1G. At least they play Michigan this season from the East. So they play the 9 game schedule the B1G deals to them.

You do realize that there is a writers poll AND a coaches poll? Wisconsin is actually ranked higher in the coaches poll. If you don’t like that subjectivity, Wisconsin is currently ranked #9 in Sagarin. Pretty much right where they are in the subjective polls.

Pitt just lost to Syracuse and most don’t clearly see another win on their schedule other than UNC. However your hatred of Chryst is sufficient motivation for you to claim that Pitt would finish 6-6 in the B1G? Pitt almost lost to YSU at home. Their one convincing win was against Rice who lost 49-12 at home to Army today.

  194. Yesterday, there were a few defenders of Chryst’s recruiting and critics of Narduzzi recruiting.

Look, I lyke Paul Chryst as he helped clean up some messes at Pitt. But let’s look at the LB-er position – weak at best last year with all Chryst players. This year we have one Narduzzi player who should be an outside backer playing MLB – Chryst left no one to play that position but Wirginis (he having a discipline issue +).

Then you look at the OLB spots – 2 Chryst guys, but one is a walk-on and the other is a converted WR. Again, because Chryst left no one to play the outside backer position.

Narduzzi’s recruits are young and I’m convinced now that his staff can only recruit players that need to develop and mature in the system – thus we’ll start seeing results in year 3 or 4. The LB’s appear to be year 4.

Another thing is talent evaluation – if you recruit a S or CB and move him to LB, which he probably never played, you need years of development. When the previous HC leaves the cupboard bare at that position, it only makes it worse when you under-recruit the position.

Hear me – I did not blame Chryst for all of Pitt’s recruiting woes – but to me, the LB position is a HUGE weak spot on this team and Chryst is part of that problem.

    Fire away!

    1. Yet two of the those 2016 starting LBs were on NFL squads this year.

Look – it is entirely possible that Galambos, Caprara and Bradly were good enough athletes but were handicapped by Narduzzi’s DC Josh Conklin.

The DC has to devise defensive schemes to take best advantage of the personnel – I don’t think that has happened so far under DCJC.

You don’t have to look at only the LBs to see how bad Conklin’s defenses have been, especially over the last two years, so in this case I say it is the Xs and Os rather than the Jimmys and Joes.

      Like

      1. Reed, I have tremendous respect for your analysis but when you include Caprara in your “good enough athletes” analysis you are exhibiting that some short term memory issues. Caprara was a gamer. Played his heart out even when injured. But an “athlete” in the sense you are referring to? I could say the same thing about Galambos but with a little less emphasis because he had somewhat more athleticism. And sure you could show me videos of Caprara successfully blitzing through a gaping hole in the offensive line and it would not change a thing. I don’t agree with UPitt that the recruiting under PN has been substandard. It’s just not good enough to make a young team average let alone a badly coached team good. Pitt next year will be much better. And two years from now it will be still better. But it will never be better than good under this coaching staff. And three years from now? Unless this recruiting class continues 0n its trajectory (I’m OK with class so far but petrified with how it will turn out) we are going to look upon 8 and 5 as the mountain top.

Actually they kept the score closer than all the armchair POVer QB thought they would. Not all but many of you at least. Just like last week when PITT covered the spread and there was still a lot of negativism.

Seems to me that PITT cannot win for losing and the reason is obvious to me. many of you hate Narduzzi. I find myself half defending the guy when I know he lacks the experience that a head coach should have.

Narduzzi and this PITT football team are mirrors of each other, learning on the job.

  207. Ike – I’ll try to answer from my POV. It’s not that we lost lost, but how. Stupid penalties, stupid game management, horrible play calling again (which every announcer pointed out on TV for us in every game but Rice), etc. While I think the defense played better statistically, they again blow it when it counts, penalties, blatant missed tackles all over the field, takes 4 guys to tackle a running back, etc. The offense is putrid.

Finally, I don’t hate Narduzzi – not at all. I had and have high hopes for him. Like his personal style and energy. That’s why I’m so frustrated. I keep wanting to blame the coordinators (who are truly horrible) and cut him some slack. But, as he says, he’s the “CEO” he picked these idiots, he knows the game plans, he kept them around. I want him to be a great coach and I want to give him time – but he has to meet us half way and “do” something tangible with his coaching staff.

I am also frustrated with the Administration and their “front porch” bull*&_$&. They don’t care and you need look no further than the AD hire. Greatest accomplishment is setting up 10 empty tents on the great lawn.

Ike – like I said many times – I just want to be a college football fan. I’m doing my part, buying more tickets than I need, donating, showing up for every game, buying all the gear. What I get in return is NOTHING. That’s why I’m pissed, not because I hate Narduzzi.

  214. Great point EE, nice pickup.

My final words as I’ll go into my Steeler mode now..

I have way too much respect for Reed and all my POV family to get drawn into a battle words. I’m not very often upset or feel insulted by words on this blog. This is my safe place….

  215. Ike – getting drawn in to a battle is the fun part as long as it’s not too personal! IF we all agreed, the POV would suck.

I agree with some of what you said – you picked out the good parts. Maddox not terrible, D played way better (which I said above) UNTIL it mattered, Whitehead is a stud, etc. All true. What we are upset about is that coaching staff won’t allow those few bring spots ruin a good loss. The kids have no swagger or confidence and the coaching deficiencies are clear to them too. They are incompetent and have proven that over and over.

Also agree that the Symonds loss is no big deal. EE- why would Banks come here? Maybe he doesn’t watch the games.

Final question until I move on to next week.

Who’s harder to find….Waldo or Q. Henderson? The magician Watson has made him disappear before our eyes!!

  216. Yesterday I heard PN in the post game that he’s not sure why there are better results when JW is in at RB – “Does the line block harder…?”

I see it purely as an aggressive runner. All of the other RBs don’t aggressively take the ball and hit the hole or bounce to an open location. They look like they are going half speed and then dance to look for an opening. On occasion it results in a solid gain but mainly just a yard or two.

Not so with Whitehead. He is an aggressive runner that has his motor at full speed and overdrive. That’s why he has the better success, not the putrid line.

  217. Pitt it IS – good observation. Do you think practicing next to the Steelers have made our RB’s try to copy Lev Bell style?

    Like

    1. Could be. I think that’s the general style of running in general. Only a few are the battering ram style. I think as young ment they emulate what they see, but the results are not there. That’s also on the RBs coach.

  218. Thank you Lastrowofsection4. My prayers go out to your cousin. Amazing how profound one can be after drinking tons of beers and donating money to a good cause.

This is a nice segway into Pitt donations. I will not contribute a damn cent until Pitt shows me they are serious about athletics…the front porch they talk about.

Here is what will show me some seriousness:
    1. Separate the BoT into 2 committees – one for athletics and one for academics

Have the AD report to the athletic BoT and the Chancellor to the academic
These committees dont need to be 36 members in composition; 5 members will do for each with rotating 2 year terms
Hire a real AD…sorry Heather you dont cut it and Pitt gets what they pay for
Open up the pocket books for recruiting budgets and coaching salaries…again you get what you pay for and college athletics is an arms race
Show me the level of athletic fundraising rising at an exponential rate…thats the primary job of a competent AD…one that doesnt alienate fans and boosters…one that can share/sell a vision for sports excellence.
Show me progress on improving our standings across all programs (we have been ranked in the last 25% consistently); mens soccer and womans volleyball are showing me this can be done
And yes show me a feasibility study for an OCS or multi-purpose recreation center; a venue that can help connect fans and alumni back to campus; a venue that can be used by more than 1 program; think of it as a community center that reaches beyond the conventional thinking of just a house for a team or school
Build some traditions that use sports to connect with the university and Oakland community; traditions help create memorable experiences…those positive experiences result in future donations and supporters
Listen. Listen to what your fans say. Listen to what alumni say. Listen to what boosters say. Listen to what former players say. Listen to what POVers say. Listen to what other successful schools have to say that can balance athletics with academics and avoid scandal. Stop listening to yourselves (BoT).

  219. damn! my numerals for my 10 points somehow didnt post. is now one big paragraph but struggle through it. I think many will agree. If our university isnt serious about winning, about changing the culture, why should we care? Its kind of like chicken or the egg. Do we withhold our donations and support until Pitt proves they are serious? Or do we trust our leaders that things will change? And how long do we give them?

  220. They run like they are a proven commodity. Whitehead runs with reckless abandon. It’s a mindset. He wants to beat a defender, not introduce himself to the defender as he is being ankle tackled. That is the difference between a player and an athlete and why so many call our guys soft.

I have been promoting Banks since day one. You do not turn your back on any 4 star if you are Pitt. Raines and Banks woulddo wonders for this class IF Narduzzi plays them. Play the best athletes coach. These kids are going to make coverage mistakes and learn from them. Let them learn.

BIGGEST scam so far this year is AVONTE MADDOX touching the ball on offense. Being cute and gimmicky is terrible when you don’t have the horses to pull it off.

We are weak on the OL – Find horses or get new ones. We are 6 games in and can’t count on our line to move people. Try the next group or as I say, find new and better ones. Stat.

  221. @Tx – you and i speak the same language and not sure which of us was chicken or egg, but the points are clear.

When you have a strategic plan, you make measurable goals, thus creating accountability. We have Zero accountability in our athletic department and candidly, with executive leadership and the board. Academic ratings decline and athletic performance decline.

Athletic performance drives appllications (it is proven). More applications equals better selection. Better selection equals better academic performance and research. Better research equals more funding and strategic public/private partnership money. More money for researchers equals more giving. Giving occurs when prior students are tied to the university community, not heinz field.

Could go all day long on fixing the problems. Strategy. Ohhh, and none of this was what do we do on 3rd and 4. Two different issues unfortunately intertwined.

  222. quick thoughts:

Watson is really bad and may be the downfall of Narduzzi. You can’t have 4 coordinators in 4 years but how do you continue with this?
impressed with the D. Contained the playground ball pretty well, bonehead penalties enabled drives to continue that were stopped. Some reason for hope.
Why did Hamlin not play until the second half?
Hate to say but Nits probably run the table. Michigan will get rolled, only chance is against OSU, And I think OSU might beat them since it is in the horseshoe and they looked pretty good against an improved Maryland. Game of the season. Either team will kill Wisconsin who has beaten absolutely no one this year. Chryst is the luckiest bastard in the world.
Picket must start every game. DiNucci should never see a snap as a starter unless the true starter is injured.
At some point the receivers need to make a play. Matthews yesterday….
I know this sounds weird but we are kind of spoiled by our “success”. Since the Walt season of 1998, we have never had a season with less than 5 wins, almost 20 years. Many other top programs can’t make that same claim in that same timeframe (PSU, Florida, ND, MSU, Michigan, WVU). Some big names there that had worse seasons than us. Hate to say but it might be our turn for a 4-8 or 3-9 season. Not the end of the world but most of those programs bounced back nicely from the bad season.
PSU won 11 after their 4 win season. Not saying we will, but if next year is more of the same then there are some very serious problems that will need to be addressed.

    1. Pitt’s muckety muck’s have only done something HUGE when the program had sunk to low low levels. As in the Dave Hart, Carl Depasqua era and then again after the JM2 Back to the Future era. They do nothing if Pitt is mediocre, as we have been since Wanny left. They are fine with 6-6 and a Turd Bowl.
They like many fans now, think that is a successful season, getting to a Turd Bowl.

It would have been much better (in the long run) for the program to have sunk to the depths, after Fraud to then get the ‘Cause and Effect’ that would have resulted in the BoT doing something drastic.

  223. The reality of this season’s hardships was not only known but anticipated and the season thus far bears it out. This team lost a lot of capable talent from last year’s team. When you lose that much and have to depend on younger players who do not have experience to pull up the slack it is a tenuis position for sure. It is what it is and the hoping it was going to be better is just that “hoping.” I am looking forward to seeing KP throwing the ball around the rest of the season if the powers that be let him do so. Yes it has a been a brutal season but many of these young players going through this years “grind mill” will be the better for it next year.
