  149. I have watched UPITT complain time and again about the frauds that Pitt hires…whether it be Paul Chryst or Nad-less.

    The thing is UPITT I don’t disagree with you but let’s call a spade a spade. This is and always will be what the University of Pittsburgh is incompetent when it comes to athletics. Look at the hiring record of Athletic directors, head coaches in both major sports.

    I don’t know Heather Lyke but I wasn’t impressed by her credentials…it wasn’t a “big splash” hire. And frankly Pitt can’t make the big splash hire. whether it be funds or the non conducive environment for athletic success. Just won’t happen.

    When they make a foray into the football coaching area and try to hire someone instead of taking a chance on a character issued coach like Holgerson (who did not have head coaching bona fides) they try with a smarmy snake oil salesman Todd Graham (who did have head coaching experience and a track record of leaving in the dead of night). Yep couldn’t hire the guy who had a rowdy rep god forbid it would tarnish that clean Pitt image.

    Let’s face it…the golden years of Pitt in the 21st century was the Chryst years. How sad is that? Good guy, may have been a bit on the boring side but after Graham it was what Pitt needed to stabilize. He wasn’t gonna be great here but then again who will be?

    But then they go out and hire a cheerleader that is a pretender. I hate coaches that thump their chests and say we do what we do…and that is exactly what coach Nadless does.

    I hate to say it’s hopeless but lets Ms. Lyke parts ways with Nad-less after this season. Do you honestly think the next one up will save this mess? Do you actually think the incompetence that is the core capabilities of the Pitt administration will do anything right at this point?

    The thing I love about our fans is that we are Charlie Brown and we always feel that this time finally Lucy (the Pitt sports program) will let us kick the ball…

This scheme has never worked and will never work in the ACC or in any league in which offenses pass the ball more than 20 times per game. If Narduzzi doesn’t see that he should not be the coach. He has expected his assistants to adapt to the reality. He has to do the same.

    I am asking this sincerely after this debacle in year 3 and remembering Majors II (but only barely). The question I have is how can Pitt as a program move forward with this coach?

    I don’t think he gets fired immediately but there is a strong indication this season is going to be south of 6-6. I guess there might be sense that we need to stay the course…but it’s not the offensive impotence that is the problem here.

    It’s the other side of the ball where our Head coach is supposed to be a master sensei. Mr. Miyagi could do a better job with this defense and he has been dead for like 12 years now.

  195. I take everything back on the D improving as the season goes along. They may look better due to the drop in competition, but the line backers and DB’s just can’t get there. Folston, Briggs, Stocker, Iduwu couldn’t start for Duquesne. Forget the red shirt BS. Play everyone. See who has it and who doesn’t. Fire the following: Conklin, Hill, line backer guru, Ol coach, OC and S&C coach. Not really worried about Narduzzi leaving anymore. Hire Canada and and pony up for a big time program.

  199. When we had then at like 3 and 11 early in the 1st, on their own 2, and missed that tackle, the writing was on he wall. Made me think: this is going to be a blowout. How you go for the aggressive tackle there instead of giving up 3 years for the sure tackle…boggling.

    Not sure anyone is going to get the score prediction too close! While I pray for halftime adjustments and holding them to only like 14 more points…it is really hard to imagine. And while I pray for a return to the creative open play making of last year…it is similarly really hard to imagine. Ugh.

Nard comes in with what seemed like a far more aggressive recruiting style and the wind at his back seemingly…and what do we have to show for it? The same middling talent we have gotten for the past 20 years.

    Lets face it, the big 25ish programs get the steak dinner and the rest of us get the scraps and there are no better scraps or worse scraps…there are just scraps.

    Now why would an OCS make sense?
    Number 1 it shows commitment to sports (that would be a huge investment)
    Number 2 it helps everyone connect to the university (easier to connect with things being around campus; memories and a good experience associated with the university results in alumni giving and makes bigger boosters)
    Number 3 it is a source of revenue (not a rental stadium; Pitt controls all the money flow)
    Number 4 it can build a home field advantage (build it smaller, more intimate and intimidating)
    Number 5 it can serve more than athletics and more than 1 program (it can be used 24/7, 365 days a year…think how other programs can use it, intra-murals, the band, concerts…think office space, small business, classrooms, dorms, Pitt museum…think rec center to be used by the entire community and not just for 6 games a year.

    USC has strong reasoning behind their justification to spend $200M on their stadium. They could easily play in a pro stadium but they see major disadvantages. Check out their statement. They’ve run the numbers and determined a good ROI.

    But, Pitt will hop on the Steeler bandwagon when they decide to move to the suburbs in 15 years and build a 60k domed stadium.

    The BoT will only decide to do something when fans stop showing to games and donations dry up. I think they’ve given us enough justification from the last 30 years of incompetence and mediocrity.

    Is an OCS a cure all? No. But you cant tell me Numbers 1- 5 dont make sense. Others schools quote the same thing. And they cant all be blowing smoke up one’s arse.

I posted that Narduzzi was hired as a coach who would move the program to a much higher level and profile, The chancellor was ready to commit funding to build the front porch and enhance the program, Univeristy and image. But when faced with the first real challenge of keeping Canada. Pitt made a big offer for them. When Pitt for many self rationalizing reasons wouldn’t do the obvious and pay up, it was over. I don’t know what Narduzzi is, but without Canada pretty clear he can’t keep up.

  329. In Sicily with the family and didn’t see the game. Lucky me. Was wearing my Pitt gear all week, proudly I might add. My degree is something I will always take great satisfaction in achieving. The game / comments show me however that we will never again be a real football program. That’s not to say I won’t watch and root asa fan and appreciate from time to time like the Clemson game that I attended. But in the end there are way too many Northwestern moments (at that one too) and it just isn’t worth the emotional toil. I would seriously accept not being a Division 1 school and just living with realistic expectations. UHG!

    1)Narduzzi’s defense will never work in NCAA football – if Heather had balls she would tell him change the defense before next year with a new DC or hit the road. Gundy has open practices in spring and fall so shall you. This game made me nostalgic for the blowouts of the 1960’s.

    2) If DiNucci doesn’t start next week, you are fired now Nard. Any stupid person can be stubborn. Only leaders can adapt and change.

    They showed a few plays and then the score board message trying to bribe students with a drink if they stayed. Then they showed about five shots of fans sleeping in the stands.

Continuity is important and last year’s offense was a thing of beauty. Watson’s offense is blah. Defensively some heads have to roll.     Pitt will have a hard time winning because of where they play, if you were a kid would you want to play in maybe a half full stadium? With a crowd that is sleeping? The score along with the circus portrayed on TV is going to do a lot of damage to the program.

    The entire program has been in disarray since Sherrill left from top to bottom and it has been getting killed off by no stability and playing off campus. Heinz sucks there is no college atmosphere at all.

  346. That was the first Pitt game I have attended where I left prior to the end of the game – with ten minutes left, I convinced my wife to head out. I was actually trying to pursuade her after the 1st qtr ended – she refused my offers.

    Our starting DB’s were getting torched by the Pokes 2nd team QB. That did it for me.

ESPN made loads of fun showing 12-15 Pitt fans asleep in the stands (over and over) early 4th quarter and made all kinds of fun of (Heather) our AD trying to bribe students to stay for the 4th quarter with a FREE SODA! Oh boy! Great publicity. Most non Pitt fans will forget the game but Pitt will be forever nationally ridiculed for the other two faux pas’ ….what a disgrace!

Today half time was Disney, figures, i am determined to make a round table some night so I can tell the story of the time I pulled a great face to face punk on Poopy Pants absolutely unintentional. Gotta cheer up this shootshow. I looked at low alchohol supply and went with Cranberry Juice and Jack with a hint of Fruition. For all of our reasonable critiques this game reminded me of two horrors I personally witnessed. As a kid i saw the run the clock ND game, with a neighbor god rest his soul who took me and was a ND fanatic ( God rest Pete – coached Huff with Pete in Little League) and Majors OSU loss where players quit before the game started and OSU fans were complaining that OSU coach (maybe Cooper) wouldn’t let the fourth string QB pass. This game was as bad or worse – Narduzzi Has To Go. Pitt fan since 8, live and die but enough is enough.

  393. The administrators running Pitt athletics have a lot in common with the ownership group running the Pirates. The Pirates haven’t won a playoff series since 1979. Pitt hasn’t won a major bowl game since the 1981 season. Both groups think you can run things on a shoestring budget, sell hope upon hope, and then give you constant spin and excuses for why things never change.

    When it comes to Power 5 football, you get what you pay for. This isn’t the Big East anymore. Pat Narduzzi’s salary ranks 12th in the ACC and his recruiting is in line with his salary. However, I don’t think the answer is handing out more money to the current staff. This spring, Pitt had a chance to take a major step toward upgrading the athletic program with the hire of the new AD. They went for experience, but opted for the cheaper route; getting a little MACtion on the side. I’m not saying Heather Lyke is unqualified for the job, but her task of elevating Pitt football and basketball to national prominence is seemingly impossible. The administration is never going to make the necessary investments to deliver a consistent 10-win program. They are satisfied with 7-5 and a bottom tier bowl game.

    When Pitt had that exhilarating upset in Death Valley last season, many thought the Pitt football program was on the cusp of turning the corner and competing for ACC championships. For fear of Pitt POV retribution, I never wanted to publish what I thought about that game – fool’s gold as Matt Canada’s offense scored 43 and the defense was gifted a couple of bad throws by Watson. That win made people think Narduzzi was the answer and Pitt football was ready for greatness. The recruiting publications and people who cover the sport say otherwise. Another bowl loss to a nondescript program, and I had my doubts. Like the Pirates, the bar had been set so low we cling to hope that somebody can bring the program back. Hope is manifested in a belief that Narduzzi is the guy that will lead this program back to greatness.

    Narduzzi built his reputation on defense. We are in year 3, and color me not impressed. Seems like a career coordinator and not a guy that will transform your middling program desperate for relevancy. The defense is not improving despite getting “his guys” in there. If anything, it is regressing. I want you to look at Narduzzi’s last year with Michigan St. Look at what happened to his vaunted defense against the 3 top teams Michigan St. faced that season with a spread offense…

    Oregon scored 46; Ohio St. scored 49; and Baylor scored 41. He took advantage of some Big 10 programs in a down cycle, but when he played good teams with high powered offenses, his defenses had problems stopping the pass. Pitt is never going to field a defense loaded with 4 and 5 star guys. Maybe this scheme would work at Alabama with superior talent, but it is not going to work in the ACC against teams with equal or better talent. Stubbornly, he stays with the same system and same scheme, not recognizing that it didn’t work.

    Narduzzi is going to become a prisoner to that Clemson win. That win set expectations that are unreasonably high, given the administration’s lack of financial commitment to winning football. These problems are systemic in nature and not the fault of Narduzzi. However, this program is years away and millions of dollars and facilities away from attracting the kind of players needed to compete for ACC championships. Narduzzi’s lone core competency is defense, and I don’t know what recruits are going to want to play in this system that gives up school records weekly. Without a dynamic OC this season, he needs to shore things up pretty quickly or the natives will get restless based on those elevated expectations.

Have never seen a team more unprepared to play football. I remind everyone that the players are young kids, so I really see no benefit of criticizing individual players. There should be an open competition for every position on the defense this week. Find someone, anyone who understands where they are supposed to be on the field. Practice the simple art of TACKLING. PittMan4Ever was correct on Wednesday’s round table. It’s time for Avonte Maddox to ride pine. I drove 5 hours to a Pittsburgh yesterday, and 5 hours home this afternoon.     Total breakdown yesterday. Poor defensive scheme, stubborn Narduzzi. Bad tackling, our D unable to get off the field on 3rd downs, all day long. Key penalties any time our O caught some momentum.

    Just totally out classed.

    I’m jumping on the fire Conklin bandwagon as of today. I was worried about this matchup and my prediction of 49-24 didn’t even approach the bloodbath that could have been if OSU hadn’t taken their foot off the gas in the 2nd half.

    As I see it, the defense needs to be blown up and just start over. I mean all the way back to instructing the troops on basic good tackling technique.

    This team is young & they just met the meat grinder named the OSU Cowboys. Now this morning Pitt looks like a big pile of ground chuck. The question is what are you going to do with all of that young ground chuck?

    One answer I don’t want to hear is “stay the course”, especially on defense. It is not working!

    When you have two non-scholarship players starting on your team, you have a problem. When you have multiple other players starting without substantial other P5 offers, you have a problem. When you have an AD with no legitimate experience, you have a problem. When you had a chance to hire Jim Tressel and you skip, you have a problem. Tressel would bring immediate legitimacy to a program and we had a chance. Hubris@Pitt Administration.

    2.Quick Fixes – Demote Conklin this week. Take Charley Partridge to the booth for DC duties. We will have a better result next week regardless of qb and dc. Narduzzi is at a point where he needs to do something to save his team. Keeping Conklin at DC shows his team that you can stink and I will still play you. That means no competition and his talk of competition at all positions is only reserved for players. That is BS! Why do the kids have to compete and the coaching staff does not? Think about that. That is a CEO move, do it.

    As I put on here before the season, if maddox and briggs are in you defensive backfield in any manner except for a nickel or dime back, just give up as it will be last year re-visited. Yes, I did type that.
    I am trying not to lash out at the AD. At some point, I will and probably soon. Seriously, bribing students to stay at a game. Begging, on national tv? You should be removed for such an embarrassing ploy, but that won’t happen. I was a proponent of Jim Tressel as AD. Open up that checkbook and Pitt gets back to prominence in 3 years or less. Fundraising would go through the roof too! It ain’t just Pellini bringing in the P5 transfers. Kids love “The Vest”. Make a move, now.
    Dinucci cannot be our qb. That is a mistake. You put in the qb that gives you the best chance to win the next game. Browne is still first on that list followed by Pickett. Dinucci doesn’t have it fellas so to me it is between Pickett or Browne. Go with Browne for this last game and if he stay below average, hand it over to Picket against Rice to give him confidence.

I too pushed for Tressel, being a YSU grad and living in the suburbs of Youngstown his hire as president has totally changed YSU, students housing has quadrupled, funding is higher than ever, and sports are overall better than ever. Tressel with Narduzzi would have been a hit, could have had pallini as D.C. (Tressel would have put up the $$). It blows my mind why Pitt continues to talk big and act small. Haywood, Graham, Chryst, now Narduzzi plus don’t forget Dixon and Stallings. The facilities the merchandise all small. I proposed putting up a billboard or two in Youngstown, Akron, Canton, etc to extend the fan base. Northeast Ohio loves football and Ohio St games cost a small fortune-there are thousands of people Pitt can attract with simple marketing-but nope. I go to a store in town ZERO pitt gear, guys I live less than 65 miles from downtown. It’s simply apathy and lack of vision. You have to think big and act big not talk big.

    I have an advantage over each of you today and that is I didn’t watch the game. I read all of your comments objectively.

    First move by a coach that doesn’t want to lose a team is to demote the weakest link, whether it is a player or a coach. All will agree that the weakest link is Conklin right now. Narduzzi needs to demote him now or else all others (players and coaches) think it is not about talent at a position. Coach goes first.

    Second, Maddox and Briggs gotta go. Nickel and dime talent right now, sorry guys.

    Third look at QB. Browne was not the reason we lost this game. You guys need to look at the game. Browne could have thrown 8 TD’s and we would have lost. OKState stopped playing in the 2nd quarter or would have hung 80 on us easy. Why blame the QB? Because we can.

    Football is a game of time, place and circumstance. Pitt’s offense is not drop back 50 times in a game. We were taken out of our offensive gameplan after 10 minutes of the game, so you can’t look at anything to fix offensively because we didn’t get to actually see any because we were so far behind. C’mon fellas, think it through.

    Living down here in New Orleans (LSU country), I would caution making comparisons to LSU. All that supposed talent lost miserably to Miss State yesterday (37-3). The defense, historically the strong point of LSU failed to stop (or slow down) the Miss St offensive plays. LSU’s offensive coordinator, who I believe we all know, called a very vanilla (i.e. boring) offensive plan scoring a whopping 7 points. Needless to say, the negative comments among fans about Canada’s game plan and stubbornness in not adapting to Miss St defensive schemes are pretty nasty.

    My point here is that even the supposedly great recruiting teams and their skilled coaches will have their terrible games on occasion, and the fans will heap scorn on the coaches. It seems even worse when your team was ranked #12 (now dropped to #23). The next two LSU games are against Syracuse and Troy, so with their first two wins at BYU and Tenn-Chattanooga, they will have 4 wins against some pretty weak opponents, and their only competitive game in the first five games resulted in a loss.

    Yes, I guess it’s nice that LSU recruits elite talent, but even with that talent they take some unexpected blowout losses.

  494. I still think we beat GT on Saturday.

    This young Pitt team is learning under fire. They are earning their experience the hard way by getting their a$$es handed to them on Saturday. Things will get better.

    I predicted 7-6 preseason and 2-2 by next Saturday. We’ll see.

    This isn’t all on the players though. The coaching on defense needs an overall.
