  1. I saw a hot take on twitter I found hilarious. The pirates are transferring up Jacob Stallings tonight. Question is if Kevin Stallings will block his transfer.

    On the last article topic. Dokish cherry picked a bit leaving out a rather big-time recruit in Bastida from Ft Lauderdale. He’s narrowed his choice between PITT and MSU. Now MSU just had 3 players arrested on sexual charges. So who knows

  7. Here’s a BTW. Last night at the U2 concert what did Heinz field do different?

    Tarped parts of the upper deck off. Yes, this is sure to add to the cries of tarping off for low attendance PITT games. I’m actually making a turnabout and beginning to see the inevitable in PITT’s future home games.

    Pitt’s Dewayne Hendrix finishes with double-digit sacks

    Ejuan Price (and his 13 sacks) are gone, and Pitt looks particularly thin up front. But Pat Narduzzi’s defenses tend not to sit back and relax. They attack the QB, so someone is going to pick up the slack. That someone might as well be Hendrix, a talented defensive end who transferred in from Tennessee two years ago but has seen just one game of action since. An injury ended his 2016 campaign on the third series of the year, but he figures to be a starter from Day 1 again this season, and if he’s healthy, Hendrix could easily join the ranks of Bradley Chubb, Harold Landry, Clelin Ferrell and the other top pass-rushers in the ACC

  10. Hendrix wasn’t healthy last season and wasn’t healthy for the spring practices at Pitt. Not sure I’d be writing him up until I see if he can stay healthy for more than one game and what he’s capable of doing on the field.

    back to back 8 regular season wins and some already think PITT is mired in mediocrity. Stuck there. Back away from the tree boys and take a look at the forest. It’s big and looking more beautiful everyday.

    As far as recruiting goes, PITT is still one year away from seeing what Narduzzi’s recruits can and will do. RS sophomores are not the basis of a good football team. Can we just see instead of diving so deep into our own fears and history and appreciate for at least a moment what has been accomplished in two years?

    As far as this years recruiting class? Same thing, it’s an unfinished class and far too early to criticize it. Looking out the rear-view mirror only gets one stuck in the past without the possibility of seeing what’s ahead and possibly positive future.

    Just like the round-table it’s the negative commenters that are afraid to jump in.. You ever noticed that? It’s the ones that want to complain all things PITT that won’t go on the round-table to express their feelings with the words from their mouths. I don’t get that. and not you Upitt but all the negative posters.

  13. Why make anyone who brings up a less than cheerleading post a negative poster? How about reclassifying some of them as a realistic poster. Simply put Ike, at the present time Pitt is VERY THIN on the depth chart and as such very susceptible at this point in time to having a losing season on any significant injury to their key starters.

  14. Nope, you don’t have to be a cheerleader as I feel I can be an objective poster as well. I actually have been very been critical of PITT football in the past….. and actually I’m not sure I was singling out any particular poster?

    As a matter of what I posted, I say something very similar as you do and I quote myself “PITT is still one year away from seeing what Narduzzi’s recruits can and will do. RS sophomores are not the basis of a good football team.”.

    In other words, I realize PITT is still thin on the depth chart. I was referring more to what has already been done in the two short years since Narduzzi arrived. I think it’s important to be realistic but the constant negativity about the past two seasons and trying to diminish the wins against Clemson and psu weighs on me. Beating Clemson means nothing because they lost to NW???? What’s that?

  18. Thank goodness someone finally came to their senses about Cam Johnson. e didn’t prosper here athletically, but did academically. He should do well when surrounded by quality players. I think defensively he struggles and will get benched at some point by Williams.

    On the bright side for him, he most likely doesn’t have to go to classes. That happens a lot there.

  19. Huff, you still don’t get that this is very little about Cam Johnson … but all about the NCAA and UNC. There is an article in the PG Sports entitled “NCAA rule haning Pitt out to dry on Cam Johnson transfer” … and it begins with “Pitt was put in a no-win situation ….”

    There were about 200 grad transfers this year and only ONE transferred within conference. And why? … because Almighty UNC wanted him …. that’s why!

    I will guaranfreakintee you that if the situation was reversed .. Pitt wouldn’t have smelled Cam Johnson. First off, Pitt wouldn’t even have tried because they knew it could never happen.

  20. Below is an excerpt from an article in Trib today which explains why Pitt had to do what it did. Again, Pitt restricted the grad transfer from immediately being eligible if he transferred to an ACC school. (Not uncommon — no other grad transfer has transferred within conference.) Then, Pitt gives Cam a release to allow jim to receive financial support from UNC next year even though he wouldn’t be playing … so the NCAA interprets the rule that since Pitt allowed this, then the player should be allowed to play ASAP.

    In other words, Pitt is being penalized for being the nice guy …. and the cheating UNC comes out on top. (of course!!)

    Trib: Pitt officials said the NCAA’s recent interpretation of the rule led them to grant Johnson his freedom.

    If they had not granted a full release, Johnson would be “permanently ineligible,” Pitt athletic department spokesman Matt Plizga said in a release.

    “This interpretation presents unduly restrictive eligibility stipulations on graduate transfers that do not exist with other transfer students. The general transfer rules are less restrictive and would allow a student-athlete the opportunity to immediately receive athletic aid, continue his graduate education for two years and still have the opportunity to compete after serving a year in residence.

    “Therefore, given this NCAA interpretation, we have decided to take a less restrictive approach and grant Cameron Johnson the opportunity to transfer to another ACC school with immediate eligibility for competition. We were proud to have Cameron as a student-athlete and are now proud to have him as a graduate of our institution. We wish him the very best as he pursues his graduate degree.”

      Johnson said NCAA regulations state schools are required to fully release graduate transfers to go anywhere or block them entirely.

      “It wasn’t their intention to not allow Cam to continue his basketball career, so they decided to give him a full release,” Gil Johnson said.

      Gil Johnson recently was in contact with NCAA and ACC officials who advised him his son should be free to transfer

      Now, do you really think if a player was leaving UNC for Pitt, the NCAA would have ‘interpreted’ the same way?

    Pitt caves again. Pitt is weak. They fire people and still pay them, they waive buyouts, they let people out of contracts, when do they grow a pair.

    This has opened the doors and will affect many teams going forward but not teams like UNC. Their top players don’t last to be graduates. If the NCAA allows this, then all student athletes should have the same rights.

    Coaches should not have to recruit players already on their team so they don’t jump to another team.

    Screw the NCAA.

  27. wbb, I get that you hate UNC. I don’t particularly care for them and a lot of things about college athletics.

    But in a system where a kid can leave after one year to play for a pro team, a rule that restricts where a graduate student can play will not hold up in court. That is why Pitt folded.

    It hurts that we lose our best player, I get that, but don’t hold it against him. It is Pitt’s incompetence that led him to leave. It is easy for us to say he should be loyal to his school, but not if it jeopardizes his future.

    If a grad student on scholarship was in a program that lost its accreditation, no one would say anything or think less of a student for transferring to a school with the best opportunity for that kids success,

    Our program is a hot mess, taking out your frustration on Cam or another successful program (even if they are cheaters) is just sour grapes.

    By the way, I have decided to hold on to my season tickets for Basketball. Yes I am pissed and frustrated, and probably stupid, but I am loyal to my school even when the chips are down. I do reserve my right to boo.

    1. for the umpteenth time, I don’t blame Cam for leaving … in fact, I endorse it.

      BUT, UNC has a helluva lot of nerve for even trying to recruit him, knowing the restriction placed on from a fellow conference school.

      But of course … they are the great UNC … and of course, the front-running media gets behind their cause. You and others here must realize that only a school like UNC would get away with this. They just completely usurped a restriction from another school within its own conference.

      In other words … Pitt is an absolute nobody … even in their own conference

      1. The elite schools do whatever it takes to win. That is one reason Pitt is always an also ran.

        Whether it is money or pushing the envelop on the rules, Pitt will never play with the Big Boys.

        I don’t like it either, but in this instance I side with Cam’s freedom to play where he wants to.

        Loyalty is a two way street, was Pitt loyal to their players and fans when they helped push their legendary coach out the door in favor of a washed up, never has been with a losing conference record, and a track record of abusing his players?

        Pitt will always be a nobody, until they wise up and realize what it takes to compete. UNC will just continue to challenge for more NC’s.

  30. BigB – that’s BS. If you’re going to make 17 and 18 year olds sign contracts, let them hire agents to negotiate them. Policy be damned. NDA’s and non-competes don’t work in the real world. Apparently they don’t work in the sports world either. Nothing to do with morals or ethics. Neither of which Stallings has anyways.

    If Pitt makes life rough on the court for Cam that’s 200% fair game.

    Wbb – UNC has recently allowed a grad transfer to go to UVA where he was eligible immediately and played against UNC the following year in football.

    Like I said, let kids hire agents to negotiate LOI’s. I bet the language changes. I find it amazing people want to restrict a Pitt grad from improving his life.

    The NCAA in general is trash and their definition of amateurism is archaic. Their idealism of student-athlete is also hypocritical.

    I’m all for players with backbones standing up for themselves.

    I love Pitt but they deserved all of the negative pub that came their way. It was 100% a controllable situation and Pitt alone let it spiral out of control to only end up where most logical people knew it would.

  35. I am still trying to figure this out from the keep Cam here camp. Cam did everything he was asked to do. He gave his best effort on the court and he gave his best effort in the classroom, graduating in three years. What do you guys want?

    His legal argument was strong and one of the reasons I suggested that Pitt let him go before the negative publicity started.

    Will williams and stallings shake hands? Of course they will. But it will be a double secret handshake. They are in a very small fraternity. This wasn’t williams versus stallings. It was a very good rule that Pitt has used to its advantage with Peterman with 2 years of eligibility. The only difference is within the same conference. Who cares? If he is talented enough to play for UNC, then Stallings misused him last year.

    Pitt was in a no win situation because of the rules, really? The part everyone is missing is that Pitt knew, or should have known the rules before acting like the whinies! The NCAA is not the rulemaking body here. They have no LEGAL authority over this. When the NCAA looked at it, they realized their rule would NEVER, double ever hold up in the court of law and as such rendered their guidance accordingly.

    They surely aren’t going to be named a defendant in a lawsuit by Cam and spend a half million dollars arguing over a losing battle. It doesn’t work that way folks.

    Cam fulfilled his obligation to the university. Be happy he was here or not. Your choice. Just don’t think that the NCAA rules are legally binding on the players. If they were, they wouldn’t have permitted Northwestern to determine whether they could unionize and be named as employees of the university. The REAL LAW trumps, not an organization.

    If you want to be mad, be mad at Stallings for not putting Cam in a position to thrive (thru Cams eyes). Blame our administration for not understanding the difference between law and procedures. Laws beat procedures every time.
