    Four Pitt Teams Earn APR Public Recognition Awards from NCAA
    The four public recognition awards are a Pitt record for a single year.

    PITTSBURGH—Four University of Pittsburgh intercollegiate sports programs earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for exemplary Academic Progress Rates (APR): men’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s softball and women’s tennis.

    The awards are presented each year to teams finishing among the top 10 percent of their respective sport based on the most recent multi-year APR. The four teams mark Pitt’s highest number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards in a single year. The Panthers now have 19 teams recognized in the 12 years since the APR has been tracked.

    The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.

    “We are extremely proud of our programs that were recognized by the NCAA for APR excellence,” Pitt Director of Athletics Heather Lyke said. “We have incredibly driven student-athletes as well as highly supportive coaches and staff at the University of Pittsburgh, and I’m excited about seeing our number of recognized teams grow in the future.”

  4. Something nice to brag about when your teams performance on the court is less than excellent. You need a proper balance. And really most ADs and the NCAA don’t care about grades. They care about wins and money. If the NCAA cared, there would be more schools on real sanctions or given the death penalty. It’s not a level playing field going up against cheaters and schools with lower standards.

    How do you turn your computer camera on if you want to get in on the round table discussion?

    APR could be important to a college football team. With the proliferation of bowl games , 5-7 regular season teams have a chance at a bowl with a high APR. This fact is why Syracuse didn’t give up against PITT last season. With a win the Cuse makes a bowl because of APR. Instead it was Mississippi State vs. Miami (Ohio) in the St. Peterburg Bowl.

    It is a crappy bowl but if you haven’t been a bowl, then it’s a big deal to the team & alum.

  13. i usually don’t type much about pitt basketball but i have a question. Was St. John’s a recent power house in hoops or something? Why do we want multiple players from that team? I am just confused by this. If it’s about bodies offer some kids that are besties with 4 and 5 star players from next year in an effort to make inroads.

    A strategic plan is not just done in the business world.

    Finally, the new AD making comments about our athletes APR just isn’t kosher. She doesn’t know the kids yet and really shouldn’t comment on their efforts especially in women’s cross country. There is noone left on the mens basketball team. Just a hunch but I am guessing she doesn’t know many, if any of the non-revenue athletes. No hateration here, just a funny hunch!

  16. Well, I’m spending a few days at my cabin and couldn’t check in last night. So, here are my answers in text (in case anyone cares):

    1.Where did you grow up and what HS did you attend?
    I moved around a lot but went to high school at Lower Dauphin, outside of Hershey, PA.
    2.How did you first become interested in Pitt Football? It’s been so long, I can’t remember. Most likely, it was because my favorite Uncle is a PSU fan and I liked to give him a hard time.
    3. What is your strongest Pitt football memory – positive and negative.

    4.To me, I am Pitt’s target market…, those that did not attend the university, but reside in Pittsburgh. I think attendance would improve if they could reel in others like me. So how is this best done? Well ,winning is one thing and possibly the only thing. What else?

    No, they should have already dismissed him. If the D plays that bad, have Narduzzi take over play calling and demote Conklin. In-season firings look awful.

    6.How much do uniforms matter to you?
    They matter. Not as much as winning, but they matter.

    7.Do you visit the Oakland campus at all and what changes would you make there?
    Yes. I wouldn’t make any drastic changes. I think you’ll see continued growth and conversion of Oakland properties to the University.

    8.Do you miss PITT stadium at all?
    Yes, every football Saturday. Bowl stadiums have better sightlines. If your ass can’t handle bleacher seating, bring a cushion.. Heinz Field has ZERO college game atmosphere.

    9.How would you improve the student participation?
    Win games. With an off campus stadium, it’s too difficult to lure students to watch losing football.

    10.Who are your 5 or 3 all-time PITT favorite players?
    In no order: Marino, Martin, Ditka, Dorsett & Brian O’Neill!

    11.What three (3) BIG items of discussion will we be having after the season ends about what transpired during the 2017 season?
    Hell, this is Pitt football- who knows what’s going to happen?!

  17. Basketball IQ and IQ are clearly two different things. Congrats! Top 10% in all of D1! True student-ath … not sure they earned the athletes monicker this season though. Exemplary students. I’ll leave at that.

    St. Johns is in the Big East which is a good basketball conference. Pitt needs a mix of experienced players to go along with all the freshman because of the mass departures. A 6’6″ guard with experience and two years remaining to play is a nice pick up and if they can get a one year 6’8″ guy with experience they should take him.

    1. St Johns has been a bottom dweller in the Big East even after Syracuse, Pitt, ND and Louisville left. During Ellison’s two years playing for the Red Storm they finished 1-14 and 7-11 in conference. Ellison averaged 23.3 minutes and 7.4 ppg over that time. Ellison shot 40% from the field, 33% from the arc and 62% from the FT line. He averaged 2.6 assists and 2.1 turnovers.

      1. Darien Williams also played for the Red Storm over the past two seasons. He averaged 12.3 minutes and 3.7 ppg over that time. Williams averaged 2.6 rebounds (.75 offensive).

  19. Here’s a tid-bit for those who don’t have time to read other message boards. Charles Reeves recently played in a high school football all-star game. His stat line reads 5 catches for 204 yrds and 2 TD’s. That hardly seems right?? This young man is supposed to be a beast though.

  20. Even if Ellison turns out to be a role player, Pitt needs a mix of freshman and experience.

    1. Pitt needs players who can play. Experience does no good if the players aren’t capable. Pitt had tons of experience last season with some very good college players who had never before finished below .500 overall and still finished 4-14 in conference and below .500 overall.

      Ellison was a two-year starter on a poor team and he didn’t perform particularly well in doing so. What kind of experience will he be providing to the unknown members of the 2018 class in 16 months?

  21. I don’t like nomads! There is no evidence to suggest that these St. John’s castaways will be successful. If we are to rely on stats as many do, they just don’t make the cut. What were they rated in high school? You don’t see narduzzi accepting a zero star or two star that he expects to transfer in and play. He does allow four and five stars to come though. That said, the new TE from Rutgers High is in the fold but I dont know what he was ranked in HS.

    I don’t follow the stat line, except for free throw shooting because you are not being defended. Your number is your number and noone elses.

    Give out schollies to 2 star players that are connected to 5 * players for next year. Should we look at the Kansas superstar that was recently booted from team? I would chance that, I think. Depends on the crime!

  22. Unless you watch St.Johns play last year I would not judge Ellison. Brandon Knight was not spectacular his first two years either in 10 more minutes per game.

    Brandon Knight averaged about 33 minutes and 8.6 ppg over his first two years. He shot 40% from the field, 57% from the FT line. 5.5 assists per game.

    Ellison averaged 23.3 minutes and 7.4 ppg over that time. Ellison shot 40% from the field, 33% from the arc and 62% from the FT line. He averaged 2.6 assists and 2.1 turnovers.
