Happy 4th of July! Hail to Pitt!

A day for celebration and remembrance of what hard work and sacrifices both our  Citizens and Citizen-Soldiers have made to make and keep the United States of America a free and vibrant democracy.  I appreciate what has taken place before us and before today and with my circle of  family, friends and acquaintances  – including each and every one of you readers – I know we’ll keep the USA on an even keel for centuries to come.

So… If we are remembering stuff,  then take a break from the scrambled eggs, grilled bratwurst and mashed potatoes I know every red-blooded American is eating for their 4th of July meal  (at least that’s what we did at our German Grandma’s house when I was a kid) and take a minute to review some of the past and glorious Big Game victories Pitt has had in the last 19 years…

Let’s time travel back to Walt Harris’s tenure at Pitt and see what he, and our following HCs, have done when faced with Big Games on a national stage.  Here are the matches as determined by me to have the label “Big Games ” which were mostly when our opponents had Top 25 rankings either on the day of the game or at the end of the season (as in lats year’s PSU win).

For a holiday treat and because you are great Pitt fans I linked a ton of info in the chart below.  The actual scores of the games are linked to the box score and the “Opponent’s Gameday Rank” column has either articles about the game or some videos I thought were fun to watch…  Grab a beer and Enjoy!!

Year Head Coach Opp. Gameday Rank Final Score Opp. Final Ranking Record vs Ranked teams
1997 Walt Harris #22 Miami 21-17 NR
WH #19   VT 30-23 NR 2-3
2001 WH #12   VT 38-7 #18 1-1
2002 WH #3     VT 28-21 #18 1-3
2003 WH #5     VT 31-28 NR 1-1
2004 WH #24 ND 41-38 #17
WH #21 WVU 16-13 NR 2-0
2007 Dave Wannstedt #23 Cincy 24-17 #17
DW #2 WVU * 13-9 #6 2-0
2008 DW #10 USF 26-21 NR 1-2
2011 Graham #16 USF 44-17 NR 1-1
2012 Paul Chryst #13 VT 35-17 NR
PC #21 RU 27-6 NR 2-2
2013 PC #24 ND 28-21 #21 1-1
2016 Pat Narduzzi NR PSU * 42-39 #7
PN #3 Clemson * 43-42 #1 1-1

I’ll pick my three favorites (highlighted in bold) and then you all can chip in with yours in the comments section.

#1 in my book has to be the great and wonderful stick in Mountaineer eyes 13-9 win in 2007.  A true FR QB who was forced to start due to two other starting QBs being knocked out… and a 4-7 record going into the last game of a rather disappointing season.

But I have said many times that 2007 was my favorite modern-day Pitt season and that is because every time you thought the team couldn’t deal with the setbacks they bounced up a won games.

And this 13-9 game? Knocked the rival West Virginia team right out of contention for the national championship and onto thier ass.

For me Tyler Palko ‘s five passing TD game against Notre Dame in 2004 was a great win.  Not only was it a blast to watch but made us think we had a valid shot at our first (and only) BCS game. We upset #21 WVU the next week which made the ND win even sweeter.

But my #2 on the list would have to be beating PSU after that long absence of games between the two schools.  It was a very close game but we won.  I don’t have to go into dateils; we all remember it very well.

That leaves the Clemson win as #3 for me. Going into Death Valley is not a good thing under any conditions, but when facing a team as strong as the #3 ranked Clemson Tigers is a whole new set of stressors. But we beat them up and down the field – made a few big stops on defense late in the game. That set the stage for the game winning field goal by SR Chris Blewitt.

As much fun as that was, and it was, it wasn’t a game against a team that I have an emotional attachment to like West Virginia and Penn state with our hundreds of matches played and the hundreds of stories that came from those rivalry games.

Pitt vs Penn state is its own place in the sports world and The Backyard Brawl does also.  not so much Pitt and Clemson.

But two out of my Top # were accomplished bu our current HC in only his second season as a HC anywhere, not too shabby and bodes well for the future.

What are yours?

Below is the overall record of our four head coaches over that time period, both in big games and in overall play.  So far Pat Narduzzi is in the winning percentage lead and let’s hope that holds course.

Wannstedt sits in 2nd place… and let’s not drag in the argument in that the ACC competition is that much better, if at all, then the Big East was back in the heyday of BE play.  There were some damned good BE teams we faced on a regular basis.

But you have to look at Paul Chryst’s first year as a HC anywhere and appreciate his upsetting both ranked ND and Rutgers in that season.

Head Coach W-L vs Ranked Teams Win % vs Ranked Teams Total W/L Record at Pitt
Pat Narduzzi 2-3 40% 16-10    (62%)
Paul Chryst 3-4 43% 19-20    (49%)
Todd Graham 1-1 50% 6-7        (46%)
Dave Wannstedt 3-8 27% 35-26    (57%)
Walt Harris 7-19 27%  44-40   (48%)%

Notes:  We need to start getting serious about out Pitt POV Dinner on the evening of July 15th.  Boyd’s Kids Football Camp will be over by 1:00 pm so I’ll be finished there around 2:00 or so after I interview him. (BTW – post suggestions as far a questions you would like me to ask).

Rich Tencza (Richman) has a thought that Southern Tier Brewing Company would be nice but that is right next to PNC Park where the Pirates are playing St/. Louis in a promotions night at 7:05 pm.

S Tier

Maybe somewhere with less traffic?  Unless we want to meet for a late lunch then that place would probably be OK.  Let me know what other spots you think would be nice.

  1. Maybe it’s just because it is the most recent huge Pitt win that I attended in person or perhaps it was the great venue of Death Valley on the day the Clemson faithful honored their Seniors on the Tigers squad, in any case beating Clemson in Death Valley heads my list.

When you consider that Whitehead fumble recovery and 100 yard return for our own TD was overturned by video review, I was certain, right then, that there was no way Pitt comes back from such a devastating 14 point turn of events. But they did, & in great dramatic fashion. So many times the Panthers have ended up being on the wrong side of that kind of game. Not this time though. Simply a great come from behind win against the eventual National Champions!

And to top it all off on a positive note, those Clemson fans were the most courteous, gracious fans after the game, even in defeat. Sure wasn’t the case after 13-9 with those inbred Hoopie fans.

Safe & happy 4th of July everybody. H2P!

  2. OMG Pman, you almost made me…. pee man with the 4th story. That is hysterical and a great memory, thanks for sharing!

My all-time favorite 4th of July story involved several Pittsburgh Penguins. There was a reason they missed the playoffs a lot during those years. One of their first round draft picks and many later draft picks were at a small gathering in Peters Township. The canadian players had purchased m-80’s along with regular fireworks, firecrackers and brought plenty of canadian beer. Everyone was pretty liquored up as the night progressed. We had just finished a ball tournament the day before and had golfed earlier in the day at Rolling Hills CC. At around 10:30pm, the players started lighting the fireworks and bottle rockets, which was a blast. And then things changed. Apparently, the americans did not know how to have fun! A later pick threw a smaller firework at the 1st rounder, making him “dance”. They did that for about 20 minutes until one got too close. What started as good fun escalated to the point where the 1st rounder got mad an took an M-80 to the road and dropped it into the open roof of the late rounders sports car. BOOM!!! Car seat stuffing and crap was flying everywhere and the car interior caught on fire.

After putting the fire out and everyone laughing to the point of crying, the party abruptly ended. The police and fire department were called by the neighbors. No charges were filed and no citations issued. The 1st rounder shut it down immediately.

Happy 4th everyone! Safe travels to all.

Every year my Dad would make his illegal fireworks run to West Virginia and bring back a stuffed trunk full of fireworks. You may be thinking “Wow, he probably made a fortune selling them.” NOPE, not one cent!!!!
They were ALL for him and me to shoot off on our own (right in our little neighborhood in Dormont). Most neighbors loved it, neighbors with dogs didn’t!. Anyway, this one year he was really excited with his purchase, the reason?, he convinced a WVA hillbilly to sell him a commercial rocket (you know, the kind that the professionals put in a mortar launch type pipe to shoot). This thing was YUGE!!! ( 3 ft. long with a 5 to 6″ diameter). He couldn’t wait to shoot this thing off and the second it was dark enough he was in the back yard ready to light it. I was about 15 yrs. old at the time and in my Dad’s excitement he was already pulling out his cigarette matches to light the thing. As he tries lighting it (which he couldn’t do because, no kidding, the fuse was as thick as a grown mans finger) I said “Hey Dad, I think that rocket needs some kind of launching pad.” He stepped back a moment, looked over the situation and said, “Jim, you’re probably right!” So we run into the garage and start bringing out any and everything that could build a makeshift launch pad (broom, rake, bricks, etc.) The goal was to have the rocket facing straight up and we accomplished that goal and then tried to relight the fuse. This time my dad tightly rolls up a section of the Pittsburgh Press and lights it like a torch and holds it at the bottom of the fuse. All of a sudden the fuse lights and the amount of flame from the fuse startles my dad and as he starts to run he accidently kicks the rake which drops the rocket to a horizontal position facing our neighbors house, Mr. Ragu.
My dad considered going back to re straighten it but decided it was too late. As I looked at Mr. Ragu’s house, his side large picture window was not yet draped and there he is sitting on his couch smoking a pipe and reading the newspaper! (the rocket was now aimed directly at that window). The distance to the window was about 80 to 100ft (there was our small back yard, an alley, his side yard, driveway, and the window.) As the lighted fuse slowly made it’s way to the rocket I envisioned the rocket going right thru his living room in front of him as he read his paper and out the other side of the house! Finally, for what seemed like an eternity, the rocket ignites, and as feared, is heading directly toward that large picture window!!! At the last second, as if touched by an angel, the rocket veers a little to the left and strikes the house brick, missing the window by at most 2-4″!!! Mr. Ragu, who hears this loud thud on his house, runs out to see what the heck is going on and suddenly finds himself in the middle of his driveway and in a fight for his life with a runaway rocket which is now exploding firework displays and loud thunderous explosions! At this point my dad and I run into the house and turn off all the lights! (LOL).

The #2 game would be clemscum 2016 – great edge of your seat game, watched on tv at home with my wife. We were in awe…

The #3 game is wvcc and the 13-9 upset that knocked them from a chance at the National Championship. Sweet! But again, I watched the game on tv.

All three were great, but my dislike for psu runs deep. Being in the stadium last September with a record crowd screaming for their team to win and Ryan Lewis makes a great play to elevate the noise to unthinkable decibel levels. You could not hear anything but the roar of the crowd and you could feel only the joy a Pitt fan could feel at that moment. The nitters were disappointed and I could have cared less.

All three show up with their spouse and 2 kids each. Weather was great and the water perfectly refreshing. My grand-kids range from 3-6, 3 girls and 3 boys. Looked like fun in the pool so I splashed down and had a blast with the young ones for a half hour or so. When I got out of the pool my daughter gasped and ask me what happen to my face? Boom

I thought she was kidding until I rub my left side of face and it was swollen to high hell. Well my daughter and her husband are both anesthetists (both nurses) My daughter in law just past her nursing board and my wife was a RN for 43 years. So guess what happened?

Off to the emergency room for the next 3 hours which is unusually fast for that joint. We come home to an empty house but they had put everything away. If I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have any luck at all… ike

  10. Didn’t Walt win a big overtime game against WVUCC his first year, propelling us to a bowl game for the first time in forever? Johnny 2 had tanked the program (72-0 OSU), and Pitt football was so low we had to reach up just to touch bottom. So for me, that was the biggest game. Finally hope. That is, of course, that the game actually happened and it wasnt some twisted memory in my twisted mind.

    1. The 1997 win over West Virginia stands out as the best win Walt’s teams had against the Hoopies during his tenure. To me, Walt’s 1997 team was a lot like Johnny Majors’ ’73 team. Surprises came regularly. I still remember the game in a near empty Pitt Stadium against Syracuse when Pitt took the lead late in the game then lost by a few points. Of course Pitt followed that with a win against Virginia Tech and the season finale against West Virginia, a triple-overtime shoot out led by Pete Gonzalez.

  11. I really studied all of my options for my 3 game pick and when the dust settled my 3 were the same 3 and in the exact order of Reed’s top 3: 13-9; PSU(2016), and Clemson (2016).
Also, I lost total respect for Richrod after that game because in his nearly 5 minute post game interview he NEVER ONCE even mentioned Pitt’s name. Nothing, nada, he spoke as if they (WVa) were on the field by themselves and had just beaten themselves without any other team out there. I have never heard a losing coach, at least in some way, acknowledge that the other team played well, deserved to win, etc. – not Richrod!

  14. Almost as enjoyable as 13-9, was the RichRod post game presser. Must see TV for any Pitt fan. He was in a total state of shock/depression. Referred to the game as a “nightmare”. Best part was that the Pitt players could be heard in the background, cheering loudly in their locker room. The video is readily available on YouTube. I watch it every so often just for a smile.

To me, the best victory of the bunch still has to be PSU 2016. There was just so much anticipation leading up to that game. Game day comes and all of the smug Nitter fans were happy to proclaim their superiority in the streets and parking lots of the North Shore. Full house, beautiful day (but stifling hot) and we lay the wood to them. Dominant first half. Nothing better than beating your rival. Which to me, puts 13-9 at #2. Clemson upset is #3.

When Pitt beat the WV High School Academy, I was working for Goldman Sachs in WV at a company that was just purchased in a large deal. I called the local company IT department and told them i was having computer problems and they asked permission to take over my computer. In those days, it was okay to ask. I gave them my password which was Pitt13WVU9. It was a solid joke. Around noon that day, things started disappearing from my desktop….No joke! They were serious and didn’t give a lick about who I was. They were hurt!

I used that score as my password there for a long time and left many internal crank calls late at night asking for a call back using the score as my call back number. What a great year and memory!

  20. I recall back in 08 when we beat an undefeated, ranked Iowa team in late September. That game was important for two reasons:

    (1) as it turned out, that was the only time in the 4 game series (throughout 7 years) that we beat the Hawkeyes, although every game was 4 points or less. Remember they beat us on a 57 yard FG in HCPN’s 1st year.

    (2) that Iowa team we beat in 08 later would beat PSU later in the season. It’s not as good as beating them head to head but at least it kind of quieted Nit Nation down a bit as they were claiming they were so far better than us that Pitt was irrelevant to them

    Like

    1. I went back and checked. Iowa was 3-0 when Pitt played them but was unranked at the time. They would finish the season ranked 20th. But the best part is that they beat an undefeated PSU team ranked 3rd on Nov. 8th. That would be the only PSU loss until they lost in the Rose Bowl to USC.

Somewhat of a moral victory for Pitt that year

    4. cut up into 6×6″ squares and use as snot rag. — Now this might be the best idea yet!
    5. cut up into 12×12″ square and use as a baby diaper.– Until this idea. My grandkids are out of diapers now. darn!
    6. will make excellent kindling for BBQ pit. hmm? — I do have a fire-pit and wish I had a neighbor who is a psu fan. Would love to choke them out with the psu smoke.
    7. make a custom bikini out of it for your wife— Never, I made her take a PITT shirt back last year because it wasn’t script (no lie)

  34. Mike Young just signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Washington Wizards. Don’t know what a two-way contract is.

    1. wwb, I believe a two way contract allows the team to move a player between the NBA team and a minor league squad as needed. These contracts are common with young hockey players.

  36. OOPS, forgot to mention my idea of cutting out some letters from a white sheet and sewing them onto that nitter flag prior to running it up the flagpole. Those letters would be:
    J
    O
    E
    K
    N
    E
    W

  37. Oh yeah my top 3

Clemson. Was way more excited watching this game on TV than I was watching penn state lose at heinz. Beating clemson in 2016 will do more for the program than beating penn state in 2016 if pitt actually capitalizes on a big win for once. The last time pitt did was wanny after 13-9.
13-9. A crying hoopie is a beautiful hoopie. Which is just about the only time that happens.
Penn state. Beating them was very nice but if pitt wins this year it will be more satisfying to me than last year, outside of penn state being highly ranked this time. Winning in 2016 can be discounted and rationalized to a small degree, as the cultists have tried very hard to do. Winning in 2017 will put a stamp on pitt vs penn state that won’t be easily erased.

  38. Hey guys I’m going to throw in the final game at Pitt Stadium, where a very undermanned Pitt team knocked off Notre Dame with a walk-on linebacker sealing the deal by way of 4th quarter interception. How’s that for a Rudy story?

  39. Atlanta Panther beat me to the punch by naming the last game in Pitt Stadium where we beat ND in spite of their attempted last minute resurgence. That was WH and a QB that xf from OSU to Pitt first name David——. Going back further —1959 season , at home, 59000+/ fans/ game and Pitt Knocked off undefeated ND and PS in the same season while breaking the arm of States’ All American QB Richie Lucas who was therefore not available to them in their bowl game.I still have the Pittsburgh Press photo showing two crashing Pitt ends, Delfine and Ditka along with our middle linebacker Foge Fazio alone in the state backfield and converging on Lucas which was what those 3 did for the entire game. We can only hope that last year will be the beginning of more games like this.H2P

  40. Last game at PITT Stadium brings back great and sad memories at the same time. I have an overhead picture of that sold out game/stadium in my game-room and it is my prized possession memorabilia. …and you guys are right, that game is right up there with the best of the PITT victories! …. ike

  41. Last game Pitt Stadium was awesome with all the past stars, the weather was perfect and the football was terrific but you are right about glad and sad ike. The stars were right about everything but it was the end of an era at Pitt. Pitt also ended the era of the Foge Fazio defense at Notre Dame and it was too bad Pitt had to put the last nail in his career coaching but mg it was a glorious night.
