GC and I are trying to figure out who all is shown in this circa 1981 photo of Danny Marino and his guys on the Pitt team- that team that went 11-1 for three straight seasons if we remember…

The first commenter to correctly ID all the players in order (with both first and last names including uniform numbers) wins a all-expenses paid trip to Bleak House,  located in beautiful Broadstairs, British Isles. You will also have an evening supper date with the lovely, and somewhat promiscuous, Ada Clare, followed by a four hour lecture on the differences in meaning of the two  phrases “Bleak” and “Not Over Joyed“.

  1. I just watched about two hours of Pitt’s 2016 team’s highlights on YouTube on my new Samsung 55″ UHD TV and can report that while the videos look much better and very much crisper our pass defense still sucked.

    BTW, got that brand new TV for $450…

  12. Craig Meyer reporter more than a month ago that Nix and Milligan are trying to graduate in the summer to be grad transfers. It was about the time he also said there was a surprise transfer (Cam) perhaps on the horizon. This one was expected. It’s past the point of hoping Stallings is fired. His job is safe.

  17. Notice that none of these guys who are transferring and landing anywhere decent other than Cam. I repeat that I am not a fan of Stallings and hated the way he was hired. He was never anything more than a mediocre coach at Vanderbilt. But he inherited a team with no center or point guard, and only 4 or 5 ACC caliber players. The only decent bench player was hurt most of the season (Luther). I still blame Dixon first. Then Barnes. As someone pointed out, it would be an unprecedented move in the annals of NCAA basketball to fire Stallings after one season. Are we really going to eat 5 years of his contract? Who would take the job now?

    1. But he didn’t even try to develop a PG. Instead, he tried an experiment where he had a small forward as PG, and it failed … with no back-up plan. He also took over a team with at least one open schollie and either didn’t try or couldn’t get a grad transfer center (Pitt had 2 of them the year before — they serviceable at best but they did contribute)

      The fact remains … Pitt had 4 starters and 6 of 7 top scorers from an NCAA team and finished below .500. On the other hand, Vandy has two No. 1 NBA picks leave the program last year but still improved its record with a new coach.

      I have heard at least a half-dozen times on Sirius XM 84 (college sports) what a joke Stallings is while Vandy made a really good hire .. in fact, I just heard it again last Friday afternoon while coming home from work. Now these are opinions from an outsider who knows college sports.

  18. There will be a buyout. Pitt loses move than KS’s contract each year. Its a no brainer. He’s dead man walking but of course they dont want to say that. Politics and Perception. Pitt is a bad basketball program right now. And our new AD is unproven. Good set-up though for the right coach. Assuming Heather is worth her salary but that doesnt say much.

  20. Missing – Sorry but that same team made the tourney the year before and this year were Seniors. Dixon takes same team to Tourney again. So, I blame Barnes, Rockports and not Dixon. Dixon needed to go. But not replaced by a 1981 Ford Pinto with no Transmission

    1. Not same team…. JR was the PG and we at least had bodies at center (Maia and Nelson-Adoda). And despite making the tourney, they lost 6 or their last nine. They quit on Jamie the same way they quit on Stallings. That said, he was a terrible hire. We all agree on that. I just don’t see any way they fire him, so I’m going to at least try to support him. You guys at least have to admit that he was not dealt a very good hand. Next year will be another dumpster fire, so your idea of firing him now isn’t terrible. It’s just not going to happen.

    1. I was an RA in ’83 and ’84 and most dealings with the big-time athletes that lived or visited in the dorms were uhhh, fun.

  28. If Stallings is fired after next season then there is another exodus of players and another mediocre coach is hired. What sure-fire winner is coming to Pitt? The answer? No one. Let’s see what Stallings can do with his freshmen class by the time they’re juniors.

  30. Upitt the baseball team swept by a very weak team in GTech. Overall record deeply inflated by all weak cupcakes on schedule. In ACC they are8 games below 500. Do you think administration cares? Think football because that’s one of the only threads left to get excited for anymore at Pitt. H2P BEAT PENN STATE

  32. Glad Nix is transferring. That had to happen. Love the kid but he should not take up a scholarship when he doesn’t belong in the ACC. Same with Wilson who is going to Georgia State or something.

    These players are not a loss. Cam Johnson was the only one that was a legit player.

    1. When you’re not even going to fill the allotted 13 scholarships why is it good that Nix is gone? He can throw some weight around at least for eight minutes a game. Wilson brought ZERO to the table. Nix can at least “oops” fall into the opposition and maybe hurt a knee, forcing the opposing big out of the game.

      Cam and Nix, losses. The rest, not so much.

  33. Three questions. (1) This one has nagged at me for months. Exactly how stupid was Stallings to take the job knowing (a) he was going to be coaching in a much tougher conference (b) without a point guard, and (c) without a center, and (d) with a team that could not play defense? My answer: pretty fking stupid. And as a result we have the stupid fk running one of the two revenue generating programs.

    (2) How much of an impediment is it to a Pitt alum or Pitt fan to make a contribution to Pitt athletics knowing that at least some of the money is going to pay Stallings?

    (3) Why would anyone spend money on buying a Pitt basketball ticket next year?

    1. Less than a decade ago, Pitt BB was source of pride, probably my favorite team in any sport, and couldn’t wait to watch the next game. Now, I feel completely ambivalent … and have no ownership of the program at all. Not sure if I’m angrier at the search firm/ previous AD for the collusion or the Admin for allowing such a fraudulent hire. Sadly, we deserve all the current and forthcoming insults and verbal abuse from opposing fans and media alike.

      If KS proves me wrong and fields a competitive team, I will congratulate him and admit my error

    2. KS was stupid or desperate. I will still buy tickets only because the incoming players will most likely be here in two years with or without KS. They committed to the University and deserve the support of the fans no matter what you think of KS. Plus, college basketball is one of the top sports I enjoy watching.

  35. Don’t know if I read this in the Post article or somewhere else but anyways concerning The Cathedral of Learning. Bowman did receive a lot of negative feedback on the construction and here’s a rumor or as legend has it from wiki

    Local legend states that to counteract this resistance, Bowman ordered that the construction of the walls would start at the top floor and work its way down, so the project could not be canceled. This has been traced to an account in November 21, 1943, issue of At Ease, a tabloid related to local military personnel on campus, which stated that “the masonry was started from the top downward.” Construction photographs show that this was not the case, and that some stonework was done on the first floor before any other stonework was begun. One engineer with the company working on the Cathedral[who?] explained that the exterior walls of the Cathedral are not load-bearing. Because of this, many similar buildings would start construction at the third or fourth floors. Practically, this makes sense, as it allows easy movement of building materials and equipment into and out of the building. Instead, in the Cathedral’s case, the issue was one of the stone that would be used in lower stories. In fact, the quarry was not prepared to deliver the stone on schedule, so construction was delayed, and work began on the higher stories.

  36. so on other words …. back around 100 years ago, Pitt set the standard for schools like Baylor, SMU, Louisville, pick your SEC school, and yes, the Dairy School which values sports over academia. Too bad we ‘regressed’ where now academics are placed on such a high plateau and sports are a distant second.

    1. And academics does nothing for anyone on Saturday afternoons when the ball is snapped. Pitt is a Mickey Mouse operation when it comes to sports. We were extremely lucky Dixon stayed all through last decade because that has been the only period in my lifetime where you could count on a Pitt team being successful.

      Too bad Dixon couldn’t sustain it because during the 2010-11 season I thought Pitt was in store for another 10-year run. Far from it. Football is still trying to dig out from Bozik, Brascoe, O’Connor, Smiley and tight-wad Nordy. Gallagher is fooling everyone with his smile, so who knows the future of football.

  37. Another Penn State black eye making national news.

    The grand jury, in its report, stated that it had found evidence of a history of hazing at the fraternity that included forced drinking and paddling, and found that Penn State’s Greek community “nurtured an environment so permissive of excessive drinking and hazing that it emboldened its members to repeatedly act with reckless disregard to human life.”

    The grand jury concluded in the report that Piazza’s death wasn’t the result of isolated conduct or a simple mistake but as a “direct result of the extremely reckless conduct of members of the Beta Fraternity who operated within the permissive atmosphere FOSTERED BY PENN STATE’S INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL”.

    Sounds familiar, more known illegal behavior that is ignored. This time, it cost a kid his life. Morons.

  38. Concerning basketball, yes Cam Johnson is a big loss for sure. Everyone else….not so much. To answer the question “why did KS want to come here”, the answer is pretty simple. Vanderbilt was getting tired of him and wanted a change. At his age Pitt was clearly his best option (plus his son was catching for the Pirates which is a huge incentive). For KS it was a no brainer. For Pitt it was a poor hire by Barnes, who took the easy and lazy way to hire a coach thru an expensive search committee. Shame on Barnes!!!

    We need to have a very brief history lesson about the Dairy College. I like to call them that. In reality they are as follows:

    “In 1855, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania chartered the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania at the request of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society. Centre County became the site of the new college in response to a gift of 200 acres from James Irvin of Bellefonte. The School opened in 1859 with Dr. Evan Pugh as the first president. The school was renamed Agricultural College of Pennsylvania in 1862 and became the Commonwealth’s sole land-grant institution. It was renamed Pennsylvania State College in 1874 and Pennsylvania State University in 1953”.

    So we should refer to them going forward as the Dairy College or the Farmers High School. You just can’t make that up.

    We started out as The Pittsburgh Academy and then changed to The Western University of Pennsylvania. Much more class than the Dairy or Farmers High School. What a riot!

  50. Lastrow & BigB – I think someone going to the Pitt / Farmer’s High School game this fall should have a BIG sign saying, “We R Farmers”, complete with a couple of musical notes on it!

    I wish our athletic fund was big enough to afford a plane pulling such a sign circling the stadium during the game.

    BTW, I think “FHS” has a nice rhythm to it!
