POV Game Thread: Georgia Tech

Yesterday I predicted a four point GT win over the Panthers 38-34 because I thought this might be the game our run defense – as great as it has been – shows some weakness against a speedier backfield using the Triple-Option, something that we haven’t seen yet this season.  Here’s a good in-depth explaination by the GT HC Paul Johnson.

That’s how HC Paul Johnson’s offense will look today.  Now, here is a well-seasoned and expert ex-Coast Guard academy Defensive Coordinator John Loose explaining how to defend against it (just a coincidence, really!)

Interesting Huh?  What we need is the defensive approach Dave Wannstedt used to shut down Navy’s great option offense back in the day.  The key there was to keep our MLB Scott McKillop as the ‘spy’ on the Navy Fullback regardless of what was happening on the play.  It worked well and we won some games doing that.  Of course having McKillop at MLB help a bunch there also.

But the more I look at all the factors with the Pitt squad and how we have played it just gnaws at me that I can’t get a handle on how good this team is or isn’t as a whole.  I suppose it is the glass half full dilemma – we have won three games and that’s fine.  But in doing so we have yet to play a complete 60 minute game.

We also, except for last week against an underdog, haven’t shown a balanced offense to the point that I’m comfortable enough to think ‘Well, if our run game falters our passing game will pick up the slack and win the game‘.

But I have a lot of faith in Nate Peterman and feel that Canada misused that part of the offense prior to our win over Marshall.  Granted our running game was going full-bore and all the games had been close ones so he and Narduzzi played it very safe.  That worked out fine versus PSU, but not so well against OK State and North Carolina.

I think we’ll see Canada be more balanced today and that is what makes me want to reconsider the final score of my prediction.  However I’ll keep it as is because that is what I put down in our prediction thread.

Chip in with your thoughts, complaints, wit and kudos as the game rolls on in real-time… game time is at 12:30 and here’s to a Pitt win!

HTP!!

Note:  Here are the Game Notes as compiled by the Pitt Media Department – they are great to have at hand when watching our Panthers do battle.

  1. Maybe I’m getting to old to remember but werent homecoming games at least 3:30pm or evening games?

How in the hell can homecoming be at 12:30pm? 1/2 the kids are still asleep.

  2. I’ll start, game time weather looks good and shouldn’t be much of a factor up here. I was thinking that this game could be the defining one for Narduzzi. I’m betting more than anything else we will see a very strong effort out of the PITT players, win or lose. I’m talking more about the defense on that.

Reed you make a great point about PITT holding down the Marshall QB. This team has become a whipping boy of sorts and I don’t think they deserve all the negativity. Yes they have some coming but it’s their own faults for making the losses close games. Dammed if you do and not dammed if you don’t??..

  6. Short ditty, Majors came back for his very unsuccessful second term and ordered his old uniforms back. They kept sending him these new brighter colors and Majors was very unhappy and lamented that he couldn’t understand how they could get the colors correct. Turns out they never did. This could be as good as it gets. I’ll take it. Probably makes steve’s stomach curdle.

It’s all about perspective. But winning today would be the cherry on top of dodging Mother Nature’s bullet last night in Savannah. So yeah, swat the Yellow Jackets! Hail to Pitt!

Matt Galambos has got to go. He’s just got to go . He contributes nothing and is just a liability at this point. Anthony Mckee, Quintin Wirginnis, and of course Saleem Brightwell need to be Pitt’s 3 linebackers asap.

Rorget the coaches — Jester Weah is going to lose all confidence in his Quarterback with drops like that on Dime Throws. Nathan Peterman just won’t throw it to him anymore once he loses his trust.

🙂 on the bright-side: Aaron Mathews looks freakin’ great. 6’5”, great athleticism and hands, what a 3 star gem for Pitt — and Pat Narduzzi wouldn’t even recruit him as a WR til January, what luck!!

  49. Real disappointed in this first half as usual horrible pass defense and a special teams breakdown have given GT momentum and they get the ball in the 3rd quarter. Pitt should be up 21 to 10. Anyone’s game but with this teams pass defense who knows.

    Like

  50. At this point we have to just comprehend that Terrish Webb, Ryan Lewis mostly, but even Avonte Maddox are all just un-talented players who should only be special teams contributors, and absolutely should not be starters at this level.

Young guys gotta play — this defensive play with the poor defensive backs —- and the totally ineffective, slow, and zero-instinct linebackers — is just becoming horrific and unacceptable.

The Linebackers 😦 😦 —– There’s just nothing to say here that hasn’t been beat to-death. They literally did not block Matt Galambos — the freakin’ Middle Linebacker in a 4-3 defense — on any play going outside because they knew it wasn’t even necessary.

Seriously — just put Jordan Whitehead up at linebacker and run basically a 3-4 defense (where Jordan Whitehead is still “technically” a safety). And if Matt Galambos really is the 245 he’s listed at, what is he doing??? He needs to be 230 max because he needs to be so much faster.

Whatever — Defensive Backfield and the the Linebackers are gonna be the same every week for this season, as the defensive staff have made clear they are going to do nothing about personnel and just keep playing the same guys, in the exact same spots, every week no matter how poorly they play overall 😦 .

Two city schools — Pittsburgh, PA vs. Miami, FL — and two Programs on the way to becoming Major again. Lamont Wade and his Peeps know they want to be in the middle of that!!! (wink, wink) 🙂

Now — if Lamont Wade will stay and fulfill his destiny at Pitt, and if Pitt can get one more Cornerback, one more Linebacker, and 2 defensive ends and 2 defensive tackles: then this 2017 recruiting class will be a very solid addition to the Pat Narduzzi effort here at Pitt. Now, hopefully each player successfully makes it through the physical-evaluation process this time.

Funny he didn’t try putting a Cornstalk or something in place of the ‘N’ on Nebraska’s iconic helmet.

Shakir Soto had a great game today. Tyrique Jarrett was particularly huge (literally and figureatively) on the last GT drive. Bam Bradley also with some nice play today.

I could not believe that Johnson went for the 4th and 1 on his own 35 in a tie game. That may be his job.

  118. ^To clarify^ Meant even after 20 years of non-use, being on the back shelf of the closet, the old colors (or close to it and the Script) have staying power. Even in the 18 states, where Pitt wasn’t #1, it was 2nd in like 15 of those states.

Pitt throwback uni’s even won in some deep South states like Mississippi and South Carolina. And in SC won handily over NC State and Miami.

Wow — I had to come here because this is totally relevant, and I’m always lookin’ to hype-up the fellow Pitt diehards who may be on here: Michigan State is getting banged-on at home, late in the 4th quarter, by 2-3 Brigham Young lol. Haha @Upittbaseball Scott Barnes is from Washington State and went to Fresno state — BYU are the REAL Mormons.

🙂 🙂 There is very little doubt now who the real “Architect” of the all that success at Michigan State was. Mark Dantonio was always being propped-up by the Energetic, Lil-Bit Crazy (like a Fox), Take-No-Prisoners Pat Narduzzi as his Defensive Coordinator and co-head coach all the way through the building of Michigan State — back to their Cincinnati days.

Make no mistake, Pat Narduzzi is gonna build something great in Oakland, PA . P.s. now it’s up to the “Eagles” — the Pitt Football ‘Leadership Council’ to decide if they want to wear these uniforms. They can choose to wear them every home game now if they want, but they’ll probably want to keep mixing it-up.

Pat Narduzzi’s gonna build it, and People will come!!

  125. Doc – I think Blewitt has been an average college
Kicker. He has won some games for sure but he is at best an average college kicker. He is 70% career wise and this year 7-10. His problem is he can hit a 54 yarder and then miss 2-3 in a row that are 30 yarders.

I look forward to a new kicker next year who is consistent.

My only beef with Narduzzi is that he is playing a defensive scheme without the correct personnel. But…

My hat is off to him for holding this team together, they have played hard and never quit.

That 4th down defensive stop was amazing. That was a play that put them in a position to win.

  153. I was there. After Tech took the lead I took off my older block PITT cap and put on my new script Pitt cap just bought during the third quarter by my brother-in-law. I kept the price tag on like the boys in the hood. I hoped for a change of luck. All of a sudden we moved the ball and that tipped pass went to Orndorff (sic) and a spectacular TD. Hat still on, I saw that great fourth down stop and Pitt’s ability to move the ball closer to the goal line and Peterman’s move to put the ball in the center of the field for the kick. I closed my eyes and lowered my head, unable to watch the kick. Crowd roared and I raised my head to see Blewitt in a heap of white shirted Tech players. I did not know the ball hit an upright and fell through, with both officials under the goal posts looking at each other first before signalling good. Learned of the near miss only on the long walk to the parking lot. If only Pitt could play pass defense. Whatever.
