POV’s Miami Game Day Thread

Here we go friends. The team is in Miami and ready to stop their QB, pound their defensive line  to bruised meat and bring an ACC win back to Pittsburgh. Our predictions have been cast in stone and what’s left to do is out of the fan’s hands.

But don’t let that stop you from willing them to play their very best through this game thread.

Have at it friends – this one will define this season I believe – win and we have a good shot at bettering last year’s record which is what we want to see from our coaching staff – progression.

  4. Hey guys just checking in. I little girl has her birthday party today then we’re flying home to see my mom. The end is very near for her so please keep her in your prayers the last few weeks have sped up considerably and as many of you guys said it’s been real tough. I love my pit POV family and appreciate you guys. I like pit the win the game but I have a hard time thinking Miami’s gonna lose four street or five straight for that matter. This game will come down to coaching. I do think it’ll be lower scoring.

  34. we all know this pass defense sucks ass. I don’t care how well these upper class men practiced this week. I don’t care that the freshmen don’t “know” the plays. Webb and Lewis cannot ever be on the field again. Get the youngsters out there no matter what.

    I may just watch the offense and turn it off when we’re on defense. The problem with that is that the other team scores so fast…..

Something just HAPPENS to opposing Quarterbacks when they get to go against Terrish Webb, Ryan Lewis (Worst Offenders) and Pitt’s USELESS linebackers —- They are like Sharks who smell the profuse-bleeding, and Wolves who Smell Weakness and Fear — Lewis and Webb especially are just SO BAD I’m starting to question the literal sanity of the Defensive Staff????

  88. Urgh —- & no-exaggeration, with Matt Galambos (just…..horrible, why even bother?? Put a Cardboard cut-out there in the middle each snap) , Idowu (useless — contributes nothing whatsoever) and then now Caprara is back (Not a good player, not even close — slow, zero speed, makes zero plays) — Pitt’s Linebacking core this year has been just as BAD, and is just as responsible for this horrific defense as the d-backs .

  92. My biggest concern for the Panthers is recruiting. We will have an empty Heinz Ketchup Field, an uninspired team facing throwing qb’s and the Nits winning game after game against cupcakes.

  93. Narduzzi can’t stop any team with this load of stiffs on D. We have Whitehead and a few guys on the D-line and that’s it. Everyone else has to be replaced. No system he installs will work when almost everyone on the defensive side of the ball stinks.

    This reminds me of the same old Steelers when Chuck Noll took over. Guys with heart but zero speed/talent. .

  143. For whatever reason our offense continues to keep us in games. I guess our offensive coordinator and staff realize the type of talent they have and utilize that talent to their potential aka coaching them up.

    If we had anything that resembled a decent or average pass defense I still believe we could have had a few more wins.

  215. lots of well deserved criticism of our DBacks. But not enough blame (except DK) towards our slow, unathletic (but really smart, right?) linebackers. Isolate on them and watch how slow they are and therefore never in position – except Wiggins who doesn’t play enough.

  221. ^^^ Honestly — I think Josh Conklin and the entire defensive staff are just being give a total PASS BY Narduzzi for this whole season, I truly do. I think Conklin just went to Narduzzi and said, “My Hands are Totally-Tied Boss, and by legs are tied-up — we just have empty coffers over here.” I really do —- Because they aren’t even trying on that side of the ball except the D-Line is playing their hearts out each week.

Let’s remember how hard it is to come in and play corner in a major conference next time we have a freshman superstar.     Nick, I’ve been having that same feeling….Pitt football is a perennial six win, seven, and on good years eight win program. Even when we could have had an 11 win season we blew it against Cincy. We have the program Pitt brass will tolerate and more importantly – pay for. Sure, there was big talk when Gallagher fired Steve Pederson…but guess what? Heinz Field is going to look a lot like it did that day back in 2014 against Duke – depressing, half empty – when Gallagher decided to do something. But something, so far, hasn’t been nearly enough. Using academics as an excuse for mediocre athletics is bullshit.

    This is why blaming fans at any given time is pointless.

    Imagine if Jock Sutherland hadn’t been told to demphasize and Pitt had been a Michigan (or Penn State-type) winner for decades. Pretty sure there would be no need to complain about fans or sell tickets.

    Pitt could have spent big bucks and gotten an experienced head coach. They are petrified to be top dollar (they being Pitt’s bots).

    In sports, as in most other things, money counts in results. Why is Chryst so successful at Wisconsin? In this case, it’s not so much about money as it is support. He’s got the whole university behind him.

    Pitt half-asses it regularly. I don’t mean the players, the student fans, the alums, or even the coaches. It’s the big bad Pitt brass who only expect mediocrity.

    Yes, next time they talk about winning championships, ask them to show you the money. It isn’t there.

  449. gc, yes he did but I think Whitehead has regressed on defense. This the really the first game we appeared unprepared to play and didn’t battle to the end. Look for some kind of controversy this week. Transfer talk, arguments, off the field stuff, etc. This will be a test of Narduzzi as motivator and not just XXs and OOs.

  559. I still hope Narduzzi is the long term answer at Pitt for “whatever we can be “in football but consider this…..Not everyone is cut out to be a CEO or head coach. There is a reason Narduzzi was an assistant coach for 25 years.

    Running a D 1 Football team requires leadership skills, organizing skills and setting the tone for success. We all know there are shortcomings in talent at Pitt but quite frankly, Narduzzi has made so many coaching mistakes that I am really concerned he does not have what it takes to be a head coach. It happens… I see it in business all the time. Great sales reps get promoted to VP and the whole division falls apart under their indecisive and uncompromising leadership.

    I hope that’s not the case with our apprentice head coach…but the evidence suggests otherwise.

    Artis cannot handle the ball in traffic and he is a human turnover

We can only recruit our way out of this and I too am getting worried about that.I watched PSU beat OSU last week and kept hearing familiar names from recruiting battles aka Sheriff Miller, K. Givens etc they would sure be a help on our defense this year if we had not lost those recruiting battles 2 yrs ago. Anyone notice the empty Miami stadium? looked worse than Hienz on a Thursday night. As for coaches, we simply can not entertain any more coaching changes. We are paying the price for past sins now. The worst part is this is the first game of a Narduzzie team that did not fight to the last second.

  571. Whoever said this team looked like a Wanny team was spot on, that’s exactly what I was thinking as I watched. But somehow Wanny got this program to 10 wins, so the optimist in me says Narduzzi can do it too (of course, Wanny did it in a watered down Big East). Obviously, the failures to go for it on 4th down in the 4th quarter are perplexing … And we have been a pathetic 4th quarter team all year.

    Turnover battle killed us again. Henderson is an amazing talent, but his two fumbles in the last 2 weeks crushed us. Peterson lucky that he didn’t throw a few picks, although he also made some nice throws at times. O-line is struggling, are guys playing hurt? Do we ever rotate the O-line players? Seems like we could use a sub or two to give guys breathers.

    The defense looked to try some new things, and certainly used some new personnel, some of that by necessity. It obviously didn’t work — it looked worse than it has in previous weeks and resulted in 51 points.

    This is a team that just doesn’t have any confidence right now, it needs to catch some breaks and regain it somehow. It’s a shame we don’t play in the Big 10, I seriously believe we would be a top 15 team if we played that level of talent.

  573. The buck for a lesser talented team not winning has to start and stop with the head coach. Navy beat Notre Dame because of better coaching and players with heart. Navy knows that they can’t line up and play smash mouth football against D1 opponents. Their players are in most cases smaller and slower than their opponents. They outsmart and gameplan their opponents. HCPN basically stays in the same defense he ran at MSU and blames the players for not having enough “dog” in the fight, from his press conference last week. It’s his job to take the talent, albeit limited, and put them in a position to win. Not to put them in a scheme that was run at a perennial national championship contending team that was sending players to the pros. Come on Coach, show us you can coach. If there’s a part of your team that’s struggling, devise a scheme for them to be successful. When Peterman is struggling, have him complete some short passes to build his confidence. Rotate some players in on the lines. And scour the country for more talent including JUCOs. Remember, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

  581. PittEE — I didn’t see the navy-ND game, but I do know that navy is a quality program because they run a certain scheme and they run it well. They don’t devise new schemes week to week, or midway through a season. They do the same fundamental things every year in spring practice, fall camp, and throughout the season. And then they do those same things year after year. They do it so much that they get comfortable with it and believe it will work. It’s a mental thing. Football is as much of a mental and emotional game as it is physical. If Narduzzi panics and tries a completely different defense at this point in the year, the players will panic too. If Narduzzi gives up trying to do what he believes in, the players will likely sense it and not know what to believe for themselves. I have seen coaches try to make drastic changes mid season … Sometimes it works, but it seems that more often than not it has disastrous consequences. This is a team that mentally needs to regain their confidence somehow, but I’m not sure that wholesale scheme changes will do that. I’m worried it will have the opposite effect. If Narduzzi believes in his type of defense (and in this team’s offense), which I’m willing to bet he does, then he should stay the course. It’s his job to get them to believe in themselves and hopefully that will change outcomes. No guarantee that it will, especially playing more talented teams, but over the long run ideally it will allow this team to maximize their potential.

    I’ve have never been a total believer in computer rankings, but the Sagarin ratings that said Miami was about the same quality of team as PSU, VT, UNC, and Oklahoma State looked to be spot on.

    Come on coach, find a way to beat Clemson next week in Death Valley!

  588. DK – just when I think you stayed on your meds and are providing good laughs, you pull a big U-Turn on us and use T Mac’s name in the same sentence as Lamar Jackson.

    I watched a lot of football yesterday. The lack of athletic talent on this team gets even worse when you turn our game off and watch other teams’ (not just the top 5 but any team in the top 25) size and speed. This is all about talent. The recruiting to date isn’t even close (including guys on Pitt’s “wish” list who we probably won’t get). Look, Miami is not a good team but look at the size and speed (and youth) of their linebackers! PN and PC seem to love 6’1″ 195 lb. linebackers for some reason.

    One thing that we talked about a little but I think was glaring yesterday was that both our offensive and defensive lines were absolutely man-handled all day. Again, Miami didn’t do that to all the teams they just lost to, but managed to kick us in the teeth with no response. Did it look like the team quit yesterday to you? I don’t know – that’s hard to imagine with this team that I haven’t seen quit. But yesterday was close and raises a lot of questions.

    Throw in some counseling and there may be a chance you can integrate back into society in a few years when, say, Herman Munster is paying his uncle’s search firm to find an elderly retread coach to replace the elderly retread coach he hired previously.

  601. The game was lost because their lines pretty much man-handled ours all day.

    We never got any pressure on Kaaya, who started the game with 13 straight completions.

    Price was ineffective with two big agile studs on him all day (and they never call holding unless they tackle a guy)

    Then Soto takes a helmet to the shin (should have been a penalty) and Jarrett gets rolled up on, on the same play (could spell disaster for the rest of the year) although Taleni made 8 tackles.

    On offense, the line couldn’t open a hole for Conner or Moss all day, or seal off for Henderson. Hall had two nice runs that were wasted, when they inexplicably passed with no success. The line also gave Peterman little time to throw on most occasions.

    Then you add a throw by the punter to Whitehead in double coverage (the trick that didn’t trick anyone),
    a drop of a TD pass by Weah to stop momentum, the fumble by Henderson and the interception by Peterman.

    You end up with a very bad day.

    Of course Pitt fans blame it all on Narduzzi, which is pro-forma around here.

    Miami had their bad day vs VT. They lost by a point to FSU and close games to UNC and ND.

    They weren’t going to lose 5 in a row and our mistakes made it easy for them.

    Barring a miracle next week, we will have to struggle to beat Duke and Syracuse, both teams
    are not pushovers, and Heinz field will be at half capacity at best. Pitt would be well served to allow everyone to fill in the lower bowl, if they want any atmosphere at all.

    As to your Jester Weah prediction of a 1st round pick…..put the lid back on the glue!!

    That said, completely agree with you on Wirginis. Big upgrade from any of our starters yet we continue to troy out these slow and unathletic “good guys” every week who can only make tackles from behind or watch guys fly right by them while they watch.
